Movies with no likeable characters

I just watched Elle with Isabelle Huppert last night - great film, but every single character in it was either a pervert, a loser or a sucker.

Can you think of any other films with no likeable or sympathetic characters?

Oh my God, I hate all those characters so much...

(Also agree with “The Family Stone” and almost every character in an Alexander Payne movie—well, Payne at least seems to hate all his characters, and it shows)

I really like Cronenberg movies for the most part, but after thinking about it, you're right!

His characters are compelling, but off putting to various degrees at the same time.

[italic]Mesrine[/italic]I gave it a try because the trailer made it look exciting and Vincent Cassel is never boring. Loathsome characters

'Something for Everyone' with Angela Lansbury. That's even mentioned in the description of the film on Rotten Tomatoes:

[quote] Based on a novel by Harry Kressing, Something for Everyone must hold some sort of record for having the largest number of unsympathetic characters within a single film.

Another similar film that was released the same year was 'Entertaining Mr Sloane' and that one was full of despicable characters as well.

R31 I liked Cronenberg's earlier stuff, but if his most recent film Maps to the Stars (which was released 5 years ago) is any indication, he's sadly become a parody of himself, like that hack Tim Burton. Every character in that movie was purposely written to be over-the-top grotesque and detestable just for its own sake.

by Anonymousreply 59March 22, 2019 11:30 PM

I saw Elle a few months ago. It was definitely not a film that would have been released in the United States. Americans actors would be shredded on social media for taking part and the lead actress would be questioned and criticized about the film in every subsequent interview. I really didn't care for the film personally, but I still prefer the European approach of being less hesitant to take on queasy subjects. The "cancelled " culture is just exhausting.

Elle is very intelliget black comedy that's not fit for pussies or the easily offended. I found it exhilarating.

I also adored Nymphomaniac by Lars Von Trier, this decade's masterpiece and such a joy to watch. I would argue that Dancer in the Dark has two very relatable, lovable characters in Bjork's and Deneuve's.

I hate Kubrick however, his approach to storytelling is exhausting and the academy earned my admiration by not wasting any awards on that hateful jew.
