Never thought I'd use those words in the same sentence but there you go.
Nicholas Hoult is a young, sexy J.R.R. Tolkien.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 19, 2020 3:04 PM |
He was an awkward looking kid, but grew up to be a really good looking young man. That said, a wide face and a lack of bone structure usually mean deteriorated looks in middle age.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 2, 2019 10:51 PM |
R1 you talkin about Hoult or JRRT?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 2, 2019 10:52 PM |
Hoult is good looking but does NOTHING for me. He has no sex appeal at all.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 2, 2019 10:55 PM |
Hoult, R2.

Tolkien was an incredibly devout Catholic. His widowed Mother converted when he and his brother were tiny and raised them Catholic. He went to Mass every single day. He wrote this about his Catholic beliefs - see below. If the biopic ignores this CENTRAL pillar of his life then it's a complete waste of time.
1. "But for me that Church of which the Pope is the acknowledged head on earth has as chief claim that it is the one that has (and still does) ever defended the Blessed Sacrament, and given it most honour, and put (as Christ plainly intended) in the prime place."
2. "Our Lady: upon which all my own small perception of beauty both in majesty and simplicity is founded.”
3. “Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament....There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death. By the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste—or foretaste—of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man’s heart desires."

Much like his obsession with Catholicism.

R7
Like I said: if the biopic ignores it - as I suspect it will because, well, it's got people like you in mind and possible people like you making it - then it's not only failed to understand Tolkien it will have deliberately and deceptively misrepresented him.
But that will keep people like you happy because you just KNOW it all, already.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 2, 2019 11:23 PM |
His mother basically died in poverty because she chose to convert and her family disowned her. I can certainly see why he'd have a very strong attachment to the church if he considered his own beloved mother a martyr.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 2, 2019 11:28 PM |
I wouldn't be surprised if they include it. I personally hope they include his post wartime psychosis.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 2, 2019 11:31 PM |
He so bummed C.S. Lewis
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 3, 2019 1:33 AM |
He did live an interesting life, so I might check this out despite normally detesting biopics.
Yes, he was devoted to his faith, and was often an intolerant product of his time. That stuff shouldn’t be ignored to appease a modern audience.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 3, 2019 1:45 AM |
Hiddleston looks more like JRRT than Hoult does.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 3, 2019 1:51 AM |
Will there be dong?

Someone wrote this on tumblr:
"On Tolkien, the biopic: A couple of months ago I had the chance to see a pre-screening of the Tolkien biopic, and holy freaking cow was I in love. I can’t tell any details because I signed an NDA (btw felt pretty cool signing it), but I CAN tell you my impressions as someone who feels pretty well versed in Tolkien’s life and works.
It was done with such respect and care, guys. It is beautiful in its portrayal of friendship, longing, heartache, sorrow, joy, hope, and so much more.
There were nods to things that people who have a knowledge of Tolkien’s life and work will catch without them being obvious or jarring if you don’t. There were a number of moments/events that I was really hoping were going to be included even though they weren’t vital to his history, and when I saw them, I can’t express the joy I felt.
I have so much of my personality and history and values tied to Tolkien that there were moments when I was crying at what was happening on screen, and it was not a scene that was meant to be sad. I just felt as though I was watching a piece of my own history playing out and I still react very emotionally just thinking about it.
I cannot say loud enough or too many times that if you have any sort of love for Tolkien and/or The Lord of the Rings, you need to go see this movie when it comes out. It is so beautiful and funny and heartbreaking and wonderful"
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 3, 2019 1:54 AM |
R13 holy crap he really does!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 3, 2019 1:55 AM |
I'd much rather watch Nicholas though. He's a talented guy.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 3, 2019 1:59 AM |
Hoult has really been impressing me in recent years. He's a real chameleon as an actor, he's been an Australian skull boy in one movie, a gawky American scientist who turns into a blue superhero in another, and a wicked but brilliant 17th century fop in another. He's been good in everything I've seen him in, and I think he's going to be one of those Brit actors who will work forever and been good in everything they do.
Nice to hear he's done this, and it's even nicer to hear a good review. Quite frankly Tolkien's life was dull by lots of people's standards after he grew up and became a professor, he lived the life of the mind if anyone ever did. Turning personal suffering into works of the imagination is hardly the easiest subject for a filmmaker to tackle, glad to hear they have have done it right.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 3, 2019 5:48 AM |
I keep waiting for Hoult to star in the biopic of David Gilmore from Pink Floyd. He's a dead ringer.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 3, 2019 5:57 AM |
∆ sudden newfound appreciation for Pink Floyd.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 3, 2019 2:24 PM |
I'm just grateful they didn't cast Eddie Redmayne.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 3, 2019 2:27 PM |
Yes I'm curious how they got around the Compulsory Redmayne Casting Act of 2015.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 3, 2019 3:06 PM |
Betcha Redmayne asked for too much money.
This has got to be a low-budget film, and Redmayne is an Oscar winner now.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 3, 2019 9:35 PM |
Another role that would have been good for Harry Lloyd.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 3, 2019 10:19 PM |
Didn't we see the Hoult peen recently? Someone remind me...
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 3, 2019 11:33 PM |
First Trailer. Just a teaser but it looks like they'll have a bit if magic realism going on. Which would actually work well if they address his psychotic break during the war.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 12, 2019 3:48 PM |
Looks interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 12, 2019 5:11 PM |
I'll see it, in the unlikely event that it's released within a thousand miles of me.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 12, 2019 5:40 PM |

