Wig recommendation or toupee for bald spots

Im 28 and balding spots are already here. The inevitable will happen soon, SO at that point, what kind of wig should i get? As i am frugal, please consider cost into your suggestion.

by Anonymousreply 98July 21, 2020 2:45 PM

Don't. Embrace it.

by Anonymousreply 1March 4, 2019 9:21 PM

Agreed. Embrace it

by Anonymousreply 2March 4, 2019 9:22 PM

Do you like the wind-blown look, OP?

by Anonymousreply 3March 4, 2019 9:23 PM

Wigs or 'hair systems' as they're now called never look convincing. Shave your head instead.

by Anonymousreply 4March 4, 2019 9:24 PM

Yea embrace it. Wearing a wig says so much about a guy...none good.

by Anonymousreply 5March 4, 2019 9:26 PM

People can say embrace it but I started losing my hair at 24. I started shaving my head and every day since people have put me at least 10 years older than I am. It sucks.

by Anonymousreply 6March 4, 2019 9:43 PM

Get a Zsa Zsa Gabor wig. Definitely...

by Anonymousreply 7March 4, 2019 9:45 PM

Wig? Wrote a song about it wanna hear it here it go....

by Anonymousreply 8March 4, 2019 9:52 PM

Don't do it. I started to go bald in my 20's and I went the comb-over route. Big mistake. No matter how good the toupee (or the comb-over), people will know. Just cut your hair short and get over it. If anyone judges you on the amount of hair you have on your head, you're better off without them.

by Anonymousreply 9March 4, 2019 10:06 PM

I’m more attracted to balding guys... not sure why

by Anonymousreply 10March 4, 2019 10:10 PM

R10 me too!

by Anonymousreply 11March 4, 2019 10:11 PM

Baseball cap.

by Anonymousreply 12March 4, 2019 10:11 PM

Why are you asking me? How would I know?

by Anonymousreply 13March 4, 2019 10:33 PM

Colin Firth was quoted as saying that nearly ALL actors wore some type of hairpiece for public occasions. If you feel more attractive wearing a small piece, why not go for it? But I’d invest in a good one, something cheap will look obvious.

by Anonymousreply 14March 4, 2019 10:40 PM

Contrary to the delusions of wig wearers, a hair piece is ALWAYS obvious, no matter how much you spend on it. The vanity and obvious self-delusion of wig wearers is way more of a turn off than baldness. Better to look ten years older than your age than to be The Guy With The Wig. Seriously. The only time a wig is acceptable is for women or little girls with cancer or alopecia. That's it. A man in a wig is always pathetic. A man with a combover is beyond help.

by Anonymousreply 15March 4, 2019 11:11 PM

It's not a wig but you could make one of these your thing. Walmart sells them.

Wife went thru breast cancer and chemo. Inevitably lost her hair - she got an expensive wig but hated it - I told her to wear it (her baldness) proud and she did - including going to a wedding. We are who we are and I agree upthread - pieces (and wigs) are obvious - better to be who you are.

Most of the posters on this thread evidently have no person knowledge of the subject, and are simply mouthing tired old cliches. Current men's hairpieces are a million miles from the toupees of yesteryear. The materials available, the manufacturing techniques, and the attachment methods have transformed the product - there has been far more progress in prosthetic hair than in transplants. If you choose a decent supplier, don't go overboard with the hair density, and get a good haircut, they are 99% undetectable. I have been wearing one for 5 years now and I have never been busted. Tons of young fashion-conscious guys are wearing them now. Have a look at some of the photos on these suppliers' sites. If you need any help getting started, feel free to shout.

by Anonymousreply 22March 5, 2019 7:38 AM

r22 sorry, chicken, we're well aware of today's wigs. And they still look like wigs. And they're still obvious. And you're wasting your fucking money flying to Toronto every 3 weeks to have it "trimmed in". Everyone in your life knows you're wearing a piece. You are fooling no one but yourself.

by Anonymousreply 23March 5, 2019 8:16 AM

Love hair you can spray on!

by Anonymousreply 24March 5, 2019 8:25 AM

Do hair transplants work? I've heard you still have to take a certain drug to prevent more hair loss which can have some severe side effects.

by Anonymousreply 25March 5, 2019 9:04 AM

r25, depends on a lot of factors. With that one, as long as you're in LA, you generally get what you're able to pay for. Your specific baldness pattern and how far along it has progressed at the time of surgery and your general health and the health of the donor hair all play significant variants. Go to a hair loss board. There's lots of information on them and even if you're not balding they're kind of fascinating. The biggest thing I took away from obsessively reading threads at a couple of them for a while was that most of these guys blame every bad thing in their lives and all their shitty behavior on the injustice of their hair loss. And the ones who have successful transplants are often confronted by the cold reality of their immaturity when hair can't be scapegoated.

Become a devout Jew.

by Anonymousreply 27March 5, 2019 9:37 AM

r6 I started losing my hair when I was 17 I started shaving my head at 22. For a few years I did look older than my age.

