I can’t stand Bradley either. I was so happy when he had a string of flops then we stopped hearing about him. Now he’s back and more obnoxious than ever.

R5 Has DL talked about Omar Sharif Jr before? His Instagram is very gay. I couldn't find a thread, but DL's search feature sucks.
Here he is on the far left comparing his abs with those of the other men in the picture, including Terry Miller, Dan Savage's husband, second from right.

Rami Maleks victory made me so happy.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 7, 2019 6:25 AM |
Lol @ poster at the end of the previous thread called the HWFP 93 illegals. This shit has to stop even as a joke. As a legal immigrant it makes my life worse every day as anti immigrant sentiment grows and Americans are clueless about their own immigration laws. I’ve had “Go Home” spray painted on my garage door and clients have refused to deal with me on the phone when they hear my accent. People with names like Rodriquez and O’Brien won’t deal with an immigrant. Major fucking eye roll. My company is now paying for me and two Australian employees to take voice lessons to lose our accents so we can avoid abuse and the company doesn’t lose out on sales.
/off my soapbox.
Now that Fashion Police is gone, is there any show that dissects the red carpet fashion?

R9, I think we've talked about Sharif a few times over the years, yes.
And Sharif has been openly gay for years, so yes his IG is very gay. ; )
He also follows DL fave Julian Morris (& his boyfriend Landon Ross).

Rami is very cute and sweet and humble. He deserves all this. It’s a shame the ASIB and Gaga fans will make him miserable on social media for this win.

Cuaron makes a good point in answer to the reporter's question about Roma having a simultaneous Netflix and theatrical release. He asks what kind of theatrical release alone the reporter thinks a black and white foreign film with no big stars would get. If Roma goes on to win some more awards, it might actually open up the awards to less big Hollywood, flashy, big name films because they'll find a streaming platform at the same time as their theatrical release and actually be seen by people. It would be ironic if streaming actually saved the film industry from itself. I think streaming music is saving the music industry, even after they fought it with everything they could.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 7, 2019 6:42 AM |
Issue is Roma wasn’t really that good and was boring. And I like slow films but that was dull and slow.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 7, 2019 6:44 AM |
Rami is the Timothee of 2019 here. Another mediocre faced twink bottom. When he’s strung out on drugs Rami might throw a mean fuck and he sure has the chin to look determined to make you come.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 7, 2019 6:44 AM |
Queen is thought of much more highly abroad than in the US, so it does not surprise me the HFP would give "Bohemian Rhapsody" best Picture. There's not a chance in hell, though, it will win for the Oscars: Best Picture will go to Roma, A Star is Born, The Favourite, Black Panther, or Green Book first.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 7, 2019 6:46 AM |
Rami Malek is 37. On what planet is a 37-year-old a twink?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 7, 2019 6:47 AM |
Did The Favourite not do as well as it was supposed to tonight?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 7, 2019 6:48 AM |
Perhaps there is a fear that one day a film will get streamed on Netflix first, then play a brief theatrical release just to qualify for Oscar nominations, which will make people feel like Oscars are now being awarded to glorified TV movies. Not saying that's the case with "Roma," just saying maybe that was the gist of the concern being raised by the reporter.

R28 I watched Mrs. Maisel. I didn't find it appealing, cute but ultimately underwhelming. However, Alex Borstein is fantastic, to the point of it being worth suffering through the show just to see her. I would watch it again just for her. Sad she didn't win this evening. Didn't ever see Clarkson though so can't make a true comparison

I am speaking to someone on Twitter that is a critic and Predicts award noms and wins etc. and he knows some people in the industry and he said ASIB was the front runner for the GG for a while until word changed to BR cause the voters felt “BR is too loved by the people to deny it”. Hence it’s winning. They gave it to BR, not cause they felt it was the best, but because they felt it was the most loved by people besides Black Panther but BP wasn’t getting the win.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 7, 2019 8:03 AM |
He said the chances of BR winning Best Picture at the Oscars is slim, Malek has a shot though and is easily Top 2 in voting right now for the nomination. He’s locked for a nod. Feels Hawke still has a chance to sneak in and knock someone out cause Hawkes performance hasn’t been forgotten by everyone.
He personally feels Malek should get bumped out and Hawke take the 5th spot, but since Malek is not the “5th” spot and definitely Top 2, someone else may get replaced but most likely Hawke won’t get nominated