You can say that again! When I first watched ABOUT A BOY long ago, I thought his character was a girl. haha

by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 6, 2019 5:42 PM |
I want to see this, but damn was that trailer ever heavy-handed.
"A Fellowship....a Journey...an Alliance..."
WE GET IT.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 6, 2019 6:08 PM |
Gonna be sad.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 7, 2019 3:52 AM |
yea, hoult is the hottest young piece of ass in town. good actor too.
did kevin spacey suk his ass out when they did that movie?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 7, 2019 4:01 AM |
movie looks damn good: historical, English, turn of century, college eroticism and fraternal buddys.
knickers!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 7, 2019 4:04 AM |
R36 he would with Bryan Singer too.
So yes. Probably.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 7, 2019 4:08 AM |
Some people are afraid the movie will be gay. The comments are hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 1, 2019 2:52 PM |
Jesus, there's no hope for humanity. We can't watch a biopic unless the star is a hot piece of ass. Which JRR was not.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 1, 2019 2:56 PM |
He had an interesting face. Very Edwardian.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 1, 2019 2:59 PM |
Completely agree, r42, but not a studmuffin. So why not cast someone with an interesting Edwardian face instead of a smoldering hottie? I think we all know the answer.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 1, 2019 3:02 PM |
R11 English please?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 19, 2019 3:40 PM |

It means he really depressed C.S. Lewis.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 30, 2019 5:53 PM |
R52 has been common knowledge for a decade. Why is it being dredged up now? Do people want to fuck up the film release or something?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 30, 2019 9:55 PM |
Yeah I remember reading that about his son before years ago. It seems like a couple of newspapers really want the film to flop. They've also been pushing a story that the family didn't approve of the film. They dont, but they never do. They condemned the LOTR trillogy also and anything else they can't make money from.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 30, 2019 11:52 PM |
If they wanted the film to flop, they wouldn't be giving it attention
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 1, 2019 4:11 AM |
Tolkien became an orphan at age 12 and at his mother's direction, he and his brother became wards of a Roman Catholic priest, who objected to the liaison with Edith and would not allow him to marry her until he was 21

that bryan singer may have sucked it, not faze me at all.
hoping hugh Jackman had a crac at it.
hoult was amazing in the jd salinger epic. surely he fought off kevin spacey, but who cares, Oscar man!
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 6, 2019 1:06 AM |
I found the casting appropriate given that Javert was a POC in the book too.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 6, 2019 1:06 AM |
the Sonja morgan library !!!
git it rite mary.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 6, 2019 1:07 AM |
R62∆wrong thread.
I loved it. I like that the relationship with Edith wasn't a perfect romance. Their marriage was troubled IRL but they loved each other deeply.
I'm glad they included the real letter from Geoffrey Smith at the end. Heartbreaking.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 6, 2019 1:12 AM |
was he gay? Tolkien? any frontal or ass?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 6, 2019 1:16 AM |
R75 it's hinted that Smith was. Sadly no nudity

by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 10, 2019 6:55 PM |
R72 I have. It wasn't sentimental. Best movie I've seen this year.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 11, 2019 12:31 AM |
I would imagine the movie doesn't address his rabid antisemitism.
The dwarves were based on racist Jewish tropes.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 11, 2019 12:58 AM |
IF one accepts that Tolkien's dwarves were based on the Jews of Europe rather than, say, the dwarves of northern European legends... is that racist if the dwarves in the books aren't evil? At all?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 11, 2019 4:30 AM |
He liked the Jews, and the Dwarves.
"Personally I should be inclined to refuse to give any Bestätigung [confirmation] (although it happens that I can), and let a German translation go hang. In any case I should object strongly to any such declaration appearing in print. I do not regard the (probable) absence of all Jewish blood as necessarily honourable; and I have many Jewish friends, and should regret giving any colour to the notion that I subscribed to the wholly pernicious and unscientific race-doctrine."
"My name is Tolkien, anglicized from To(l)kiehn = tollkühn, and came from Saxony in the 18th century. It is not Jewish in origin, though I should consider it an honour if it were."

by Anonymous | reply 80 | May 13, 2019 4:32 AM |
Stuffy and unremarkable.
I saw it today. Though Tolkien’s WWI service was commendable, they didn’t focus on that. His accomplishments at Oxford are notable. But I think his personal life was too ordinary for a movie.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 13, 2019 8:00 AM |
alas, one must have heart n soul to get this lovely film....
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 13, 2019 12:46 PM |
r82, I think you're confusing an uninspired biopic with a movie masterpiece
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 13, 2019 5:11 PM |
I saw Tolkien yesterday and quite enjoyed it. I'm glad I ignored the generally lukewarm reviews. It's a slow and quiet movie (except for the Battle of the Somme sequences) but the life of a young scholar/bookworm and budding philologist is unlikely to generate much screen excitement. Harry Gilby who plays the boy Tolkien shares a striking resemblance with Nicholas Hoult. The other child to adult transitions are less convincing e.g. the Edith Bratt of Mimi Keene into Lily Collins.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | May 16, 2019 3:59 PM |