The upside to continuing to shave my head at age 55 is you can't see my gray hair. Which makes me look a little younger than my age.

by Anonymousreply 28March 5, 2019 9:53 AM

Ok yalll, who told me to embrace it, really needs to read up on the DL thread about how some queens found a guy attractive, but then they see the bald spots.

by Anonymousreply 29March 5, 2019 12:14 PM

Get on Propecia ASAP and you'll keep what you have and possibly gain some back.

by Anonymousreply 30March 5, 2019 1:16 PM

And maybe grow some breasts!.....

by Anonymousreply 31March 5, 2019 1:23 PM

I can’t understand people who just accept it. I’ve been taking Propecia for a decade and have a full head of hair. I can’t imagine not doing that. Not having all your hair drastically alters your appearance.

by Anonymousreply 32March 5, 2019 1:31 PM

Not everyone has the head shape or facial features to carry off a shaved head. Look at Prince William, for example.

by Anonymousreply 33March 5, 2019 1:37 PM

Only poofs wear rugs OP. Remember that. And besides, if you get one everyone will snicker behind your back. The only thing worse than wearing a rug is doing the dreaded comb over. Men who do that should be buggy whipped in a public space and have whatever hair they have left shaved off. And then slapped repeatedly about the head and shoulders, and made to roll in dog poop.

by Anonymousreply 34March 5, 2019 1:39 PM

Actually, I saw a Youtube of a couple of guys called Men Try - they tried on wigs, one of them was bald and the woman near the end of the video put on a piece on the guy that sort of stuck to his scalp. It looked really good, like you could not tell he was wearing a wig.

Finasteride 5mg. Has done wonders for me.

by Anonymousreply 37July 18, 2020 3:53 PM

Frugal and hair pieces are mutually exclusive OP. A convincing hairpiece costs several thousand dollars, and requires visits to a hair tech every couple of months to wash and tighten. Don't go cheap, or you're just going to be an embarrassment to you and your friends. Get a good one, or learn to be happy with what nature has given you.

by Anonymousreply 38July 18, 2020 3:54 PM

R35: "It looked really good, like you could not tell he was wearing a wig."

No it doesn't and yes you can. Embrace reality.

by Anonymousreply 39July 18, 2020 3:57 PM

Hair pieces should be treated like hats. I’ve met so many women who do it this way and it’s about time we admit we’re just keeping the scenery pretty.

Do we want baldies in the background of our instagram? No, we don’t. Look at the good you do!

I started losing my hair early in life, and by my mid-to-late 20's it became really noticeable.

I decided to go the hair transplant route, and it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Maybe the biggest.

The transplants never really took. I also had something like 7 scalp reductions (a procedure I don't think is even done anymore, that was supposed to reduce the balding area), and that did nothing to help either, and actually left me with a huge scar down the middle of my scalp.

I wound up just wearing baseball caps, bandanas, and other assorted coverings for years, before finally deciding I'd had enough of that, and went with a top-of-the-line, custom-made, lace front hairpiece.

I maintain that a good portion of the people I come across don't know I wear a piece, but I'm sure there are some that do. When I've got it properly placed and styled, it looks fine. I wear it long, so that "hairpiece look" in the back isn't really an issue. But when the attachment starts to loosen a little, or when the color starts to fade and not match the color of my real hair as closely, or when it loses too much hair in certain areas and needs to be repaired, it can look sketchy. At this point in my life, I'm wearing it for me more than for other people, as I don't think I could bear to see the remnants of those awful doll-hair transplants and the big scalp-reduction scar every day in the mirror.

Between the astronomical amount of money I've spent on all this over the years, the limitations it's placed on my life in terms of activities forget skydiving, forget rollercoasters, forget camping or any kind of travel that involves "roughing it", forget surfing, forget riding in a convertible, forget getting into any type of physical altercation, shall I continue? there's tons more) , the time I've spent taking off the hairpieces, cleaning them, shaving my head, cleaning off all the disgusting glue and tape residue from my forehead and scalp, and affixing them back onto my head, and the general stress that comes with wearing a hairpiece...it's been a real drag all around.

I can emphatically state, from experience, that the absolute best thing you can do is just shave your head and go with it. I really regret not doing that myself.

by Anonymousreply 43July 18, 2020 4:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 46July 18, 2020 6:12 PM

Miss OP: Many sisters get wighats glued to their heads, but we recommend attaching your wighat with double-sided tape.

That way it is easy to remove when we shower! That leaves our scalp flower fresh and saves the wighat from the wear and tear of being shampooed and dried every day.

And we save an absolute fortune on styling products and hairspray!

We leave our apartment knowing that our wighat is perfectly coiffed and NO ONE will even guess it isn't our own lustrous locks.

by Anonymousreply 47July 18, 2020 6:13 PM

R43 Did you have FUT (Strip harvesting) or FUE type of treatment? What do you mean by transplants never took?

by Anonymousreply 52July 18, 2020 6:33 PM

R49 No, they aren't

by Anonymousreply 53July 18, 2020 6:42 PM

While there are all sort of new wigs and treatments, in the end, you should ask yourself how long you'd be willing to go to the effort and how ridiculous you'd feel when you inevitably had to tell someone with whom you've gotten close (on the off chance they didn't already know).

