Gemma Arterton will play Dusty in an upcoming biopic.
Dusty was with Norma Tanega for awhile. Here's Norma singing a quirky little tune called "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" in 1966:

Related to Buffalo Springfield.

When Dusty Springfield was in concert, Princess Margaret was in attendance in the royal box. Dusty had a huge gay and lesbian following. At the concert, the gay men in the audience adored her and were quite vocal with their worshipful praise. Dusty said "It's nice to see the royalty isn't confined in the box!" It was hilarious. Princess Margaret was not pleased. She demanded an apology and she prepared a written apology letter for Dusty to sign. Reportedly, Dusty signed it.

Princess Margaret was a cunt.

Bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 24, 2019 5:18 PM |
I really like those three albums she did in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s: It Begins Again (1978), Living Without Your Love (1979), and White Heat (1982). It’s a shame she didn’t make another album until Reputation in 1990.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 24, 2019 5:23 PM |
Love her! Her sound, her openness to soul, her hard work. But not a happy person. Must have been hard to be a well-adjusted lesbian in 50s 60s England.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 24, 2019 5:28 PM |
Being undiagnosed bi-polar didn't help either, R22.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 24, 2019 5:36 PM |
They filmed a concert she did in London in the 70s at the Albert Hall. It was painfully bad.
She was so butch and she tried to hide it behind all that hair and make-up. She looked like a clown.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 24, 2019 5:44 PM |
I didn’t think she looked like a clown. She didn’t wear any more makeup in the ‘60s than other female pop singers. I thought she was beautifully made up in the ‘70s.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 24, 2019 5:56 PM |
R25
She looks like a young Bea Arthur.

R29, wasn’t that in the 80s? I think she looks nice in this interview:

"Dusty in Memphis" Obviously you're not familiar with it. Either that or you enjoy being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian.
It's brilliant all the way around. One of the very best albums from the 1960s by a solo female artist.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 24, 2019 6:40 PM |
Dusty in Memphis was definitely her high-water mark, but she had a lot of albums that I like just as well: A Brand New Me, Cameo, The Look of Love.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 24, 2019 6:50 PM |
[quote]"Dusty in Memphis" Obviously you're not familiar with it.
Well, you're wrong. I've had the record for years. Vinyl and CD. Even she said she struggled making it in the shadows of truly great singers like Aretha Franklin.
& the gays rate Dusty above Aretha. What a joke!

[quote]the gays rate Dusty above Aretha.
This gay does. Never got Aretha.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 24, 2019 7:05 PM |
Aretha...now that's overrated. She was ok in small doses but her dim-bulb fans equate caterwauling with singing.
Dusty interpreted lyrics. Aretha just yelled them.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 24, 2019 7:25 PM |
Dusty and Aretha had quite a lot in common: Mental illness, traumatic childhoods, physically abusive relationships etc.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 24, 2019 7:30 PM |
Oh, and substance abuse.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 24, 2019 7:31 PM |
Dusty did have rather a long face but her eyes, cheekbones and smile were lovely.
I've always thought this style (wig?) was her most flattering.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 24, 2019 7:35 PM |
Wonder what she looks like now...
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 24, 2019 8:13 PM |
[quote] the gays rate Dusty above Aretha.
Actually, only sad, fat queens need to "rate" anyone.
I love and appreciate the work of both artists. I happen to like Dusty more, but that's because her music resonates with me more, not because of any chart anything, or "everything else thinks this so why don't you" fuckery.

Late 70s Dusty singing about a man in the closet.....

by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 24, 2019 9:44 PM |
R36 insists on showing her ignorance about soul music. You’re aware there are many sub-genres within soul, right? Aretha’s style isn’t the be-all, end-all.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 24, 2019 9:55 PM |
Dusty was my mother's favourite. Love her.

It is. She was THE QUEEN OF SOUL.
& there's no way you can accuse me of being ignorant about soul.
Listen - you gurls love Dusty and The Supremes (& probably Lulu) and that's fine. I won't post again.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 24, 2019 10:12 PM |
She was the queen of SCREAMing.

This would be called cultural appropriation now!
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 28, 2019 3:43 PM |
Dusty in Memphis is perfection. It never occurred to me to compare Dusty to Aretha, I’m not sure I understand that at all. People she shared songs with - Cilla and Dionne - I get that. Give me Dusty any day.
I remember a clip of her hosting top of the pops (in b&w) and John Lennon was incredibly rude to her. Now it’s obvious to see it was because she’s a lesbian. Although I think he was generally an arsehole to everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 1, 2019 11:11 PM |
Dusty opened her second album with "Won't Be Long". She went on to cover "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream".
And of course, Aretha made sure to cover those honky bitches who joined her label via "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Oh Me Oh My".
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 2, 2019 12:16 AM |
[quote]Although I think he was generally an arsehole to everyone.
Correct.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 2, 2019 1:48 AM |
R61, I’ve never thought that of that clip (which is one of my favorites, combining the Beatles and Dusty!) as John being rude to her. I suppose the “let’s see your scabs” line (or whatever it is) IS rude, but comes off to me as playful in context of how he says it.
I’ve always taken the “She Loves You!” announcement with Dusty responding coyly “she does?!” as a gay reference. I bet she knew all about him, too.
Supposedly Linda McCartney and Dusty became quite close during the period when they were both fighting breast cancer, and Dusty was devastated by Linda’s death.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 2, 2019 2:32 AM |
Here’s the John and Paul section of the interview, btw:

When the Motown artists went to England, Dusty aired them on her show. For this duet, Berry Gordy wanted her to choose Diana Ross, but Dusty insisted upon Martha Reeves. I'm so glad Dusty did so; the two sound great together.
The two remained good friends until Dusty's death.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 2, 2019 5:06 AM |
I’m sure her gay fandom got a boost when she recorded “What Have I Done To Deserve This” with Pet Shop Boys in 87.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 2, 2019 6:35 AM |
Dusty is easy for drag queens to do!
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 2, 2019 6:35 PM |
I always thought Dusty's early 80s album should have been a hit. Very Pat Benetar-esque.
Love the songs, although apparently she didn't and was in a weird relationship with Carole Pope at the time.
