I was given tickets to see this movie next week. There will be a Q&A afterward with Mary Kay Place herself. Apparently this is a big deal for her and there is talk of Oscar nods for next year.
I hate trailers that give the entire movie away but this trailer doesn't really tell you much of anything.
But I LOVE Mary Kay Place and I'll be looking forward to seeing it.

Here's an earlier thread for this movie, OP, if you wish to read more discussion about it.

R3 That thread is a discussion of Oscar nominees.

I loved Mary Kay Place in Girl Interrupted in that scene where she gets in a confrontation with Angelina Jolie at the diner.

She never got the exposure she should have (or we should have)
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 17, 2019 12:12 AM |
In addition to Mary Kay you’ve got Andrea Martin and Estelle Parsons.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 17, 2019 1:25 AM |
and Joyce Van Patten.

I don't know what the Q&A audience will be like. It will be either mostly gay men or it will be seniors. I'm not sure if Mary Kay Place has a big gay following, but I'm sure many of the gays enjoyed her as Loretta Haggars on Mary Hartman and she is a bit of a DL favorite.

Is this about Aunt Diane?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 17, 2019 3:07 AM |
Say goodbye to your Oscar next year too, G
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 17, 2019 3:42 AM |
Yeah, is it?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 17, 2019 4:19 AM |
Anyone have suggestions on questions to ask during the Q&A?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 17, 2019 3:09 PM |
I hope fat old Mary Kay finally gets her Oscar.

I remember an interview with Place fairly well into her run on MH, MH. She already had a production company and they were planning to do a pilot for a sitcom about Prissy from GWTW!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 17, 2019 3:28 PM |
I don't like her, she gives off an uptight WASP bitch vibe.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 17, 2019 3:45 PM |
Critics are calling "Diana" a "powerhouse" (whatever that means)
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 17, 2019 11:24 PM |
Why are they opening this now ? Her performance will be forgotten by the end of the year. Should wait for October.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 26, 2019 1:08 PM |
What is this movie about?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 26, 2019 1:23 PM |
Bitch

R18 - But what about “Diane”?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 29, 2019 6:54 PM |
A woman devastated by the break-up with long time lover Kevin Spacey. Based on true events.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 29, 2019 6:57 PM |
But R19, October would be too late, look at what happened to Julia Roberts’ Ben Is Back last year - late release, no traction. Glenn started building buzz for The Wife an entire year before its theatrical release last summer. Also, this film will have to do everything possible just to find an audience, let alone be in the awards season mix. Seems more likely to end up like Where Is Kyra.

My mother died recently and this feels like it’s going to hit too close to home. All the sad and disappointed aging people wondering who’s next.
But it looks good.

MKP's "work" is distracting since it's supposed be to be realist lower middle-class "kitchen sink" drama. IRL, Diane wouldn't have had botox, fillers, and surgery.

[quote] IRL, Diane wouldn't have had botox, fillers, and surgery.
She has none of those in this movie.

An underrated actress that deserves some recognition...would love to see have her "moment"..
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 31, 2019 5:28 AM |
I saw this last night at the Nuart in LA. There was a great Q&A afterward with Mary Kay Place. All the performances were great and it was great to see actresses like Andrea Martin and Glynnis O'Connor (who I hadn't seen in anything since her 70s films with Robby Benson). I don't know if the film will get a wider release but Id recommend seeing it if you can.

Really liked her in The Big Chill as the motherly figure who really wanted a child and in Latter Days as the Mormon mother who disowned her gay child, for a while.

I saw this movie - rented from Amazon - last night
It's such a powerful, quiet film - I can't stop thinking about it.
MKP deserves an Oscar for this.
And Jake Lacy is surprisingly good as her son.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 31, 2019 4:55 PM |
She was great in Big Love; I would've watched a spin off of Place, Harry Dean Stanton & Albie (Matt Ross) running the polygamist compound & dealing with the outside world.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 31, 2019 5:01 PM |
You should watch this gem of a movie for MKP alone
But sexy Jake Lacy is a bonus
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 31, 2019 5:08 PM |
I always liked MKP but she is truly Oscar worthy in this. Even the old age makeup or whatever they used at the end was well done. Every moment was great in this movie. The dinner scene when her son and wife try to convert her is standout.. So much better than The Wife...
The above poster who said Mary Kay had bad botox you have been warned. More false claims you will be asked to turn in your gay card...
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 31, 2019 5:23 PM |
G is boiling a rabbit in MKP's kitchen now and sitting in the dark, sobbing...

Or, like Datalounge, it will be both.

I wonder why they picked her to star? Many people recognize her from different projects over the last 40 years, but would be hard-pressed to come up with her name. Not exactly a box office draw.

I'd love to see Mary Kay and Louise Lasser work together again.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 13, 2019 4:48 AM |
Do the queens at awards watch have her anywhere on their radar?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 13, 2019 4:53 AM |
A reviewer noted that "Diane" is the first movie in which Mary Kay Place has every had top billing, she's always been a supporting player. The reviewer said it is an Oscar worthy performance. I'm going to watch it on demand.

She was robbed of an Oscar nomination for this. And really, if you put this performance up against Zellweger's, there is no contest. It's Mary! all the way.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 22, 2020 1:13 AM |
I was hoping this movie was about the infamous Aunt Diane.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 22, 2020 1:18 AM |
She weirdly looked like Zellweger in that bar scene.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 22, 2020 1:22 AM |
No Oscar, but she won both the L.A. Film Critics Association and National Society of Film Critics awards.
