I'm wrapping Christmas gifts (always use cheap paper), drinking, and listening to '80s music. How about you West End girls?
It's Christmas Eve Eve, bitches, what in the hell are you doing?

On the presents I wrap for myself!!!!

R1, I used to buy expensive Caspari paper but it's so thick it doesn't bend well and doesn't create a crisp crease when folded. It's been Dollar Store paper ever since. But I admire your aesthetics.

When we were boys, my brothers and I created our own mini-holiday for Dec 23 that younger brother dubbed “Maluba Day.”
We used it as an excuse to exchange presents with each other early and play games.
Now, we observe it by eating spicy food and having tropical drinks - and still playing games.
It’s much more fun n than Christmas.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 23, 2018 7:16 PM |

R10, I am so very sorry for your loss of your father.
But I agree with the DL’er who said that your father would want you to be as happy as you possibly can this holiday. If he was suffering, then take comfort in knowing he is not suffering any longer. And he is likely in a better place than we all are [ hopefully, it’s a Trump-free place : ) ].
Think about what a gift you had in his being in your life for as long as he was, and how fortunate you are to have what must have been a good father, since you miss him so much. You still have memories. I hope they make you smile and laugh, too.
I pray he is at peace, and you find peace, too. I love you!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 23, 2018 8:09 PM |
This is such a weird holiday because of this whole Monday/Tuesday thing. Tonight feels like Christmas Eve to me! I am tempted to open all of my presents NOW!
As I have gotten older I enjoy December 26th through December 31st MORE than the time leading up to Christmas.
This goddamned OP with the Christmas Eve Eve shit made me wonder if it was actually Christmas Eve!
And this Papyrus paper folds beautifully, bitch. That Dollar store shit RIPS and tears as you are wrapping your gifts!!
I have a pair of Gucci Sneakers I bought myself that I want to rip open but I will probably wait until December 26th or so.
Invest in good wrapping paper, OP.
My tree and presents are out of Architectural Digest, bitches!!!!!

R23- WTF??? And yes, I am semi bombed and have my homemade lasagna heating in the oven and simply do not want to ruin this glorious buzz with food.
If I knew where OP lived, I would barge into this cunts house, RIP That shitty paper off of her cunting gifts, and personally re-wrap each one while reading her to filth! To FILTH! and FOR FILTH!
Shame on you, OP! Shame!

Sad, lonely R21, clinging to his delusional belief that Papyrus paper wraps well. Dream on, my little friend, with your tacky Gucci sneakers and your dreams of grandeur. Frolic away in your empty head and while you're at it, have some more wine.

R39- It was like that line in A Bell Jar where she says (and I am mangling the line if not making one up completely)- The pine bows and holly promised something that never came to pass. All of this build up and it always feels a little empty. Now once 12/26 hits, all expectations are GONE but it is still "the holidays" then the real fun begins.
I truly believe in the 12 days of Christmas.
And here's a link to my sneakers. I purchased them because they look OLD!, R40!

Mine are the green/red ones!!!
It is my favorite line from any book, ever, because someone said something so perfectly that I have always felt that I could never put into words.
And my quote is badly mangled.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 23, 2018 8:59 PM |
Here we are. And I decimated it.
I felt overstuffed and dull and disappointed, the way I always do the day after Christmas, as if whatever it was the pine boughs and the candles and the silver and gilt-ribboned presents and the birch-log fires and the Christmas turkey and the carols at the piano promised never came to pass.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 23, 2018 9:07 PM |

I bet he's quite the handsome daddy.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 23, 2018 9:56 PM |
Her over-enunciation is a little distracting at first, but I got used to it after a while.
The YMRT Manson series is a sprawling, 12-part, fantastic series. I never realized just how plugged in old Charlie was to the Hollywood scene, perhaps because a lot of that got covered up after the murders. For instance, he and Terry Melcher were much closer than Melcher later wanted to admit, to the point that Melcher used to go hang out at Spahn Ranch, particularly since he liked fucking barely-legal Manson girl Ruth Ann Moorehouse (Ouisch).

