Katherine Helmond is DEAD to me

She had a really hot bf.

She was nominated for 7 Emmys but never won? It’s a fucking epidemic of underappreciation!

Wow, and I thought it was only on "Who's the Boss?" that she got hot guys.

by Anonymousreply 5March 1, 2019 7:08 PM

I will be devastated if they don't use her stretched out face from "Brazil" in the next Oscar In Memorium.

by Anonymousreply 6March 1, 2019 7:08 PM

I always thought that she was a good actress, but homely.

by Anonymousreply 7March 1, 2019 7:08 PM

Hats off to her. She was great. I hope she went on her own terms and without pain.

by Anonymousreply 8March 1, 2019 7:09 PM

I thought she was always 89.

by Anonymousreply 9March 1, 2019 7:13 PM

That's sad, I loved her. Mona WAS the boss.

by Anonymousreply 10March 1, 2019 7:15 PM

She was the best thing about Who's The Boss, in my opinion.

Everything I've ever heard about her was that she's a very sweet person. Someone who worked in the office for the talent agency that Helmond was represented by recounted a story on here about how Helmond comforted him after his mothers death and that she sent flowers to the funeral. Says a lot about her.

by Anonymousreply 11March 1, 2019 7:17 PM

That guy was her husband. They were married for 50 years.

And yes, he was hot af.

by Anonymousreply 12March 1, 2019 7:17 PM

My straight brothers called her "that cool old chick with the big tits"

by Anonymousreply 13March 1, 2019 7:18 PM

I was a realtor in the early 90s in NYC and Katherine was a client. She had a wonderful rent controlled unit in London Terrace (Chelsea) but would give it up for the right coop if it had a walk in shower and separate tub in the master bath and be in a prewar building. At the time it was a tough order to find so she never purchased and I never made a commission working with her; however, she was so lovely it did not matter. In fact, she referred me 3 other clients who DID purchase over the next few years. Her kind spirit was special. RIP Katherine and thank you.

by Anonymousreply 18March 1, 2019 7:28 PM

So! Are there others who thought that her much younger (15 years) "husband" was gay as the days are long?

I found this:

"That was the play Helmond was doing in New Hampshire summer stock when she met David, a 19-year-old assistant set designer and high school dropout from Dallas, where his father was an engineer in the aerospace industry. “Usually, summer stock is the end of a relationship,” Helmond cracks. “But David was not a child when I met him. He’d been out on his own some time.” “The leading lady and the assistant set designer,” Christian sighs. “Ah, the great love affair.” He lurked around her performances until, Helmond says, “his hot looks began to make headway.” Soon they moved in together."

She died died Saturday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at her home in Los Angeles.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, David Christian. She met him at The Hampton Playhouse Summer Stock Theater, where he was the set designer and she the leading lady.

"She was the love of my life," Christian said. "We spent 57 beautiful, wonderful, loving years together, which I will treasure forever. I've been with Katherine since I was 19 years old. The night she died, I saw that the moon was exactly half-full, just as I am now … half of what I’ve been my entire adult life."

Tony Danza’s comments about her are absolutely lovely. He really respected her as a person and a co-worker, you can tell he’s crushed by the news.

by Anonymousreply 42March 1, 2019 9:35 PM

What was he supposed to say, "thanks for making my soul-crushing shit show one iota less shitty, you senile old bat"? That wouldn't have been very nice. And I also doubt he even knows the phrase "Iota" unless it's to say "Iota Mafia my career."

Judith Light gave a statement to the Los Angeles Times: “Katherine Helmond was a remarkable human being and an extraordinary artist; generous, gracious, charming and profoundly funny,” said Helmond’s “Who’s the Boss?” costar Judith Light in a statement to The Times. “She taught me so much about life and inspired me indelibly by watching her work. Katherine was a gift to our business and to the world, and will be deeply missed.”

I'm so glad the Susan Dey query was posted within the first 50 comments.

