SALEM: I Invoke This First Ever Thread
I have searched our dear datalounge for a thread on this 2014-2017 series ... yet witches (???) keep me from uncovering any.
HOW CAN THIS BE?
I just started watching Season 1 on Amazon Prime, and it's more imaginative than many shows ... or is it but some witch spell that maketh me [italic]believe[/italic] so?

TIME: The last time I saw you on television was Parks and Recreation. Is it nice to be back in the fantasy realm?
Lucy Lawless: It is! The form of this shooting was how I was raised in the business. I actually started out in comedy, but where I really grew up was in one-hour dramas. It is a bit of a home-coming, actually.
TIME: Salem is about witches, obviously, but the character you play is no ordinary witch.
Lucy Lawless: I come from a very old line of witches that have had many incarnations and have made names. These are famous witches in history called Hecate. Contemporary accounts have given us quite a lot of stories about these witches. Whether they were rumor or not, we’ve got lots of great information about how they’ve lived and what made them so terrifying. I cherry-pick some of those awful awful stories and feed them into my character. The horrifying things that she does — like her beauty regime, for example — are stolen from historical accounts of witches in history.
TIME: Are you a history buff? Do you find yourself in late-night Wikipedia spirals?
Lucy Lawless: The show presents me with all the challenge I can handle. There are times when I collapse my hand to my forehead and think, “How can these guys write this horrible stuff?” Just when you’re about to accuse [Salem creators] Adam Simon and Brannon Braga of being really sick, they’ll show you, “Here’s anecdotal evidence of people at the time!” These are real historical characters, which is the most horrifying thing. What you think is twisted fantasy, turns out somebody’s done it!

Ew, I hated all the lesbianism in it. I quit with the beginning of the second season.
Shane West was hot but too many lesbian scenes.

From Seasons 1 and 2, the only men I'd want to bed were Stephen Lang ....

I watched (anti) religiously for its entire run. Dark dark stuff especially for broadcast tv.

The things with the toads and rats residing in people as "familiars" really was rather shocking, and revolting.

There were Salem threads at the time, I might have started one or two of them. Wait until you get to the season with Lucy Lawless (Xena Warrior Princess.) I didn't watch Xena so I never cared about about Lucy, so it took my by surprise in Spartacus how beautiful and talented she is. Great show to get your rocks off too as well, let's be honest. And she ruled again in Salem, I'm guessing as a powerful witch, can't remember for sure. Would love to see both performances again. And some other stuff I know I'm forgetting.

What I do not understand is why "salem" does not turn up any threads about the show in either an onsite search, here, or on google.

I didn't know Tamzin Merchant, who played Anne on SALEM, was the original Daenerys on GAME OF THRONES. It seems they junket that whole pilot and recast.
I don't imagine her being great in that part, though I thought she was darling, and sad, on THE TUDORS.

But didn't you have to put in the actor's name to get a hit? When I searched "salem datalounge" it wasn't [italic]easy breezy[/italic] or easy peasy, or anything else.

Fine.
This one was the first hit on Google searching "datalounge salem"

I watched when the first season was originally airing but then stopped halfway through for some reason, can't even remember why as I was quite enjoying it. Too much other stuff on TV at the time, I think. Had no idea Lucy Lawless was in it! So this is what she had been doing before her stint on Ash vs Evil Dead.
You sound fun, OP. What else do you watch these days?

Thanx! I don't really follow anything current ... my schedule's all over the place and I can never remember when anything's on. Plus, I sadly have a somewhat limited attention span, and so mostly binge shows I've found while picking over the dead on amazon prime or netflix, or wherever.
Most recently, I really liked OZARK. I liked THE AMERICANS...things that are a little tense.
I like a lot of Brittish crime series, like HAPPY VALLEY. But I was strangely disappointed in THE ALIENIST : ( Though it was nice to see loopy Sean Young resurface out of left field.

Is there any gay sex in it? Or just hot shirtless men?

r19 Yeah, the sentiment around The Alienist was much the same here on DL. That shot of Sean Young is amazing, though. Bless her.
Can't wait until Ozark comes back later this year. If you enjoy tense things, you should definitely check out The Terror if you have AMC. We went bonkers over it on DL when it premiered last year.

I will snoop out THE TERROR.
Thank you! I also loved the cult season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Aside from the opening credits, its witchy season did nothing for me, though.
This vid was apparently put together by a right wing nut job, but shows some good scenes:
