Why'd they kill Meryl off in Mama Mia 2?

It was a mercy killing - mercy on the audience, that is.

She's ugly and an assault against aesthetics.

I've wondered this too. The original was a huge hit and probably Meryl's biggest moneymaker.

However, I thought the sequel was a much better movie than the original.

They had been planning the sequel almost since the first one made so much money. I think, back then, Streep intended to be in it. I don’t know what changed, other than she came to her senses.

She probably held a gun to their heads for a Streep payday but only got her long enough to kill her off.

She was 15 years too old to play the part 10 years ago. And those hips.

I don't know but Brosnan's singing in the first one was cringe worthy. I actually felt embarrassed for him. He sounded like Stewie Griffin singing.

The singing in the sequel was much better. Lily James, Cher. People who can sing.

Meryl is mostly always a terrible actress who imagines she can sing. They let her do it movie after movie for a while. She never got better. She can't sing. She was decades too OLD to play the teenage mother of a 20 year old in Mamma Mia. Streep was almost fucking 60 when the first movie came out! It made a penny but those overalls and hips and non singers, it was truly terrible. 2008 is the year that Streep became officially gross. Don't bother putting down the source material. Meryl was shameless and atrociously bad. As she continues to be.

I never saw either movie because I didn't care and I'm not a Frau - but still - who the fuck kills off a main character from a feel-good movie when it comes time for the feel-good sequel?

I love ABBA but I hate Mamma Mia (stage and screen)

I just knew I was going to love the movie with that cast (Streep, Baranski, Walters) but it was not a good experience. Then I heard the original cast album and realized I only want to hear Agnetha, Frida, and Bjorn sing those songs.

Mamma Mia is not for fraus. What ridiculousness. But Meryl and the rat face one from the Good Wife and Julie fucking fat Andrews are not singers, are they then R13? Colin Firth played a gay man with conviction. Still a gay man in a corset who shouldn't sing. Perce Brosnan died from botox poisoning and they filmed it! Meryl loved them all because at 60, with hips that touched both sides of the screen she was just a free loving old hippie. In your end R13, only the island resembled the beloved play where millions of millennials discovered their love of ABBA.

Pretending to jump and sing almost cost Streep her life. So they hired Cher as her mother for the sequel. Meryl had some subtle facework between MM1 and MM2 - Nature's Revenge. Please don't disparage art that you've never seen. Have you no mother or buppie? These films are not for fraus. Meryl was not killed off as much as she was already dead. The scenery was out of this world. Take a chance on me!

The writer killed her off because while she was willing to return with some prodding she didn't want to have to do much.

She doesn't do sequels so they worked out a way to have her there while not having here "there."

Yet we still had to suffer her singing in Mary Poppins

Meryl's version of Feed The Turds is right up there with her Blue Rodeo hit singing song!

She's really not terrible, she's just not a singer. She's an actress who can sing, and does okay.

No, she's fucking terrible. She can't sing. I am a singer who can act and I don't know anyone who thinks Meryl can sing. Shirley Maclaine is a better singer AND actress than Streep. And she can't sing. But she gets the feeling across. Streep just assaults people with terrible singing.