The ones that really bother me are where they glue hair pieces directly to the scalp. That just can't be healthy, let alone comfortable.

by Anonymousreply 80July 19, 2020 3:07 PM

R78, it’s the angel fringe in back that makes me want assbabies.

Any balding guy can wear full wig, a cap, or hat when nervous. It’s hygienic.

Ask someone who hates you to rate your head. You may have awesome structure (Howie Long, Mitch Pileggi).

by Anonymousreply 81July 19, 2020 3:24 PM

R37 do you have prostate issues as well? The dosage for propecia (finesteride) is 1 mg for hair loss. My dermatologist prescribes the 5mg for me and i break it up into 4ths. The 1mg pills still have the propecia name and aren’t generic.

by Anonymousreply 82July 19, 2020 3:44 PM

Which of the hair loss drugs leads to permanent impotence? Which would be more important, some hair regrowth or never getting laid again?

OP, if you don't want to shave your head, crop it close and grow some facial hair. And if you haven't already, beef up your chest and arms. Trust me, you won't miss having hair on your head.

by Anonymousreply 83July 19, 2020 4:34 PM

No, don't beef up. You will look like a douchebag thug or like you just came out of prison. Shaved head with beard and slim body

by Anonymousreply 84July 20, 2020 10:29 AM

I grew up with a high forehead and used to ask my parents why I couldn’t have bangs, lol. Finally in HS, I said fuck it! I am who I am. I had an athletic body from playing sports and back then you didn’t have EVERYBODY lifting like you do today. I still got a lot of attention.

Fast forward to 48 yo and I started having the grays sneak in, so I shaved it. Everybody told me it looked great, but I figured they were humoring me. We already had some shaved heads at the company and I know the drill. Then a lady I worked with who used to own a beauty salon pulled me to the side. She said “not everybody has the head to pull off shaved, but you do. It really looks sexy”

And sure enough, the attention that I was getting socially picked up dramatically. Then I had to wonder if I should have shaved it when I was younger

by Anonymousreply 85July 20, 2020 11:32 AM

R22

What you call not getting busted is probably not being called out.

by Anonymousreply 86July 20, 2020 11:38 AM

Unless you have a really deformed lumpy head, just bite the bullet and shave it all off and grow a short beard (if you don't have one already) to balance out your face.

I may be biased (as I'm shaved head/bald with a beard) but that combo on a man always looks hot. Actually I don't think I can be biased as I was into it when I still had hair.

It is far less maintenance than worrying about wigs etc, you can do everything you need to from home yourself, and literally the only drawback I can think of is that if it's sunny make sure you wear a hat.

by Anonymousreply 87July 20, 2020 12:00 PM

I agree with R83. Get built, and with the beard and shaved head you will look twice as hot as you do now.

I don't personally think the scalp micropigment thing is a good idea - it might look good while you're young, but can you imagine being in your 60s+ with a tattooed head? That's just gonna look really weird.

by Anonymousreply 88July 20, 2020 12:15 PM

get built but no beard ever. Such a cliche, the bald guy with beard.

by Anonymousreply 89July 20, 2020 12:37 PM

R83 The idea that propecia or any other hair loss drug can cause perm inanimate impotency has no fact. It is just men who have impotency who want to blame something.

There is no reason why a drug that stops DHT production would lead to impotency once the drug was stopped. Even then less than 2% of people who experience some impotency with Propecia do not once they get off it.

I have a slight libido decrease with propecia but the confidence I have more than makes up for that..

SOME men look good bald. Especially if they are built and manly. But a sort of fem BALD twink? Who wants him. Sad? Sure. But true.

OP keep your hair and confidence and get Propecia.

by Anonymousreply 91July 20, 2020 1:21 PM

R88 MP isn't permanent. It fades with time, so you have to do re touchups every few years. It isn't as deep as real tattoos, that get splashy and blueish with age

by Anonymousreply 92July 20, 2020 4:17 PM

I had a friend who started losing his hair in high school. Did the com over. Baseball hats, Goorin hats - practically kept them in business. Eventually, hair transplants. Didn't take. Had it done again. We lost touch a little bit, for a while. Then he got the glue-on hair for a long while. Finally he just got rid of that and shaved his head. Everyone thinks he looks good. Spent 10's of K's in money and ended up shaving his head.

by Anonymousreply 94July 20, 2020 4:33 PM

Miss OP: We advise being careful wearing a wighat in the sun. It is best to wear a scarf or a hat over the wighat.

Wighats will bleach out and get very brassy when in the sun and no sister can pull that look off.

Smart sisters keep a bottle of purple rinse handy to tone down the brassiness, giving a wighat a 100% natural look so that no one will ever suspect.

We find the best way to apply this rinse is to squeeze some in our washing machine when we are cleaning the wighat once a month.

by Anonymousreply 95July 20, 2020 8:28 PM

Possibly if it's a toupee if it's as well-made and discreet as can be and doesn't cover too much area. But a wig? No, other people ca almost always tell, and ultimately, wigs look weird and everyone notices.

If you get too bald, you might eventually have to shave your head a just embrace it, but that's down the road.
