"A Christmas Carol" (1984) with George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge

Who's film performance as Ebenezer Scrooge is your favorite?

by Anonymousreply 26December 22, 2018 11:55 PM

I like it.

by Anonymousreply 1December 20, 2018 1:10 AM

Alistair Sim owns this genre.

by Anonymousreply 2December 20, 2018 1:12 AM

I like Sim's performance too, r2, but I prefer Scott's restraint.

by Anonymousreply 3December 20, 2018 1:15 AM

I preferred his restraints too but you can't have sex all day.

by Anonymousreply 4December 20, 2018 1:16 AM

Hands down. Albert Finney’s performance.

by Anonymousreply 5December 20, 2018 1:20 AM

It's no "A Carol Christmas" with Tori Spelling.

by Anonymousreply 6December 20, 2018 1:23 AM

The 1984 film has gorgeous set direction and location.

George C. Scott, Roger Rees(Fred), Susannah York( Mrs. Cratchit) all are dead.

by Anonymousreply 7December 20, 2018 1:25 AM

I grew up on Albert Finney’s version. Love it.

by Anonymousreply 8December 20, 2018 1:29 AM

Albert Finney's version is the musical, right?

by Anonymousreply 9December 20, 2018 1:42 AM

Yes indeed R9.

This is my favorite scene.

r10, I remember, as a kid, seeing "Scrooge"on the big screen.

I wanted to yell at the screen, "No. You forgot Tiny Tim!" when Scrooge is delivering toys to the Cratchits and turns to leave before he remembers he to give Tim his toy.

Alastair Sim is the ultimate Scrooge. No one else comes anywhere close.

Another vote for the George C. Scott version being the best one.

LOVE Vanessa Williams

George C. Scott.

I've repeatedly watched the 1984 version. Its screenplay is superb.

For instance, during the scene with the Ghost of Christmas Past where Ebenezer, as child, is alone at school Ghost comments how he "alone" without a "real friend".

Aged Ebenezer replies "He has his friends." and then names characters from Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

That's taken from the book and it never fails to give me a lump in my throat.

Mr. Magoo was the best Scrooge.

by Anonymousreply 20December 21, 2018 1:16 PM

No contest - Alistair Sims.

by Anonymousreply 21December 21, 2018 1:41 PM

There's a version with Patrick Stewart that is pretty good

by Anonymousreply 22December 22, 2018 8:26 PM

Sim is a little hammy but very much in the 50's style of Brit acting.

Scott's performance ages better.

by Anonymousreply 23December 22, 2018 8:31 PM

Another for George C. Scott, here. But I enjoy seceral others, his is just my favorite. It was the first version I watched as a kid, and that is most likely the reason.

by Anonymousreply 24December 22, 2018 11:49 PM

George C Scott's actually. Stellar.

by Anonymousreply 25December 22, 2018 11:51 PM

Albert Finney, and the entire production of "Scrooge" is, by far, the most entertaining to me.
