Senate Passes Criminal Justice Reform

The bill passed with an overwhelming bipartisan majority 87-12

It reduces federal minimum sentences, lets non violent currently incarcerated inmates work towards early release, and gives more support to recently released people.

It was pushed by an unlikely coalition of Chuck Grassley, Dick Durbin, Cory Booker, Mike Lee, and Jared Kushner.

And it's a HUGE loss to Tom Cotton, who did everything in his power day and night to stop this bill

As good a policy move as this is (and it is), let's be fair -- most of the Rethugs were just thinking ahead and trying to buy themselves a little insurance. You know, in case they find themselves in prison within the next few years. . . . .

This is really good. But we also need much stricter enforcement and harder punishments for white collar crime, which is rampart

About time. So . . . only now that Dee Plorable’s kids are getting strung out on opioids, do politicians finally realize “lock them up and throwing away key” drug sentences might not be the best approach?

CNN’s Van Jones hailed the Trump administration for pushing through a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill, which easily passed through the Senate Tuesday night.

Jones — an outspoken advocate of reducing prison sentences, who met with Trump adviser Jared Kushner to talk reforms on a number of occasions — spoke about the bill to Axios founder Mike Allen on Wednesday, and pinned its success on the White House.

The ex-Obama official explained the hurdles faced trying to get this bill passed, from opposition from House Democrats to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

When Allen asked what got McConnell on board, Jones said the answer would “piss off his liberal friends.”

“You know what made the difference? Donald J. Trump finally said enough is enough,” Jones explained. “Jared Kushner had been out there bleeding for this. Bleeding for this — and others.”

“Donald J. Trump made very clear that the next set of tweets was going to be for Mitch McConnell,” Jones said. “That, among other things, helped Mitch McConnell see the light.”

The bill, which passed the Senate by a margin of 87-12, was aimed primarily at reducing recidivism through changing mandatory minimum and sentencing laws, among other regulations.

R3 It's horrifying to look at the response to the crack epidemic in black communities in the 90s (put them in jail for a MINIMUM of 25 years) vs the response to the opioid epidemic in white communities (give them however much money they want and lets be compassionate)

Honestly fuck Van Jones. Never liked him. All 12 votes against the bill were republicans. GOP senators desperately tried to kill the bill. Yet this asshole still finds a way to praise Trump and attack democrats. What an asshole

Once again Republicans, Trump and Kushner just supporting legislation that will benefit them, as they will all soon be in prison.

The FINE PRINT hidden in the bill

"Anyone named Trump, or related to Trump, can not be prosecuted for any crimes or treason"
