The Carpenters

Their music was mostly shit.

by Anonymousreply 56January 31, 2019 9:24 PM

As is your opinion, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1January 20, 2019 4:24 PM

Love the Carpenters ‘ music!

by Anonymousreply 2January 20, 2019 4:26 PM

You make me want to throw up, OP.

by Anonymousreply 3January 20, 2019 4:28 PM

Love is surrender.

by Anonymousreply 4January 20, 2019 4:36 PM

Every sha la la la, every whoa oa oa oa , still shines ! All the oldies but goodies !

Every shing a ling a ling that they're starting to sing, so fine !

When they get to the part when he's breaking her heart it can even make me cry.

Just like before, it's yesterday once more.

by Anonymousreply 5January 20, 2019 4:42 PM

Thanks, OP! Listening to the Carpenters right now...

by Anonymousreply 6January 20, 2019 4:45 PM

They were mostly awful, I agree.

Remember THIS travesty?

Answerr: No.

"I have no sympathy for someone thin enough to be buried in pleats"

by Anonymousreply 9January 20, 2019 4:52 PM

They were a mess. The mother was a bathsit crazy control freak, Richard had a Quaalude addiction, and at one point, Karen was taking 80 or 90 laxative pills a day. None of it was supposed to be mentioned because it'd reflect badly on the act.

by Anonymousreply 10January 20, 2019 5:03 PM

Aarrgghh!! It's been 50 years.

There are now Carpenter's Tribute Bands. And a celebration, although "THIS EVENT HAS NOT BEEN ENDORSED BY RICHARD CARPENTER OR UNIVERSAL MUSIC"

I like Close to You. It makes me sad though. Just the music is sad. I think of my mom.

by Anonymousreply 12January 20, 2019 5:06 PM

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft?

ABBA seems like punk rock compared to some of this dreck;

by Anonymousreply 13January 20, 2019 5:57 PM

OP = Bette Midler

by Anonymousreply 14January 20, 2019 6:52 PM

That's some nice trolling there, OP.

by Anonymousreply 15January 20, 2019 7:27 PM

Their music made a lot of people happy. How many people has op made happy?

by Anonymousreply 16January 20, 2019 7:32 PM

Heroin's made a lot of people happy, too.

All the same, I wouldn't recommend it.

by Anonymousreply 17January 20, 2019 7:35 PM

OP, what's mostly shit is what will remain after your deserving encounter with a deadly grease fire. Now go back to the basement and your Motley Crue cds.

by Anonymousreply 18January 20, 2019 7:36 PM

We've Only Just Begun, Rainy Days and Mondays and I Won't Last A Day Without You are not shit.

by Anonymousreply 19January 20, 2019 7:39 PM

Oh please...to pretend that heroin addiction has something g to do with music by the Carpenters? Sounds like something Trump would say...that is really disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 20January 20, 2019 7:39 PM

The Carpenters were in a class of their own - Karen's angelic voice and Richard's gorgeous music production. There's been nobody like them before or since. Timeless music.

by Anonymousreply 21January 20, 2019 7:56 PM

Heard in elevators now, if only very occasionally.^^^

by Anonymousreply 22January 20, 2019 7:57 PM

I love The Carpenters.

by Anonymousreply 23January 20, 2019 7:58 PM

An early photo of The Carpenters. The greatest brother and sister musical duet ever.

I've always imagined Richard to be hung like a horse. Always those mild-mannered ones who surprise us.

by Anonymousreply 26January 20, 2019 8:11 PM

Incest

The big album that started it all for The Carpenters.

