I think he addressed this in his autobiography. Said people always think he's gay, but no, he's just a straight guy who gives off that vibe. Who knows?

Everyone seems to think Duckie in Pretty in Pink is gay, but if you watch it there's nothing really specific to suggest he is, he's just really annoying. The reason he comes off as gay is because of the way Cryer plays him.

He performs the Tony Randall function, he automatically makes his closeted gay co-star seem straight by comparison.

I used to see him around the UWS in Manhattan. We knew the same people around the same time. He was very nice and came from a very nice middle class, liberal , Jewish family. He's not gay, but at Bronx Science there was a surprising number of straight brainy outcast male nerdy / geeky classmates who found a place to fit in with the drama club. They really seemed to want attention and approval. Jon Cryer isn't gay.

Bronx Science (from what I remember usually had four or five plays / musicals every year. Lots of us became scientists and engineers, but there were was a significant number of straight guys who loved the attention they received overacting and mugging and getting the spotlight on stage.

For me, Ducky was in the closet and his friend knew even before him, that's why she friendzoned him. I see why Andrew McCarthy was the type of guy a teen find attactive, cute and not threatening. Young girls fantasize with holding hands and kissing, not get fucked all night by a squared jaw stud.