I remember the hoopla and outrage before the first episode of SOAP aired. My mother was livid about the program... priests having sex, I think there was supposed to be an abortion storyline, and there was a homosexual (well Mom really didn't care about that, but the media did).

However, Mom and I watched, she laughed (I don't think I got most of the jokes) and we watched it for the first few seasons, Then the show got stale fast, which was unfortunate, because the premise and characters were delightful.

Helmond was incredible as Jessica Tate.

Helmond & Guillaume were the heart of Soap. Mulligan was annoying--worse on "Empty Nest" becaue he had a bigger role. She was great on Raymond.

by Anonymousreply 72March 1, 2019 11:35 PM

I liked it when Mulligan thought he made himself invisible. But I agree R 72. Soap was ahead of it's time. Where can I watch it again?

Have the likes of Diana Canova, Jennifer Salt, and that other Baio boy commented?

Who gives a shit about that languid turdface Susan Dey?

And I just found out that hot daddy Donnelly Rhodes died last year. That guy knew how to spread his gonorrhoea across the gender spectrum. You had to want it to hurt a bit and be willing to laugh and drink about it. He only drank to take the paranoid edge off all that weed he smoked. Thick like a beercan and he knew how to use it. Giant balls.

She really was a genius on Soap and should have won the Emmy.

I believe she and Cathryn Damon were nominated every year, and Cathryn got one.

She was hilarious, of course, but absolutely nailed those big dramatic scenes: When Jessica said goodbye to Benson; when Jessica explained adoption to Corinne; and the exorcism above. She was the most affecting member of the entire super-talented cast.

Rue McClanahan turned down the Catherine Daymon role on Soap.

by Anonymousreply 109March 2, 2019 4:39 AM

They had a rough time casting Mary Campbell. It's true, Rue turned them down. She wanted to play Jessica, but Katherine Helmond was already cast.

There were actually three pilots for Soap, with three different Mary Campbells. The first two were Salome Jens (Mae from Mary Hartman) and Sally Kemp (below).

It's a good thing the producers kept trying, because Cathryn Damon was perfection, especially with Katherine Helmond.

Helmond plays a poor woman in the south who lost her husband and son in the Civil War. She vents her sorrow and fury on the young Jane and another newly freed slave, blaming them for her misery.

She would've been a great Blanche. Rue McClanahan was great in the role, but Katherine had great body for her age (Rue not so much) and it would've made it more believable with lots of men wanting her. On the other hand, they couldn't have taken as many shots at her appearance like they did with Rue.

STFU, R139, or get the fuck out of here. “DEAD to me” is the DL format. This is DL, not the Springfield Ladies Auxiliary.

by Anonymousreply 141March 2, 2019 6:32 PM

Dead to Me has been around for years. We don't change everything around here every time some sensitive prisspot deigns it to be offensive to her visage.

by Anonymousreply 142March 2, 2019 6:34 PM

R142 Not offensive, just juvenile, unclever and tired.

[quote] It is used too much here.

and wasn't even funny the first time.

This is SO not your moment, Mary.

A great actress is gone and we are discussing HER.

by Anonymousreply 145March 2, 2019 6:49 PM

Smell YOU, R143.

Anyone want to bet she gets no Oscar mention next year ?Only one great film appearance.

by Anonymousreply 149March 2, 2019 11:12 PM

I think she will, R149. Way more beloved than the likes of Dorothy Malone and even Carol Channing.

by Anonymousreply 150March 2, 2019 11:14 PM

I loved her but as a TV actress.

by Anonymousreply 151March 3, 2019 5:15 AM

I didn't realize that she died on Feb 23, but the news wasn't released until yesterday.

Katherine Helmond

Gorgeous, funny, great ol' broad. Loved her in "Soap."

I wonder whether the people who remember her for her second TV series role lived in places where the ABC station wouldn’t carry her first one.

by Anonymousreply 154March 3, 2019 3:17 PM

R154, or they aren’t old enough to remember Soap.

by Anonymousreply 155March 3, 2019 3:19 PM

That reunion video of her is tragic.
