She was the best thing about Who's The Boss, in my opinion.
Everything I've ever heard about her was that she's a very sweet person. Someone who worked in the office for the talent agency that Helmond was represented by recounted a story on here about how Helmond comforted him after his mothers death and that she sent flowers to the funeral. Says a lot about her.

I was a realtor in the early 90s in NYC and Katherine was a client. She had a wonderful rent controlled unit in London Terrace (Chelsea) but would give it up for the right coop if it had a walk in shower and separate tub in the master bath and be in a prewar building. At the time it was a tough order to find so she never purchased and I never made a commission working with her; however, she was so lovely it did not matter. In fact, she referred me 3 other clients who DID purchase over the next few years. Her kind spirit was special. RIP Katherine and thank you.

So! Are there others who thought that her much younger (15 years) "husband" was gay as the days are long?
I found this:
"That was the play Helmond was doing in New Hampshire summer stock when she met David, a 19-year-old assistant set designer and high school dropout from Dallas, where his father was an engineer in the aerospace industry. “Usually, summer stock is the end of a relationship,” Helmond cracks. “But David was not a child when I met him. He’d been out on his own some time.” “The leading lady and the assistant set designer,” Christian sighs. “Ah, the great love affair.” He lurked around her performances until, Helmond says, “his hot looks began to make headway.” Soon they moved in together."

She died died Saturday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at her home in Los Angeles.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, David Christian. She met him at The Hampton Playhouse Summer Stock Theater, where he was the set designer and she the leading lady.
"She was the love of my life," Christian said. "We spent 57 beautiful, wonderful, loving years together, which I will treasure forever. I've been with Katherine since I was 19 years old. The night she died, I saw that the moon was exactly half-full, just as I am now … half of what I’ve been my entire adult life."

I'm so glad the Susan Dey query was posted within the first 50 comments.
I remember the hoopla and outrage before the first episode of SOAP aired. My mother was livid about the program... priests having sex, I think there was supposed to be an abortion storyline, and there was a homosexual (well Mom really didn't care about that, but the media did).
However, Mom and I watched, she laughed (I don't think I got most of the jokes) and we watched it for the first few seasons, Then the show got stale fast, which was unfortunate, because the premise and characters were delightful.
Helmond was incredible as Jessica Tate.

She really was a genius on Soap and should have won the Emmy.
I believe she and Cathryn Damon were nominated every year, and Cathryn got one.
She was hilarious, of course, but absolutely nailed those big dramatic scenes: When Jessica said goodbye to Benson; when Jessica explained adoption to Corinne; and the exorcism above. She was the most affecting member of the entire super-talented cast.

She was the only reason to watch Who's the Boss. I really thought she'd won an Emmy for Soap. She should have won many. She was just brilliant as Jessica. I was pretty young when it originally aired--and it often DIDN'T air in my Bible Belt area--but I got into it when I was in college and one of the cable networks was showing the reruns. Rue McClanahan turned down the Catherine Daymon role on Soap.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | March 2, 2019 4:39 AM |
They had a rough time casting Mary Campbell. It's true, Rue turned them down. She wanted to play Jessica, but Katherine Helmond was already cast.
There were actually three pilots for Soap, with three different Mary Campbells. The first two were Salome Jens (Mae from Mary Hartman) and Sally Kemp (below).
It's a good thing the producers kept trying, because Cathryn Damon was perfection, especially with Katherine Helmond.

She had a small but memorably haunting role in the 1974 TV movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, in which Cicely Tyson plays a former slave who lives to be over 100, seeing in the Civil Rights movement. Helmond plays a poor woman in the south who lost her husband and son in the Civil War. She vents her sorrow and fury on the young Jane and another newly freed slave, blaming them for her misery.
The scene begins at 28:35.

She would've been a great Blanche. Rue McClanahan was great in the role, but Katherine had great body for her age (Rue not so much) and it would've made it more believable with lots of men wanting her. On the other hand, they couldn't have taken as many shots at her appearance like they did with Rue.
