It is a perfect example of Susan Sontag's concept of naive camp--it's not trying to be cheesy--it thinks it is great Gothic drama in the tradition Stoker and Anne Rice (though maybe all vampire/witch stories have some damp element).

This and the spin-off The Lair were hilariously bad. It's a shame that the owners of Regent Entertainment turned out to be scam artists who embezzled money and took loans for projects they never filmed. I believe guys like Charlie David and Reichen Lehmkuhl lost money as well since they invested their own money with these guys expecting to not only get a profit but an acting gig out of it as well.

Charlie David was such an extraordinarily bad actor we used to watch the show to see just how bad.... he's like an entire course in What Not to Do for any young actor hoping to make it. He tried writing some scripts too, and they read just like he acts.

That said, there were some really cute guys on that show. So yeah, we watched for that, too.

Charlie did produce, and was at least serviceable in, Judas Kiss, starring DL Icon Brent Corrigan, trying to go legit.

I mean, Brent Corrigan, even clothed, did a better job, but hey, take the win where you can.

What I did like about Dante's Cove and The Lair were that they were gay themed horror mystery shows taking place in rather small, remote locations with a lot of gays. The Lair had porn star Colton Ford as local sheriff.

Colton Ford hilariously tried to become a singer--there was a documentary about it that would show up on Here from time to time. It was one step from a Christopher Guest parody and Ford was auto tuned to the tits.

Yikes, If they thought that hiring Colton Ford for anything was a good idea this show was Doomed from the start.

A week later at the same club (the drag queen invited me back again) and he's there again. He's sitting on the couch, better this time but still not really having fun. I flirt with him again but get nowhere. Then this gorgeous boy walks past the table and I invite him to join us. I flirt with him and he's receptive, find out he's Macedonian-American (never met one of those, lol). We make out and he says he needs to go back to his friends but we'll chat later in the night.

Anyway -- the actor was apparently taking note of all this because as soon as the boy leaves and I turn around he shoots up from the couch, grabs me and starts making out with me. I'm in fucking ecstasy. It only lasts for a few seconds but feels like forever. I tell him I thought he was straight and he says he's bisexual. Unfortunately, despite my efforts to take him home, he leaves shortly after that. Fortunately, I took the other cute boy home.

I never saw him again after that. Below is a photo of how he looked back then; he's aged since. He also directed a short film co-starring one of the Dante's Cove people, Jon Fleming (called "Grinder"). It's the only time I've ever had any intimate contact with someone who's been on TV/film. The tragedy of this series was that no one was rimming young Stephen Amell's ass for an entire episode.

Dante's Cove and The Lair are the ultimate guilty pleasures. I mean, I wouldn't want my friends and family to know that I am even aware of these shows.

A shame that there'll never be a gay version of HBO with quality LGBTQ content and some guilty pleasures like Dante's Cove and The Lair. The support from the community and allies just isn't there.

That Brandon Ruckdashel guy has done a shit ton of soft-core porn for cable TV with many performers from the hard-core straight industry.

Brad Benton / Dylan Vox has had a small but prolific career doing direct-to-video, low budget schlock and now several shows for the SyFy network. It goes to show you how far persistence and the ability to deliver lines believably can get you.

But there must have been a different casting agent, director or budget for THE LAIR because all of those guys were FUG or aging out.
