I remember watching this movie on cable back around the time it was released and didn't think much of it, but after watching it last night I couldn't help but think that this movie would never get released today. Brooke Shields was only 12 at the time and the movie feature full nude scenes of her as she played a child prostitute. I don't recall the nudity being there when I saw it on cable, but it was there on the DVD. Some of the scenes with Brooke and Susan Sarandon were almost as shocking. Susan Sarandon flaunting her boobs in the presence of a 12 year old. Has anyone else seen this film or remember much controversy during its initial release?
Pretty Baby (1978) starring Brooke Shields

I recall more controversy about the subject matter than the nudity, but I am the same age as Brooke so my memory could be inaccurate.

I was 8 years old when it came out, so of course I didn't see it. But whenever I saw the ads for it I would feel titillation. Obviously it was an unwholesome film, and the people who sexualized Shields are criminals.

Yes, the film is controversial in today’s society but I don’t believe there was much controversy at the time?
Not very vocal controversy anyway.
Shields was 11.

Yes, it was very controversial at the time - it even made the cover of People Magazine

It and other controversial movies could be made today....the studios would just need to push back against the social media mob and the trolls in the media. Instead they fold at even the slightest controversy.

Brook's mom pimped her out. At age 10 Brooke posed for nude pics in a Playboy publication called Sugar 'n' Spice.

Brooke must've been a strong individual to have come out unscathed from an early childhood movie career.

The freepers who whine about the social media mob are the first one to say football players should be fired for kneeling.

Forget Brooke Shields. The thing I remember most about the movie was Keith Carradine as the photographer.

I saw it in New York when it came out...no one blinked an eye.
"flaunting her boobs in the presence of a 12 year old."
What's the big deal? It's not like a guy flashed his dick.

It could be made in Europe with European actors. There are quite a few modern French movies with 12 and 13 year old actresses in nude scenes.

Brooke apparently didn't like working with Susan Sarandon on this film.

Doubt it

I loved this movie when I was younger. I thought it was a really interesting story. In my twenties I realised it was controversial because she was so young in it. It didn't shock me but I watched it in my teens.

Louis Malle's masterpiece is "Murmur of the Heart", which features incest between a young teenager and his beautiful mother. His career was always up and down, and "Pretty Woman" was down for me.

As others have mentioned, it is done in Europe and they don't lose their minds. If you want a very recent example, "Girl" which premiered at last year's Cannes film festival supposedly has underage male nudity.

Brooke Shields wrote in her book that Susan Sarandon was mean to her on the set, and actually slapped her HARD during a scene, when the slap was suppose to be faked

What the hell is this about a Playboy publication called "Sugar and Spice", which published naked pictures of 10-year-old Brooke?
Was there actually a mainstream magazine devoted to softcore kiddy porn, and it wasn't shut down by the police or howling mobs?

The 70s didn't do howling mobs.

r21, you must have missed Anita Bryant and her supporters

Google Brooke Shields Playboy. Articles about her 10 year old Playboy shoot are all over the internet as well as photos still. Shocker they haven’t taken them down.

There were howling mobs of moral majority types voting to overturn anti-discrimination laws
