Gabriella is the daughter of the former Princess Marie Astrid of Luxembourg. At one time, there was talk of Marie Astrid being a possible bride for Prince Charles but her Catholicism was an issue. Click for more photos of her in the link below. She was quite striking as a young woman.

Before the law of succession was changed (from males first to eldest child regardless of gender), King Carl Gustaf of Sweden was automatically the heir even though he was the fifth born child. His elder sisters were Margaretha, Birgitta, Desiree and Christina.

Sofia of Sweden looked tremendous in her red gown and pearls at the Nobel ceremony, in the photos posted in the prior thread. Amazing.
Good for Victoria for re-cycling and re-wearing her mother's Nina Ricci gown. Those kind of looks can be timeless and it makes sense to re-wear them and pass them down if they fit. Loved it.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 10, 2018 8:31 PM |
Good lord, the ROCKS on display at the Nobel ceremony! Sofia looks more regal than either Silvia or Victoria, both of whose dresses leave much to be desired - the Ricci dress needs more in the way of, er, real beauty to be carried off. Some designs just aren't done justice to by ordinary looking women.

They say that CP Mary went to some sort of finishing courses called Starmakers before she married into the Danish Royal Family. Matters of deportment, how to look someone in the eyes when conversing. Proper use of tableware, table manners and the like. It works for her because she comes off as classy to me. She’s from Tasmania, so she’s a tad raffish but she’s so charming. She’s got many detractors on the Royal forums...sounds like jealousy.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 14, 2018 5:27 PM |
R44 - I like Mary of Denmark. I think she's doing a wonderful job in her royal role. I can see her taking a course like Starmakers. Too bad there isn't a course called "How To Be Royal 101". Some of the British royals need some instruction.

R56 their yacht was like palace itself. Alexander III ordered it but Nicholas II used it from 1895. They sailed by Finnish coast and met local people. Finland was the most peaceful area of Imperial Russia. Minnie, Nicky’s mother, was very popular, because she was from Denmark and spoke Danish and many people in Finnish coast spoke Swedish and were able to talk with the Empress.

by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 21, 2018 7:49 PM |
Shouldn't the Ducal family found out if she was fertile before she married Guillaume? They could have been spared of all this. Personally, I hope Felix and Claire's oldest inherits the title.

In this day and age what difference is there if a British heir marries a Catholic?
by Anonymous | reply 106 | December 23, 2018 12:53 AM |
there isn't r106. Not since the rule or law was changed to allow the monarch or those in order of succession to be married to Catholics and keep their place in line. It would be fine, but the Catholic spouse would have to agree in advance to raise their children as Anglican, as they are heirs and the monarch is the "Defender of the Faith" among other things.
Any of their children outside the immediate heir could convert to Catholicism on reaching adulthood. They'd lose their place in succession however.

by Anonymous | reply 151 | January 5, 2019 7:37 PM |
R151 - It's different with European royals. They have events like "swearing in " ceremonies rather than coronations. I don't think the European royals who abdicated were CROWNED and ANOINTED with holy water from the River Jordan like Queen Elizabeth was at her coronation. The British monarch also lived through the trauma of King Edward VIII's abdication. When the Queen was 21 years old she made a broadcast and said these words: " My whole life -whether it be long or short - shall be devoted to your service"...I don't think the Queen will ever abdicate. She will relinquish her duties bit by bit to Charles but I don't think she'd go back on her word.
The other royal families don't have qualms about retiring and giving up the throne. It's almost expected in places like the Netherlands. The three Dutch Queens (Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix) all abdicated. I expect that Willem Alexander will do the same in due time for his daughter Catharina-Amalia.