OP, I panicked this morning when I saw your post, I thought it was Christmas Eve. I'm still in my PJs but need to get dressed and hit Costco. Then off to the grocery store.
Tomorrow will be cleaning, setting up tables, chairs and prepping food. Then an hours drive to a friend's house for dinner.
Christmas Day we will host dinner for friends, there will be about 12 of us.

Having the annual, depressing fight with the SO. Every very damn year it's another drama. I do believe I'm done with the trauma being recycled and can't handle this anymore. 12 years is enough.
I LOVE Christmas, but not with this one. Pray for me (if you're a believer) and curse my stupidity for trying again.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 23, 2018 10:25 PM |
Trying to cope with insomnia, basically. I haven't slept more than a few hours for the last few nights, which is weird because I don't celebrate Christmas so there's not really any stress. I think maybe it's the upcoming surgery I have right after the first of the year, but it's minor.
Going to our favorite local Mexican place in a couple of hours, then getting some carryout to have on Christmas Day since everything will be closed. Might go get some nog after.

Christmas in Connecticut - feels like it will never come - had a party for 26 Friday night, attended another party last night and now just preparing for the next two days - sister and family coming and staying overnight. Cooking, still putting stuff away from Friday night, grocery shopped. Enjoying a Manhattan cocktail and "60 Minutes" now. Tomorrow will be a frenzy of wrapping - mix of different grades of paper but dressed up with red or green silk ribbons, setting the table and making sure the bar is ready.

I don't get OP's either/or attitude towards wrapping paper. The dollar store wrapping paper is cheap, sure, but most of it LOOKS cheap too, and therefore makes both the gift underneath and the wrapper look cheap as well. On the other hand, good quality wrapping paper can be had at steep discounts in the days and weeks after Christmas - buy it at 75% off and stockpile it for next year. Your gifts look great, you spent very little and no one is the wiser.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 24, 2018 2:04 AM |
Thanks everyone. His funeral was just 2 days ago, so I'm not yet ready to celebrate - but I'll look forward to a nice Christmas next year.

R99, I buy Dollar Store wrapping paper because it wraps better. It's more malleable, creases and folds better. I'm not so particular that I really care about the design (I tend to wrap with kitschy paper so their selection works just fine for me. More expensive, "quality" paper like Caspari, Papyrus, Anna Griffen, etc. is beautiful but not manageable, at least for me. Hope this makes some kind of sense. The vodka & sodas are kicking in.

It's Christmas Eve today. I'm Scandinavian and we celebrate the 24th here, NOT the 25th. Anyways, first we eat dinner. My family hails from West Norway so we eat pinnekjøtt (sheep), then we eat cookies and open presents. My family is not religious so we never go to church on Christmas Eve, though it is pretty common for most people to start the day by going to the church.

R123!!! In addition to a bunch of other things, I ordered something called a Scandinavian Dream Cake from this O&H Kringle Company in Wisconsin run by a Scandinavian Family-
I am sure it is like America's version of italian food- but that being said this thing is DELICIOUS! Its this simple square cake with this toasted coconut/brown sugary "topping". Oh my god- its unreal.
And to the folks who use cheap wrapping paper, I was just kidding! I was particularly sarcastic yesterday!!
I echo the sentiments of the person above with a horrifying January workload- that is why I am kind of glad to have to work Thursday and Friday- it will keep me relatively in a work related mode (and prepared for what is to come), and then I have another 4 days off anyway!
Christmas will be through January 1st as far as I am concerned. I actually cannot wait for Friday.

So sorry for your loss, R10. I hope that eventually you can find peace and comfort in the memories you shared.

Listening to A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Radio 4; dawn is just starting & all is quiet here in SoCal. It's exquisite, sublime, and a vestige of music, rituals, and speech that are rapidly fading. I will forever remember the joy, fulfillment, and pride in growing up and performing much of the same music as a child. For me it embodies the true spirit of Christmas. I always eagerly anticipate the special piece composed for each year's program. Rejoice!

R126 Kringle is a round/oval thing, if I remember right. More like a Danish but in a oval-ish shape, and then cut into slices.