Thank god you said this! I was starting to think I'm the only one who felt that way. It's not a great movie, and ten years from now, no one will be talking about this film. I was highly anticipating for the release of this film since I like black-and-white foreign films, but Bicycle Thieves or Rome, Open City this ain't! By filming Roma in a cold, clinical style, Cuarón made me care very little about the characters, story or the themes of the film.
Alfonso Cuarón's best film will always be Y Tu Mamá También

by Anonymous | reply 103 | January 7, 2019 9:52 AM |
R103 insiders say Close is looking good and Malek is top 2 as of now. But let’s see if things change over the next few weeks.
But the Oscar is between Malek and Cooper as of now.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 7, 2019 9:56 AM |
The real reason Cooper was shut out was because he was wearing a white jacket with white pants. Pants should have been black.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | January 7, 2019 9:57 AM |
R105 ASIB won song. It wasn’t completely shut out.
The reason the film lost was because voters said you can’t deny how loved the film is by the public, so they gave the more loved film the win over the more critically acclaimed ASIB.
They gave it to Malek cause they felt he was a stand out over Cooper the Live Aid sequence sealed the deal and showed the dedication and work he put in.

Gaga has a lot of OLD Hollywood in her corner. She's sucked up Tony Bennett, Julie Andrews and the list goes on. She didn't do these things by accident. The Oscar could still flip back to her. Glenn winning GG could be seen as the Lifetime Achievement Award. Gaga still has hope.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | January 7, 2019 10:05 AM |

The SAGs will tell us more of where things will go. The SAGs are USUALLY better at predicting the Oscar winner than the GG, who tend to do their own thing. We shall see.
I think they will give Cooper the SAG over Malek. Cooper has more pull with his peers than Malek does.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | January 7, 2019 10:13 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 129 | January 7, 2019 2:06 PM |
I think there's some things people need to remember: having BR and ASIB in Drama left a clear pathway for Green Book to triumph as Best Film - Comedy. There will be no such distinction at the Oscars.
The GGs have definitely put Glenn Close in the frame to win the Oscar - she better just hope that voters don't watch her boring film. The smooch from Douglas was a great reminder of her triumphant past and, though I found her speech kind of cringy ("Category Sisters"? Presuming she will see them all a lot more....where? At the CC awards? SAGs? O.K.), it was refreshing to see someone of her stature so genuinely surprised to have won something. She doesn't have the gravitas of Streep but it was a good showing - and that's primarily what the GGs are about: auditioning to win better, bigger awards. She's looking a bit "presidential" now.
However, I wouldn't rule out Olivia Colman who is not only terrific as Queen Anne but the whole film is structured and edited to make her every appearance an absolute knockout. Like I said, Close had better hope voters don't actually watch The Wife. (Was it actually a whole novel? I thought it was short story.)
Emily Blunt looked like she lost the ability to fly at the GGs. She really looked like the wind had been knocked out of her. Probably the realisation that now she'll have to consider starring in A Quiet Place 2: Where Things Get Even More Quiet. It's going to be set at the GGs, right after Olivia Colman's name was announced. I'd say at least she still gets to fuck her husband but...he's gay, isn't he?
by Anonymous | reply 130 | January 7, 2019 3:25 PM |
Also, Bradley Cooper has Robert DeNiro and Clint Eastwood firmly on his side - probably others. The Academy establishment will no doubt be supporting him on the night. Whether that outweighs the new Academy voters, remains to be seen. But I think the ASIB awards circuit restraint has a lot to do with observers considering it a lock on THE NIGHT. Not for Gaga but certainly for Cooper. There is probably an assumption that everyone else will be voting for it so they'll cast a vote for something else. I would think the snub at the GGs would make the films supporters really lock down the votes now to bring home some wins.
I don't think BR has a chance at Best Picture and I would suspect Rami Malek will not take home an Oscar. However, I have to hand it to little Mr. Malek whom I have previously not been much of a fan - I LOVE his red carpet/ballroom efforts to meet Gaga, Kidman and gawd knows who else. R139 The Metro article wouldn’t link:
[quote]Ben Whishaw was named as a replacement in December 2013. However, he was never given a contract and there was no official confirmation he would be stepping into the role. Brian May had said he hoped the James Bond actor would sign up for the role, dubbing him a ‘real actor’. But in 2014, despite Ben still being linked to the lead, things surrounding the film were up in the air, and he ended up telling Time Out: ‘I don’t know what’s happening, it seems to be on a back burner.’

