She claimed she was brainwashed into joining the violent revolutionary group. Some (including author Jeffrey Toobin) say she was radicalized and willingly embraced violent crime while with the SLA, only to turn on them once it served her. What do you think?
45 years ago, the SLA kidnapped Patty Hearst.

I don't buy the brainwashing. It was a con.

I think it was a change of pace and made her feel, like, relevant

I think: how in the fuck can it be 45 years ago?!

Of course she wasn't brainwashed. She was radicalized, as Toobin said. Proof of that is her behavior after she was captured: While being booked into jail, she listed her occupation as "Urban Guerilla" and asked her attorney to relay the following message: "Tell everybody that I'm smiling, that I feel free and strong and I send my greetings and love to all the sisters and brothers out there."

Fact is - she WAS kidnapped and she was abused. If she sided with them to survive, then fuck it. They had killed people and she knew it.
I saw a disgusting documentary that basically said she received all of these favors and practically dismissed her kidnapping and abuse - that it was no big deal and she easily changed over on her own will.

How is being radicalized by your kidnappers different from being brainwashed, R4. What a stupid argument.

She was gang raped for days.

I saw her in an airport while on my way to my grandmother's house. I didn't notice or recognize her till her name was called out by an airline employee looking for her.

Fuck all that Tanya shit, Patty will forever have my heart for her hysterical turn in Serial Mom. Anyone who can come through an ordeal like that and still have a sense of humor is a survivor, baby.

what a spoiled cunty brat. universally despised....

Catherine Hearst was such a prototypical, delicious rich bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 5, 2019 4:44 AM |
Wow, Catherine Hearst has very strong genes. Patty and all her daughters look just like her.

She was thrown in a trunk of a car, locked in a closet for weeks, repeatedly raped. You'd come out a little confused too. It has happened before and since: the Stockholm Syndrome, Elizabeth Smart stayed with her captors for a year living right behind her own house in the woods.
and Jeffrey Toobin is a sleazy guy who fathered a child while still married and slanted his book against Hearst because she refused to be interviewed for it as did her whole family. There's a reason FX dropped the mini-series that was going to be made from the book because of #metoo blame the victim concerns.

I dunno OP. Maybe we could ask R4 to volunteer as a human guinea pig, just drop him off at the nearest ISIS recruiting centre with a note pinned to his straightjacket requesting the Patty Hearst Special. We'll check in on him after a couple of weeks of gang rape and torture and determine if he's been brainwashed or radicalised.

Read her autobiography "Every Secret Thing". She was physically and sexually assaulted to the point where she was unable to function normally, mentally or emotionally. Her conviction was a scandal.

Who the fuck cares?!

If you're ever in LA, there's a Los Angeles Police Museum in Highland Park that has an incredible permanent display dedicated to the SLA kidnapping of Hearst and the police shootout. They have displays of weapons seized from the SLA, etc.

I had the CNN show on in the background and she sounds like snooty bitch who never thanked anyone for their help getting her off on the charges. Now of course she is Chris Hardwick's MIL who defended his dumb ass.

Those days where seeing images of Patty and Tania in Newsweek seemed like such a thrill.

I believe the brainwashing
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 5, 2019 6:38 AM |
R2 - like relevant? or relevant?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 5, 2019 6:40 AM |
I also believe she was brainwashed. I think the only reason she served time was because she was wealthy.

There is a film based on her memoir starring Natasha Richardson and Dana Delaney. That shows how she was so confused about where to go since she felt the FBI would kill her like they did the rest of the SLA in the famous shootout.
There is also an excellent documentary called Guerilla (I linked it from youtube) that explains a lot of it.
