Call me a silly rube but I find the phenomenon a bit fascinating. According to ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine the whites showing below the eyes portended misfortune while the whites visible above the eyes indicated rage and psychosis. Famous people with this trait include Sal Mineo, John F. Kennedy , Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Sharon Tate, Princess Diana, Charles Manson, Michael Jackson, and Robert Pattinson.

It just looks crazy if you can see whites Iver and under the irises.

R7 Diana Ross is another good example . I wonder if her daughter Tracee inherited them.

R10 Kennedy had them below the irises which is supposedly means they are prone to victimhood or accidents. Above the irises, like Manson is a sign of madness. Many would dismiss sanpaku as superstition but I still find this interesting.

The dark knight shooter, James Holmes also has this trait. Perhaps it really does correlate to something neurological.

Adam Lanza has the white showing above the iris which portends mental illness. In many pictures Princess Diana shows the white underneath the iris.

Is "Crazy Eyes" the colloquialism for this?

R13 Very intriguing

R14 The whites showing above the eyes are crazy eyes. If they are visible below then they are unlucky eyes. Or so the Japanese say.

I am wondering if anyone has eyes like that in my family.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 21, 2019 4:16 AM |
There is a book on this, I think the title is "You Are All Sanpaku". Someone I knew who was practiced macrobiotics was into all of this. I notice it is true. The people I have encountered in life with sanpaku eyes always had tragic lives and such. Always. IIRC, I think the book helped to popularize macrobiotics. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 21, 2019 4:36 AM |
The worst case of white below the eyes that I have seen.

I believe there could be something to it. Diane Downs is another sanpaku eyed loon.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 21, 2019 6:38 AM |
Yeah, you have to see the person head on, looking straight ahead, you can't tell if they're looking off to the side, or up.

R18 That really is disturbing
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 23, 2019 10:33 AM |
When I was 10 or 11 I made the great voyage from the children's section of the library into the adult section, and one of the first books I borrowed was "You Are All Sanpaku." At the time it was not convincing nor did it seem to try to be, it was disturbing and I knew enough not to dwell on it or worry.
Now I wonder if it is primarily about Japanese people whose eyes are different than western eyes, and being more almond shaped are less likely to be sanpaku in a normal state. (My ex-husband is Japanese.) Some of the photos linked above like Princess Diana and Karla Holmoka are shot from an angle where the head is tilting down but the eyes are raised, so if you try that yourselves in the mirror you will also be sanpaku.
Now, Elizabeth Holmes, there is an example!