How tiresome it would be to see the 3rd remake of ASIB win anything at all. The movie has been made 4 times! Cooper and Gaga only had to fill already well made shoes for their roles, and end up just playing themselves, letting the vehicle carry them.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | January 7, 2019 4:35 PM |
It's obvious that Bradley and Gaga don't like each other. They can barely look at each other without sneering. She seems to be chummy with her music team from ASIB, but cold with Cooper and Sam Elliott.
We saw the way she shoved DiCaprio on live TV, and she's rumored to have a bad temper off-camera. That shove wasn't forgotten.

Not boring in the slightest, always holds your attention while telling an honest story. Ali gave such a powerful performance. You could feel his anxiety, his internal pain and the haunting of it all. Fantastic performance.
I loved that this film acknowledged how WASPs looked down upon Italian Americans cause that’s the reality of it all. And the ratings are gonna be low for all awards shows. People don’t watch them the way they do. They rather watch the clips of specific people winning on YouTube.

I recently got into a heated argument with someone over MYSTIC PIZZA, of all movies. He could see that Adam Storke's WASPy rich family were looking down on Julia Roberts' character for being working class, but he didn't believe me when I added that they also disapproved of the coupling because Julia was of Portuguese descent. In other words, not really white -- or as we like to say on DL, 'white-adjacent.' To him (white), they were all white and I was just needlessly bringing race into the equation. I had to explain that there was a time in the US, even a recently as the 1980s, when Italian-Americans, Portuguese-Americans, and Greek-Americans were not considered white by Anglos. The WASP family even made derogatory remarks about her ethnicity, for God's sake!

I can show you one argument I got into with an Italian man about it a few months ago and he swears “Italians were always treated exactly the same as other whites with the same exact opportunities”. That’s NOT TRUE. There’s a reason so many Italians had to have their own neighborhoods in run down areas, like the Hispanics and blacks.
There are even books by white men in the 1800s and early 1900s trashing Italians. Look into it. They were HATED but Italians today don’t believe it.

Italians have made themselves feel better about themselves by putting other minorities down. They were seen as minorities once upon a time. Once they were accepted as “white” they jumped on that bandwagon fast and haven’t left.
Only Italians are NOTHING like WASPs culturally. In a lot of parts in the Midwest and south Italian food is still seen as “ethnic” dishes aka Italians are ethnic. They just refuse to accept that.

In late 19th-century America, there was a growing prejudice against Italians, although they were recruited to satisfy the demand for cheap labor. They were immigrating to the American South, particularly Florida and Louisiana, in large numbers because of poor conditions at home and to fill the shortage of cheap labor created by the end of slavery and the preference of freedmen to work on their own accounts as sharecroppers.
Sugar planters, in particular, sought workers who were more compliant than former slaves; they hired immigrant recruiters to bring Italians to southern Louisiana. In the 1890s, thousands of Italians were arriving in New Orleans each year. Many settled in the French Quarter, which by the early 20th century became known as "Little Sicily."[4]
In a letter responding to an inquiry about immigration in New Orleans, Mayor Joseph A. Shakspeare expressed the common anti-Italian prejudice, complaining that the city had become attractive to "...the worst classes of Europe: Southern Italians and Sicilians...the most idle, vicious, and worthless people among us." He claimed they were "filthy in their persons and homes" and blamed them for the spread of disease, concluding that they were "without courage, honor, truth, pride, religion, or any quality that goes to make a good citizen."[4]

