I was born in the early 1980s -- I definitely remember this from my childhood.
God, yes, to match the bathroom suite.
I remember green and yellow.

Sometime around the '80s, colored toilet paper began to disappear from the shelves. Toilet Paper World quotes someone called the Toilet Paper King on a few potential reasons for its decline. (The Toilet Paper King, apparently, is Kenn Fischburg, president of Toilet Paper World. It is unclear where the authority for this toilet paper monarchy derives from, or whether the title is self-assigned.) Apparently doctors began warning people that the dyes in colored toilet paper could be harmful to their skin. And there were environmental concerns about the dyes, too.

pink toilet paper is still a very big thing in France.

I was just thinking about this yesterday, while buying toilet paper. Not that I miss the colors, mind.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 18, 2019 4:00 PM |
Tissues too. We had Rainbow Scotties and you'd get a different color each time.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 18, 2019 4:03 PM |
They don't make it anymore? I guess I never noticed since I always get the cheapest. No patterns anymore, either?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 18, 2019 4:04 PM |
I would buy that, r7.

I remember pink - to match my parent's bath and loo.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 18, 2019 4:05 PM |
Haha I remember. It was still around in the 90s also. The store by us would sell regular, blue, yellow, green and pink. I always intentionally bought the pink or blue lmao.

My anal sphincter is color blind so it's all moot.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 18, 2019 4:11 PM |
I remember pink in my parent's bathroom in the '60s, but I don't think it was very popular in the '70s and beyond -- its decline kind of correlated with the interest in ecology and environmentalism, in my mind.

I loved colored toilet paper and used to buy it. Wish they'd bring it back!

Pink, hanging just right, and ready to roll.

Amy Sedaris' absurd apartment profiled in a Tasteful Friends thread recently featured bright pink paper towels for her kitchen. she said they come from UK and are a gift from David who lives in England now.

I miss the green Scott toilet paper and matching tissues.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 18, 2019 5:30 PM |
I remember the pink and blue ones Charmin and Quilted Northern used to make xD!
I also remember my elementary teachers being so particular about Kleenes . One insisted that the Klennex box must match the holiday xD
August and September were white
January was the only Blue month
Pink for Valentine's - Easter
Green from Spring until the end of the Semester
Gold for Autumn - Xmas

I worked in a grocery store from the late 70s to the late 80s and I remember the colors well. I miss them!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 18, 2019 5:42 PM |
I remember the dyed and scented toilet paper, mainly because a great uncle of mine contracted colon cancer back in the 60's and died. The doctors said it was highly likely it came from the dyed and scented tissue. People started dropping like flies at one point and that's the main reason it was removed from the shelves.

I remembered tp with designs. We had white with pink flowers in one of our bathrooms. Something like this

My nana in the UK had something like this in her bathroom. As a kid I thought it was hilarious. I envied friends who had pink Andrex loo rolls though, that was much poshervthsn out scratchy no name white bog roll. As an adult I'm also cheap about it now though, single ply Scotts for us.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 18, 2019 9:05 PM |
My grandmother used to have pink & blue toilet paper, which I thought at the time was very fancy - unlike my cheapo parents that would only buy the white kind!

It hasn't been the same since Sears discontinued their catalog.

Dye in TP can give women UTIs.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 19, 2019 6:01 AM |
I remember colored paper towels.
But if it's the dye....don't they also have to dye the paper white? Dye is dye and ink is ink, so wouldn't white toilet paper and paper towels be just as harmful?

Oprah wipes her arse and vajayjay with freshly minted bank notes that her butler gets from the bank every morning. She wipes away laughing manically, throwing the soiled notes in the air for her Haitian maids to catch. Oprah then calls to be sat on her bidet and her footmen carry her and seat her over Gayle's mouth from whence she will be licked clean.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 19, 2019 7:33 AM |
I remember those R45. I think there were different ethnic kids for each color and type of TP.
I feel like colored tissues lasted a lot longer (maybe still around?) than the TP.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 19, 2019 10:08 AM |
That's why we stopped using it, r3. I remember mom watching a news show piece on how the dyes were unhealthy. For a while she was frustrated because all the TP was dyed, and having to settle for white with small dyed flowers on it. After a few years all you could get was white, though -- the dyed TP fad ended really quickly.

In the early 80s one of my aunts got some kind of ass rash or worse, and her doctor told her to stop wiping with colored toilet paper. She healed and started to spread the word, and soon my mom and all my other aunts had switched to the less decorative white paper that was perfectly safe for wiping all family asses, large and small. I always thought it would make an inspiring made-for-TV movie, kind of like "Lois Gibbs and the Love Canal".

This thread just triggered a memory. In the early 70's my older sister's wedding party had decorated their cars with big pastel flowers made from colored Kleenex. There was actually a flower-making party and all the bridesmaids giggled and drank and made dozens upon dozens of the car pompoms.
Oh, God. I'm from trash, aren't I?

R44, white paper isn't dyed white, it's bleached.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 19, 2019 4:31 PM |
The dyes interacted negatively with sewage systems, specific septic - causing backups. That’s what led to the disappearance. A few backyard boom booms and *splat*. Nobody wants their brand associated with an exploding poop factory in a suburban back yard.

Of course in France, dyed toilet paper turned into a haute-couture business. There were even boutiques specialized in toilet paper only.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 19, 2019 11:29 PM |
It was tacky and I miss it.
Didn't they also use to make Dove soap in different colors to match the bathroom decor?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 19, 2019 11:41 PM |
I order the Renova paper towels from Amazon. They are shipped from Canada. The shipping is very expensive, but I will make the sacrifice for the colors. I refuse now to use boring plain white paper towels.

Any tips on how to make absolutely sure the “exploding poop factory” happens? Asking for a friend.