OP, when I run across music I don't like, I don't listen to it. You should try that.

by Anonymousreply 29January 21, 2019 4:19 PM

Love the Carpenters. Superstar and Goodbye to Love were probably my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 30January 21, 2019 4:40 PM

I hated the Carpenters when they were popular. Such puky schmaltzy crap. And their shit has definitely not gotten better with time.

by Anonymousreply 31January 21, 2019 4:44 PM

R31 : so sad that you have no taste

by Anonymousreply 32January 21, 2019 4:47 PM

I miss Karen's voice.

by Anonymousreply 33January 21, 2019 4:49 PM

Loved Karen so much, but you have to admit she was fashion-challenged.

by Anonymousreply 34January 21, 2019 5:08 PM

Richard Carpenter and Toni Tennille should go on tour together. Revive each other’s hits.

by Anonymousreply 35January 30, 2019 3:48 AM

You are a Philistine, OP.

by Anonymousreply 36January 30, 2019 3:52 AM

I watched a BBC documentary linked in another thread.

I was surprised how cunty they both seemed, as it is so contrary to their image.

Richards was creepy. And there were stories about how difficult they were on the Carol Burnett show. And how they fired Neil Sedaka because they were jealous of him (let that sink in), and a British interview where Karen is being a bitch and rolling her eyes.

They seemed like a mess.

I suspect the parents were sexually abusing them.

by Anonymousreply 37January 30, 2019 4:00 AM

[quote]Loved Karen so much, but you have to admit she was fashion-challenged.

She could have afforded to lose a few.

by Anonymousreply 38January 30, 2019 4:01 AM

They were big when I was in grade school.

Even then, we knew how uncool they were.

We called them "The Crapping Whores."

by Anonymousreply 39January 30, 2019 4:06 AM

OP is mostly full of 💩💩💩.

by Anonymousreply 40January 30, 2019 4:09 AM

Their music has a depressive quality.

by Anonymousreply 41January 30, 2019 4:10 AM

I 💟 Karen Carpenter.

Whenever I heard that sweet voice sing "Superstar" I used to pretend that she was singing about me.

by Anonymousreply 42January 30, 2019 4:13 AM

R37 they fired Neil Sedaka because he was the opening act and invited Tom Jones on stage from the audience when that’s the main acts job to do the inviting. They were furious at Neil.

by Anonymousreply 43January 30, 2019 4:13 AM

Karen had a beautiful voice, but her brother ruined all their songs.

He was so cheesy, he should have worked on Lawrence Welk.

I'm sorry Karen didn't get to record with people other than Richard Carpenter, the Thomas Kincaid of Arrangements.

by Anonymousreply 44January 30, 2019 4:14 AM

[quote]they fired Neil Sedaka because he was the opening act and invited Tom Jones on stage from the audience when that’s the main acts job to do the inviting. They were furious at Neil.

I heard that there was more to it than that.

Richard was fucked up on drugs (including coke) and Karen was not a great live performer. So they came across as amateurish and unprepared.

Sedaka was a pro and the audience responded to him much better.

The Carpenters got jealous (particularly Richard) and that is why he was let him go.

The Carpenters had a rep for being very difficult then.

by Anonymousreply 45January 30, 2019 4:17 AM

R44, she did a solo record without Richard which the label decided not to release.

by Anonymousreply 46January 30, 2019 4:30 AM

The solo album was finally released in the late 90s and it was pretty blah. There were only a couple of good songs.

by Anonymousreply 47January 30, 2019 4:50 AM

I liked her singing but the arrangements were treacly.

by Anonymousreply 48January 30, 2019 5:21 AM

R45 I saw it in a doc on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 49January 30, 2019 5:31 AM

They were totally uncool back in the day but still they flourished in a time of incredible musical diversity.

Karen's haunting voice was one for the ages.

by Anonymousreply 50January 30, 2019 6:40 AM

[quote]The greatest brother and sister musical duet ever.

Who asked you?

by Anonymousreply 51January 30, 2019 5:46 PM

I never bought one of their records. It was enough to have to hear it on the radio everywhere I went.

by Anonymousreply 52January 30, 2019 6:10 PM

I still love The Carpenters - her voice was one in a billion and his music production and song writing skills were fantastic. Both true professionals.

I loved Karen's voice- a real contralto song stylist- they had a "sound" which they perfected. It seems to have withstood the test of time. Bless the Beasts and the Children is my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 55January 31, 2019 8:08 PM

Of course Karen was a bitch. She was hangry all the time.