Who makes up this kind of shit in their heads?! Wtf.
And don’t get me started on the hot Mexican guy I was talking to from TX literally obsessed with white men to the point he wants to move to Orlando or San Diego cause their gay population is mostly white guys. He makes sure his skin always looks super fair with chemicals, lips pink and wants to bleach his asshole so it’s pink like a white guys.
Talk about self hatred. When I called him out on it (I’m a brown skinned mixed Hispanic) he got upset and always said it’s not that deep. DUDE YOU LIGHTEN YOUR SKIN AND EVERYTHING IS WHITE WHITE WHITE. How is it not that deep? I’m shocked he even liked me. He eventually cut me off cause of me calling him out.
His brown skinned Hispanic ex told me after that they broke up cause he too hated how White obsessed he was and he personally felt he was self hating and a bit racist toward blacks and his own. Said he’s been like that since young.
That is so sad to me.

by Anonymous | reply 254 | January 8, 2019 10:55 AM |
I didn't watch the show because I had only seen a couple of the films and don't have the premium cable channels to watch the television nominees. Compound this with the desire to avoid hearing political statements or " Let's hear it for the women" - type speeches. Sorry. The award shows have ceased to be a draw.

You can predict who is going to win based on the applause they get when their name is announced. Gaga got a smattering of applause. Close's applause was thunderous. Close or Coleman will win. Gaga will be lucky to be nominated. I think people realized over time that ASIB , while good, was over-hyped out of he gate. Once the buzz stopped and viewers didn't have journalists and influencers going on about how amazing ASIB was, people saw the film for what it was. There's nothing special about it and Gaga is playing herself.

r252 That is such bullshit. So some Italians came to America - as white people. Then they were not awarded "privilege" by the people already there, so now the entire country has to accept they are not white, against anything they ever believed and can see with their own eyes?

Hate away, r257. I remember watching some trashy talk show back in the 90s, probably Jerry Springer. A black family was on the show, including the mother and some of her adult children. Issue: who's the father? Was he white? The mother proclaimed no, that she had never gone out with a white guy. Her children responded with what about SoAndSo? Mother responded that he's not white, he's Italian.
Wherever this crap came from or who started it, it didn't start on Datalounge.

They weren't white but this doesn't mean they were black. Read the book when the irish became white.
It's complicated but remember, race is a social construct, it didn't always exist and people went by ethnicity/tribe, like germanic, wasps, mestizo, roman anglo...

If some idiot Americans decided in the 20th century that Italians aren't white, it doesn't make it so. You also don't say black people don't have a soul, they are at least not considered to have a soul, because the KKK said so. A dumb opinion is just that. Italians consider themselves white (majority, native Italians, you know what I mean). The entirety of Europe considers Italians as white as anyone and has done so long before America was "discovered". No Jerry Springer show can change that.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Brian May wanted a different actor to play Freddie Mercury

Roger Taylor was also very impressed by Whishaw's work in Richard II

from 2015 interview
As for the Freddie Mercury biopic, in which Whishaw was supposed to have played the late Queen frontman after the originally mooted Sacha Baron Cohen left the project citing “artistic differences”, that seems to have gone into development hell. “I don’t know. I truly don’t know. I’ve got no news about it,” says Whishaw. “There’s no script as we stand and no director and therefore no film, so we’ll see.”
Whishaw did a screen test for the part two years ago, in which he sang “Bohemian Rhapsody”. I’m impressed, I tell him. “I don’t have a great voice but I do have quite a big range apparently” –

