Clocks
Everyone seems to have a big, statement clock in the living/ sitting room, do you? Are grandfather clocks timeless and classy, or are they tacky? Would you ever have a cuckoo clock in your home?
Is having some type of large, or ornate clock a must have for the home?

I hate clocks on display, except at the airport or somewhere that it makes sense. Being reminded of the time constantly is not relaxing to me. Also dislike cuckoo or grandfather clocks. How do people sleep through that?

I have a grandfather clock I bought for $1200 in 1993, which was big money for me. The saleswoman assured me it chimed once an hour and the chime could be turned off. When the clock guy came in and set it up in my house it turned out it chimed every 15 minutes and could NOT be turned off. It’s been 1 o’clock for years in my old living room.

R5 well at least it's the correct time twice a day

I like clocks, they're a reminder of the complexity of the universe and man's imperfect attempts to tame it.

When I can't sleep, I sit quietly in the dark listening to the clocks in my house tick. It's very calming.

r5 just run it. in 3 days you won't even hear it even if you are standing next to it. You'll only hear it when you wonder if it is running.

I love clocks, but you have to be careful which one you get if they chime. It also depends on where you put it in the house. I had an English wall clock with Westminster chimes on the wall in my mcmansion - that I placed in the upstairs hallway, in the middle of the house - but I had to mothball it when I downgraded to a much smaller townhome as it was just too loud and there was no good place to position it that the sound was muffled.

My grandma had an antique cuckoo clock that had little dancing figures in it that would slide out and dance. I had just watched the terrifying movie "the Indian in the cupboard", and I was certain the figures came to life once inside the clock.
So like any rational child, I pried them off the clock, smashed them with a brick and set them on fire. I was grounded for a month.

I don't see any use for clocks really because everything has the time on it nowadays, the TV, your phone, the oven... I do have one of those Kit Kat clocks--the one with the eyes and the tail that move in sync--in my retro themed kitchen, though. Like someone else said, I don't like being constantly reminded of the time.

I love clocks, I have one that chimes every 15 minutes and once for each hour on the hour and I love it, barely notice it chiming now. I have always wanted to do a wall of clocks similar to below, but just never have done it.

You can't muffle the chimes or remove the clappers? Seems a. pity to have a clock you can't use.

I love old clocks. I had several for many years. I find the sound of them ticking away very comforting. They chime all night long, and I haven't noticed that in decades, like R9 and R16 suggested. You get used to it.
Technically, they are called "tall-case clocks" in the auction and antiques business. The term "grandfather clock" came about long after the clocks themselves did. The 18th and 19th century versions can be gorgeous pieces of craftsmanship. The cheap 20th century versions and the knock-offs, not so much.

I have a very nice onyx and bronze Art Deco clock on my living room mantel. Since my house was built in the 20s, I think it suits the house.

R8 I agree. I have an oversized clock like OP is referring to and the ticking late at night in the dark is so soothing. I've always been relaxed by rythmic background noise. In fact, when the batteries die I notice instantly, the silence is more annoying than the ticking for me...

I have had a Ravensburg clock for years. I realize it’s not to everyone’s taste but I really like it.

I hate mechanical clocks. I hate ticking. I hate asynchronous timing, when devices are off time and you can hear them going click click cl cl ick ick cl click cl click
No thanks. I like the nice modern digital devices, synchonized to an NTP time source, self setting and always correct and *silent*

I have 2 clocks - both family heirlooms - a french white marble mantle clock and a wooden Eastlake ish tabletop model - lol sometimes they work, most times they dont. Humidity, heat and maybe phases of the moon affect these temperamental creatures.

R34 try cleaning the works with an artist brush you dip in kerosene. Sit at a table and put an old movie you love on, and go slow and wipe the brush on a clean paper towel and redip back in kerosene and do the next gear. If it is sometimes running, many times this will be enough to remove the dust and gums that slog it down, It is what they would start off doing at a clock shop.

In "Our Town" as Emily is leaving the land of the living she says goodbye to the pleasures of being alive: hot baths, food, coffee, new ironed dresses, her parents, sunflowers, sleeping and waking up and...clocks ticking.

Funny, I actually have that clock that R17, posted a picture of and hates. I bought it several years ago in Chicago at the Jewish Thriftstore and it was around $15.00 bucks, of course it cost more than that to get the mechanical part working. I love it and love that it lights up, it makes for a great night light.

I love my grandfather’s clock. It chimes every 15 minutes but it’s like white noise — I never hear it / pay attention to it.
