My vote goes to Harry Belafonte and Joan Fontaine from 'Island in the Sun'. They looked so damn purty together. But in real life Harry was banging the other Joan who worked on that film - Joan Collins.

R6 Yes, you're right:
[quote] Joan Fontaine received hundreds of hate letters, containing dimes and quarters, which read, "If you're so hard up that you have to work with a nigger..." They were post-marked from various parts of the country but they seemed to be dictated by one organization, as many of the phrases were identical.

The motto of my life is from" Something for Everyone," Angie Lansbury plays an impoverished German Countess who has seen better times. She refuses to face reality. She observes: "They tell us to adapt. A rat adapts; an eagle just sits in its cage and glares." How true.

[quote]Bullock has never been beautiful. She's funny, she's girl-next-door pretty and seemingly normal and non-threatening. Of course straight guys had a crush on her, I didn't say she was a repulsive hag. I said she wasn't beautiful.
But with the right leading man, together, they CAN make a beautiful couple.

R453 - A shameful omission, I agree. Hedy and a young suave Charles Boyer in "Algiers".
Speaking of Charles - Boyer and Bergman in "Gaslight".
Bergman and Leslie Howard in "Intermezzo"
And . . . Bergman and Cary Grant in "Notorious", Bergman and Gregory Peck in "Spellbound".
"Notorious" for the win though - oh that scene in the kitchen as the dinner burns in the oven and the camera circles around Grant and Bergman . . .

R460 Shearer looked awful in Idiot’s Delight. Yet another case of a bad movie wig:

Too many Clark Gable ones when he wasn't that hot and he was really, really short.
by Anonymous | reply 463 | January 30, 2019 11:46 PM |
Shearer and Gable were also great looking in “Strange Interlude” which is the first film where he debuted the Gable mustache.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | January 31, 2019 12:11 AM |
Gable was no great beauty but he looked so much better without that sleazy-looking moustache. I know it was his trademark but I never liked it.
Here he is in Mutiny on the Bounty with the future Mrs. Marlon Brando and sans the ugly moustache:
by Anonymous | reply 465 | January 31, 2019 12:13 AM |
R465 - I trust you are being ironic about the future Mrs Marlon Brando?
Brando married Tarita, who played that role in the next remake of Mutiny in . . . 1962. The Gable Mutiny was in . . . 1935. That woman in the photo would have been old enough to be Brando's Mum by 1962.

R483 it's devastating, isn't it? Many years ago I was able to identify the film by hearing just a snippet of the two on the radio, and won a prize. At the time, I'd never seen the film but knew of it and its stars, and those melodious voices were unmistakable.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | February 1, 2019 6:38 AM |
R490 - Come on - Gibson was so much prettier than Weaver in that film (one of my favourites of Weir's oeuvre) that women in the theatre when I saw it on first release burst out laughing when Weaver's character refuses to take Gibson's call begging her to go out with him.
Adding Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge in the updated filmed version of "Carmen".
And seconding the mention of Tequila Sunrise - what a feast for the eyes, and I don't mean the California beaches . . .
by Anonymous | reply 498 | February 1, 2019 1:37 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 501 | February 1, 2019 4:26 PM |
R501 Jarre's score was good but the best scene of the film used a track by Vangelis. I think this is one of the most beautiful scenes ever filmed:

R502 - I agree - that's the one where she walks to his office from the rain after she gets the inside info on the coup, no?
by Anonymous | reply 503 | February 2, 2019 12:24 AM |
God, yes, that scene in the rain and the Vangelis score in The Year of Living Dangerously is stunning. Weir is the consummate visual poet. When I first saw Picnic at Hanging Rock, I was mesmerized by the agonizing story of Sara's secret love for Miranda and the endless longing and loss at Mrs. Appleyard’s College for Young Ladies.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | February 2, 2019 1:09 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 511 | February 2, 2019 11:04 AM |
R511 Madeleine Carroll is one of the greatest screen beauties of all time. People just don’t talk as much about her incredible beauty because she appeared mostly in British movies in the 1930’s.
by Anonymous | reply 512 | February 2, 2019 1:19 PM |
R506 - Different strokes, as the old saying has it. Frankly, I didn't think there was a boring scene in the entire film. I also agree with the poster about Picnic at Hanging Rock - one thing Weir has a gift for is that mysterious thing called atmosphere.. But all right, taste is individual. A friend of mine says the world is divided into only two kinds of people: those who loved Only Lovers Left Alive and those who thought Jarmusch should have been put in prison for it.
He was only half kidding.

So I'll give another mention to Moira Shearer (dancing) and Marius Goring (conducting) in "The Red Shoes".
And, although they aren't classically handsome or beautiful, I'll add Rogers and Astaire in motion in their early films. You can't take your eyes off them when they start to move in films like "Swing Time".

R548 - Great mention, the film is "The Killers" and I rather like it. In later years, Burt was interviewed and this film was brought up, and Burt, who was quite youngin this film, admitted that in his first filmed clinches with the staggeringly beautiful Gardner he became sufficiently aroused that it was plainly visible and the crew cracked up.
What I find remarkable about Gardner is how natural her beauty was - she didn't require tonnes of work the way Rita Hayworth or other beauties did. You see photos of her at 16 or 18 and you can tell she was born with all this.
And yet - still died a lonely woman. Go figure.
And to the poster upthreads re The Ten Commandments - yes, that is Clint Walker guarding the door and standing behind Brynner in the other photo posted.

by Anonymous | reply 551 | February 3, 2019 5:01 PM |
R551 - Yes, it's one of those "watchable" films that don't need to add up - I think we'd call this one a "guilty pleasure" film. "Watchabililty" of course differs from one person to another - one person's watchability could be another's "Oh, no, not again . . ." But I've always found this film watchable. There are much better films out there that having seen once, I can't bring myself to watch again.