Awkward transition:
[quote]Sam Elliott: [Lady Gaga] was stunning to work with. There was a moment where we all were at the Greek Theatre. I wasn’t there for many of the live venues that we did. But we were there at the Greek Theatre. It was all her little monsters, her fan base that follows her so religiously … they were the extras in the crowd. There was a moment late at night. We’d been there a long time, where everybody was kind of restless. We’d shot through the day, and they’d been in the sun all day. Now it was kind of turning cold. And she just came out of nowhere and sat down at the piano and started singing. It just rocked the place. Everybody just pretty much stopped. The crew stopped. Magical.

Enough with pretending Cohen is a legitimate ACTOR. And his version would have FLOPPED and not gotten award recognition. Cohen is all about shock value and controversy yet you all act like he is some amazing thespian. Malek can act circles around Cohen.
As a matter of fact I bet if Cohen stayed on he would not be getting nominations.
I see this weird thought process that if one actor gets nominations for a role that means the original actor would have. No. Cohen would not have given the performance Malek did, which was ELECTRIFYING like no other performance this past year.
His Live Aide sequence would have been a joke too.

Malek was very overrated, IMO. His performance was all artifice and overbite. I can't guarantee that Cohen would have been better, but the fact that he left the project because the Queen Machine didn't really want to explore the nitty gritty of Freddie tells me the film might have been a lot more interesting than the bland pap that we wound up with. And Cohen is very talented, and seemed to be committed in the way that said he would have dug in his heels and really given us a memorable Freddie. The Bohemian Rhapsody that's on screen now is so dreadful that yes, had Cohen played it as written, it wouldn't have been very good because I don't think he would have bought into it. Malek just did what he was told, and the performance is all surface because the script and direction are all surface. It's a shockingly awful film, one of the worst of the year.

The nitty grityy SBC wanted were tabloid rumors and drug and sex parties, not wholly uninteresting, but way less interesting and special than what made Queen such a great band and Mercury such a legendary frontman. And such a project would have never ever gotten the music rights, so it's a moot point.

