You can't underestimate the influence Sophie B. Hawkins had using the pronoun "her" in Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover in 1992.
Does come inside my jungle book mean what I think it means?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 17, 2018 2:46 AM |
Yes, it does, r1.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 17, 2018 2:57 AM |
After listening to this song on a regular basis for the last 25 years, it still holds up.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 17, 2018 3:02 AM |
She had 2 big hit singles.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 17, 2018 3:04 AM |
I haven’t heard it much at all since it was first released, but I agree it’s still great. I love every section of the song.
She had a follow up hit that was even bigger, with “As I Lay Me Down”, but I thought that song was too pussy. I didn’t hate it, I thought it was okay, but it wasn’t nearly as fun as this first hit.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 17, 2018 3:04 AM |
"As I Lay Me Down" is a MAJOR adult contemporary hit that is still in heavy rotation in grocery stores, gas stations, office buildings.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 17, 2018 3:08 AM |
I remember this photo being on the cover of the As I Lay Me Down cassette single that I bought.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 17, 2018 3:09 AM |
OP, why not link to the official video?
I hope she made money off of the song.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 17, 2018 3:09 AM |
What is that backing vocal on “As I Lay”? The one that goes “Wah-da-da-d’oh!"
What are they actually saying there? Some tribal chant?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 17, 2018 3:10 AM |
Also, what are the lyrics to “Damn!”? 26 years ago I could only make out certain words, and the ones I didn’t know, I would just sing the non-word phonics as I heard them.
She’s saying “her” at one point? “Makin’ love to her with visions clear”? I always heard it as “makin’ love to who with visions clear”
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 17, 2018 3:21 AM |
I liked the version she and Melissa Etheridge did together.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 17, 2018 3:25 AM |
I wrote her off after seeing her perform this on David Letterman. She was writhing around on stage and was completely off key. She was horrible.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 17, 2018 3:29 AM |
IFC used to play her documentary "The Cream Will Rise"
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 17, 2018 3:32 AM |
I assume Tongues and Tails is a rimming reference.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 17, 2018 3:33 AM |
Does she still identify as a Tea Party Republican?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 17, 2018 3:35 AM |
Ugh, really, R16?
I took a look at her IG page. It's rather normal and not as selfie-centered as most celebs' IGs. Her kids are cute. I must say she has amazing hair for 54.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 17, 2018 3:40 AM |
She was a Hillary supporter in 2008, but she despised Obama and turned Republican once Obama got the nomination. She said she was a Tea Party libertarian.
Here she is at a Breitbart GOProud event in 2011. The interview with her starts at the 5:30 mark. She's batshit crazy.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 17, 2018 3:46 AM |
Ugh, that's really annoying. I used to love her.
God damn it, Sophie!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 17, 2018 3:47 AM |
Don't you mean Damn, I Wish You Were a Democrat R19?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 17, 2018 4:02 AM |
[quote]I liked the version she and Melissa Etheridge did together.
Etheridge jokingly commented “damn, I wish I wrote this song!”

I like Mr Tugboat Hello.
Raspberries & wine, boxing gloves, train stations, and valentines.
Makes no sense.
I didn't know she became a deplorable though, that sucks.

“I like tacos”.

Here’s the original banned video, featuring her writhing around in a diaper.

R12 thats some seriously goofy dancing.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 17, 2018 4:44 AM |
Sophie B hawking that record everywhere back in the day. She was on Team Vag if I remember correctly, before she sold her soul to the Tea Party.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 17, 2018 5:51 AM |
R25 Thanks. I've never seen it before.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 17, 2018 6:05 AM |
Someone modern should do a remake of this song. It wimoikd be perfect for Miss Shawn Mendes.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 18, 2018 2:33 AM |
R29
That’s actually brilliant.
Are there any good covers?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 18, 2018 2:40 AM |
A crazy lesbian. What a shocker.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 18, 2018 2:52 AM |
Don't forget about that weird song on her first album where she sings about incest with her brother.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 18, 2018 3:22 AM |
She dated someone from the Getty family, I saw it mentioned in one of her interviews. It means she didn't have to worry about money for quite a while.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 18, 2018 5:35 AM |
There was a scene in "The Cream Will Rise" where she gets manic and you see her mood swings.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 18, 2018 5:39 AM |
Correct grammar is: Damn, I Wish I WERE Your Lover. NOT "Was."
Good song. Bad grammar. It's bugged me for years.

I don’t understand the jungle book Reference
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 18, 2018 6:20 AM |
Thank you, R36.
To the poster upthread who suggested a modern cover: NO. Just no.
And certainly not fucking Shawn Mendes. The world does not need anymore of his weird, trendy Justin Bieber-style, Hispanic-wannabe enunciations. Certainly not on a cover of this song, which is great just as it is.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 18, 2018 8:40 AM |
love this song and the whole album. still so catchy after 20+ yrs.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 19, 2018 6:26 AM |
I always wondered if 'Shucks' was a tame word replacing a censored one. It's the one moment of the song that seems inauthentic.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 19, 2018 7:58 AM |
There was a VH1 special pre-Lillith Fair with Sophie, Melissa, Paula Cole etc. Sophie was so manic and over the top, for the finale she was separated from the rest of the women because she was hogging the spotlight. They left her playing bangos off in a corner.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 19, 2018 8:23 AM |
I've been listening to this song a lot lately. It always reminds me of 90210.

When Joan Jett sang "Crimson and Clover:" she used "her" as well, before Hawkins, LONG BEFORE
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 19, 2018 9:24 AM |
Back then it was edgy and cool to hear “Damn!” on the radio. That alone was the song’s appeal.
Terrible song. Not surprised that she’s a one-hit wonder.

The song is good. The reason she was a one-hit wonder was her mental instability.

Go to 5:50 of this video for the final performance where she is positioned away from the rest of the group playing bongos.

I recall some Rock gossip lady went on ET and told the tale of the other ladies not wanting to sing with Sophie because she was acting like a jackass.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 19, 2018 8:59 PM |
R47 She wasn't a one hit wonder. Later she had another big Top 10 hit called "Now I Lay Me Down".
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 21, 2018 3:27 AM |
I like that song but I'll bet she's a strict vegan, anti-man psychotic loon.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 21, 2018 3:31 AM |
Nothing wrong with being a strict vegan.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 21, 2018 3:35 AM |

I know someone always asks this question, but how does this particular two-hit wonder make her cash?
