Diane Keaton did Annie Hall & Goodbar in one year....
[bold]They were so different and she was so good in them that she won the Oscar and it gave her a sort of pass and credibility for life.[/bold]
Apart from Shoot The Moon what else has she done since Annie Hall/Goodbar that shows her as a good actress? She hasn't even been funny in anything, even though she's considered a great comedienne. Woody was lucky he found Mia, who was very talented. Keaton couldn't have done what Mia did with all those roles.

Woody and Diane made a number of great movies together, it wasn't just Annie Hall. And that was back when Woody's movies were still mainstream, and he hadn't retreated to art house hits only yet. Diane became more mediocre about her work with Woody, but I don't think she's untalented.

She's done just a huge amount of awful films in the past forty years. Some people criticize Streep's filmography of the same era, but she usually as interesting roles and showcases in her films; Keaton's are just stupid pot-boilers. A world away from her early career. She's spent far too long coasting on fumes to the point that they've actually had a negative impact on her standing. How many times has she turned up to play the same psuedo-quirky gender studies professor?
She could've had a career more like Streep, but things like THE FAMILY STONE, FWC, FATHER OF THE BRIDE, and all the other comedies were easier paychecks.

I think that Keaton is a good director. Sometime in the 90s she had her own production company and was trying to get her own projects off the ground, but I don't know what happened. It's possible that once she adopted her kids, she decided to be a real parent and not an absent one, and took acting jobs for money and spent the rest of her time restoring and flipping homes.

Marvin's Room - Imagine a movie where Diane Keaton and Leonardo Dicaprio are the stars and Meryl Streep and Robert Deniro fill in the smaller roles. Only Leo and Diane can pull that off.
Baby Boom - Her greatest film. The movie is her. She's in every scene. She'll go several scenes without conversation with another person. It's all her and absolute perfection.
The Family Stone - a Six Feet Under Christmas Special - wonderful
Something's Gotta Give - Katharine Hepburn allusions everywhere. Turtlenecks, beach house, Jack Nicholson co-starring as Spencer Tracy.
Best line in Baby Boom. She's interviewing potential nannies.
Diane: So tell me a little bit about yourself. What brought you to New York?
Potential Nanny: The Lord.
Diane: Well, thank you very much for coming by...

Streep had her reasons for doing She-Devil and Death Becomes Her. They were actually both fun enough (despite Goldie Hawn), and she was good in them. But it wasn't a permanent thing. She went back to trying to challenge herself more.
But Keaton's phase of doing the same type of film has lasted a lot longer than Streep's. There's a lot more garbage on her resume, particularly as time goes on, than on Streep's.

Great find. R86, thanks for sharing! Keaton actually mentions that episode in her book, pointing out how kind and helpful Mike Connors was to her during the filming of the episode.
After college, I worked in the Programming Department of a syndicated TV station, and part of my duties was to time out the episodes of the shows we ran. Great gig for a lifetime movie buff, as I got to see everyone’s guest appearances on episodic TV.
Two episodes I still remember (and I fully realize I’m setting myself up for a “Mary!” here!) were Keaton’s appearances on “Love American Style” and “Night Gallery”. She was a delight on “LAS” — so fresh and charming (of course, it helped that her episode was a sweet and non-smarmy one.) And her insecure nurse unwittingly duped into murder on “Night Gallery” was good, too — very unlike most of the acting on episodic TV of the period.

Does anybody know what song(s) used in Looking for Mr. Goodbar are holding up the release of this film on Blu Ray due to rights issues? I understand that has been the reason for its status as 'missing in action' so to speak on Dvd/Blu Ray.

I don't think we'll ever see it now. It's a forgotten movie in many ways.
It's on YouTube these days. It gets pulled and then re-posted.