There will always be the lifetime achievement win. Eddie Murphy deserved the Oscar for "Dreamgirls" and "Little Miss Sunshine" Alan Arkin won for simply showing up and knowing his lines. He did nothing of merit in that film but was on his fourth nomination.
by Anonymous | reply 353 | January 9, 2019 12:31 PM |
Growing up, I knew and liked Queen's songs especially from Flash Gordon which I loved back then. Freddie Mercury was also one of the first people I knew about who was gay. But aside from a few facts, I didn't know much about his or the bands real life. I saw BR and enjoyed it but like a lot of people I was disturbed by how Freddie being gay was down played but I wasn't completely surprised. What really bothered me was reading after how almost the entire movie is a lie from how they met all the way up to the "reunion" at Live Aid. Plus to find out they completely changed the relationship he had with his long time partner was disgusting. I know all bio pics change somethings but you could actually make another movie about the real Freddie and except for the songs, it would be completely different.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | January 9, 2019 12:39 PM |
BR is a very watchable but very flawed film. It doesn't deserve to win any awards - its rewards are the huge worldwide box office result.
by Anonymous | reply 355 | January 9, 2019 12:49 PM |
BR is not a lie, it's an adaptation of real life. This conflict and kiss and make up dynamics in the band existed (Paul Pretner being a huge problem) they were just not tied to Life Aid, but at random uninteresting times. That's doesn't make it a lie.
Completely changed the relationship with Jim Hutton... because they met after a party and not in a bar? What? No. They summed up the relationship pretty well. Jim was this proud and unstarfucky working class dude Freddie just fell for, pursued and then settled down with - and the also employed btw. What kind of information are you reading?
by Anonymous | reply 356 | January 9, 2019 1:05 PM |
Another thing re Jim Hutton: The first time he saw Queen live was backstage at Live Aid, I'm pretty sure, and according to him he just thought "That's my man". They included that interview information in the movie. It was very truthful and the sciptwriter should get way more credit!
by Anonymous | reply 357 | January 9, 2019 1:23 PM |
Lmaoooo @ they changed Jim and Freddie’s relationship. Complete bullshit. They changed how they met and nothing else. And a lot of what was in it Happened just not in that order or it was dramatized for movie purposes (Freddie quitting the band) but that doesn’t mean the entire movie was lying.
And the gay aspect wasn’t downplayed. We see he’s gay early on and from then on he was gay!
by Anonymous | reply 358 | January 9, 2019 1:35 PM |
He meets this guy cater waiting a party, hits on him then years later look him up in the phone book and takes him to Live Aid. That's summering up their relationship ? They were together for years, he took care of him while he was suffering. You see none of that. Since they were playing fast and loose with the facts, they certainly could have had them get together earlier to show more of this important relationship. But they didn't.
by Anonymous | reply 359 | January 9, 2019 1:45 PM |
R359 you see NONE OF THAT because they didn’t show anything that happened after Live Aide. They intentionally didn’t show his suffering and dying. They wanted the film to be a CELEBRATION of Mercury, which they achieved.
FOX is considering making a sequel where we see Freddie’s life POST Live Aide.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | January 9, 2019 1:48 PM |
Eh, and between the phone book and Live Aid they become a couple and have a big movie kiss. Yes, that is very truthful. On a meta level it makes it part of the happy ending, you can't have that at any time in a movie. The movie ended 1985 as r360 said. It didn't have to, but it makes sense it did. It certainly makes FM more of a rock god than an AIDS victim and, as I said, gives the film a happy ending.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | January 9, 2019 1:56 PM |
R361 that’s what they wanted. To celebrate Freddie. Not make him a victim or a pervert who got what he had coming for sleeping around and shooting up etc.
They made it where you loved him and that’s that.
by Anonymous | reply 362 | January 9, 2019 1:59 PM |
Most biopics condense/conflate timelines and omit certain people or utilize composite characters for time purposes. Doesn't make them 'untrue.' They're still factual, because many of the things did happen, but perhaps not in the way portrayed in films. It's called dramatic license. I've noticed that many people today consider a biopic a lie if it doesn't include every aspect of a person's life in chronological order or exactly as it happened.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | January 9, 2019 2:09 PM |
It's not just the Jim Hutton thing that they got wrong (and that's not such a big deal because of where they ended the movie), but they got multiple recording timelines wrong, from Fat Bottomed Girls to the most egregious, the whole bullshit sequence of We Will Rock You, from how it came about to claiming it was recorded in 1981. The entire Mike Myers scene never happened, from the fact that the label actually was supportive of the song to the fact that no one even approximating Myers' character ever existed. If they wanted to write a scene around creating drama about the concern that BR the song was a tough sell, there could have been better ways to do it (even though the entire sequence was unnecessary considering there really was nothing at risk for them releasing the song as a single). It wasn't even needed since the recording of the single was enough to show how difficult it was (and was the only scene in the film (for me) that ever came to life. By the time they got to Live Aid, the fact that the reunion was so full of shit killed any sense of admiration at how they reproduced the concert. And also, by then we'd seen Malek lipsync enough that the effect had worn off and it was just another tedious bit watching him try and navigate his false choppers.
by Anonymous | reply 364 | January 9, 2019 2:13 PM |
Good Grief 1) The did not get Jim Hutton wrong. At all. 2) Several people explained to you why "the timelines are wrong". How someone can be so clueless about how movies are written and what they are, escapes me. 3) Why on earth do you care when "We will rock you" was written? You got incredibly candid information about how and why it was written pretty straight from the writer Brian May himself, as you know he held everyone involved in the film a 3 hour lecture about it minimum. You want more authenticity than that? You gotta stick to documentaries, though not all of them will deliver that either.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | January 9, 2019 3:58 PM |

R365 It's okay gentle flower. We know you love the movie. Doesn't mean everyone has to. Just because others are bothered by the many inaccuracies doesn't mean you have to be, it's called an opinion. You are okay with the fact that they spent so little time actually exploring the homosexual side of a gay icon, that's fine. Others are not. If you notice, the posters who have problems with the film, simply state their case without attack. You however can't do the same.

It's better than most best pictures. I can't get over that extremely mediocre Ben Affleck movie that won, the name always escapes me. Argo? And then the media had the audacity to pretend Affleck was snubbed for best director ... Does anyone still remember Spotlight? I assume it was probably alright, but BEST film of a whole year, I doubt it. Mostly forgettable middle brow Oscar bait sweeps.
BR would be something special and memorable for a change, not to mention something gay in a positive way. 100% rooting for it!

"Spotlight" might be the worst Best Picture winner in my lifetime. Rachel McAdams rattling off lines as fast as she could so she'd sound smart, Ruffalo doing his cliche blow up "We can't let them get away with this!", Keaton wasted., and, worst of all, more Catholic priests diddling boys and presented as unapologetically gloating about getting away with it. Great for the gay community, so damn tired.
Fuck off, R377, Oprah just came out encouraging voters to award it Best Picture. You are on some sad alternative planet.

Ruffalo was simply *awful* in SPOTLIGHT. Doing his angry man thing which was an exact repeat of his performance in THE NORMAL HEART. I'm gobsmacked that he received an Oscar nomination for that performance.
I do have to say though that I'm glad it beat THE REVENANT that year.

Agreed. And giving McAdams an Oscar nod for hooking her hair behind one ear the whole movie was also baffling. I don't think she even spoke in it. Best they could find.

You are seriously out of touch, R381, and must not be in the business. Oprah's appeal has led to much discussion and not just on DL. It wasn't just a blip. It's played out as the perfect antidote to fixing the OscarSoWhite mess. I'd say "Black Panther" was the front-runner as a result -- until the Globes put "Rhapsody" in the lead.
by Anonymous | reply 384 | January 9, 2019 9:46 PM |
Of the 24 "experts" that contribute to gold derby, only 2 were predicting a Black Panther win. I dont see that as a front runner, but whatever, this will lead nowhere.

R325 Just because Cohen's a comedian doesn't mean that he can't be a good actor.
Robin Williams won an Oscar and a SAG award for "Good Will Hunting". He also won Golden Globes for "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "The Fisher King". Jim Carrey gave sensitive performances in the TV show, "The Duck Factory" and the film, "The Truman Show".
Cohen also claimed to be bisexual back in 2016, stating that he's 23% gay but he could have been joking. This could explain why he looks comfortable playing a gay character in "Talladega Nights".
He also had great charisma and screen presence in "Talladega Nights".

r394 The worries are about what kind of comedian SBC is. He does mean spirited minstrel shows, basically. Robin Williams was never that and always seen as a great funny/serious actor. Decades before Good Will Hunting.
We will never know how his Freddie Mercury would have turned out. Judging by his comments about wild stories and his attacks on Brian May (like who the fuck is he? Yes, you may believe that I'm a Queen fan), I think we dodged a bullet. Also judging by Maleks and BR's success both with the public and the awards, I doubt what we have was not close to the best outcome possible.

R428 I don't know about the veracity of these stories, but there are young people who had never heard of Queen/Freddy and have discovered them/him via BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY or have learned more about them/him via the film.
I was a sixth grader when WAYNE'S WORLD came out in early '.92. That's when I and many of my friends/classmates first heard "Bohemian Rhapsody." We then learned that Freddy had just died a few months earlier. I don't recall if we learned he was gay then. Probably not, since I think that's something I would have latched onto as a gayling myself. Plus, Ryan White had died a year or so before, which was national news, and Magic Johnson had also recently announced he had HIV, and they were not known/reported to be gay. So, having HIV/AIDS didn't automatically make you gay. We were being taught that it could affect anyone so be careful and use protection.