I just figured out there are lots of Royal children in Europe. 150 yrs ago they would have married one another.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | January 10, 2019 7:09 PM |
R164 - yes but the royals are marrying "commoners" now instead of their fellow royals. That's good and bad. It's good for variety as far as the gene pool is concerned but bad because their standards have been lowered to such a degree that they risk becoming jokes (eg. divorced women, actresses, reality stars, women with children but no husband etc...).
Meanwhile, back in Monaco, Charlotte Casiraghi is denying that she broke up with her fiancee. I doubt it will last whether she marries him or not.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 10, 2019 8:38 PM |
R165 I suspect this is likely to become the norm. I personally think it’s boring when royals marry someone who is already titled or outrageously wealthy in some way. In a modern society, things like divorce, children out of wedlock, etc are the norm now. I know the royals aren’t really supposed to be modern, but I think it serves them better from a PR standpoint to marry for love.
Also, there seems to be MORE trouble with natural born royals and the super wealthy.

R165 Silvia brought much needed new genes to Bernadotte family.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 10, 2019 8:56 PM |
R166, I think it was one of the Swedish royals who said that marrying Swedish commoners was a way to align the royal family more with the people, long-term. It certainly wasn't said that way, but that was what was implied. It does make sense, really. Long-term, no one can claim that the royal family isn't Swedish. And they could there for a while.

There’s plenty of gossip about them. It’s just that they’re from countries where English isn’t the first language, so most of the tea spilled about them is seldom in English. And in Norway it’s against the law to say anything about the Royal Family. Paris Match and Der Spiegel have lots of gossip about them. R236 Silvia’s face is tragic
by Anonymous | reply 237 | February 7, 2019 6:59 PM |
R236 - are you alluding to her "plastic surgery"? I honestly don't think she's had any. She has a wrinkly neck and under-chin and surely that would've been taken care of with surgery?
by Anonymous | reply 238 | February 7, 2019 7:06 PM |
R238 - sadly, I think Silvia has ruined her face. She WAS really pretty. How do her eyes look more "open" now than when she was much younger? You can have a face lift without a neck lift. Her face lift should have worn off by now so I wouldn't be surprised if we see another version shortly. Her cheeks are also noticeably "fuller".

I'm pretty sure we've discussed Rania's new face on one of these threads before. It's truly dreadful. Hopefully, it will settle. She was so naturally beautiful that her aging couldn't have been so bad as to distort her face with fillers. What a contrast seeing Martha Louise's picture right below. Though only a year younger, her naturally aging features are graceful and still beautiful, but Rania has had her face butchered with beyond recognition. She used to be so beautiful. Sure, the desert climate is harsh on skin, but FFS... She an Terry Dubrow ought to host some program together just for the giggles.

Rumors of a romance between the late King Baudouin of the Belgians and his stepmother, Princess Liliane de Rethy have surfaced. This supposedly happened BEFORE his marriage to the Spanish aristocrat (Queen Fabiola). This news is surprising because Baudouin was a conservative and very religious man who didn't even want to sign legislation to legalize abortion in Belgium.

Well, I wouldn’t mind talking about the Grimaldis of Monaco. I like them. There’s been a little crazy here and there, but overall they seem like a close family, very stylish. Grace did a wonderful job of being princess and seemed a loving mother. I appreciate Caroline, such a stunning beauty in her youth and today a very attractive matriarch of the clan. I also find the daughters-in-law Beatrice Borromeo and what was the other one’s name? Tatiana? both to be very chic. Young princess Alexandra is always so ladylike in her dress and demeanor. Finally I think Charlene is gorgeous and projects a suitable air of serenity and mystery.
Thoughts, anyone?
by Anonymous | reply 421 | May 1, 2019 6:29 PM |
I think the princely family of Monaco is interesting too. They’re a bit like an 80s nighttime soap opera. Nonetheless, their family and dominance over Monaco goes back to the 14th century if I’m not mistaken, and they made an interesting marriage in the 19th century with the daughter of an English duke and a German princess, so every Grimaldi thereafter has shared ancestry with most of the major royal Houses in Europe.
by Anonymous | reply 422 | May 1, 2019 6:35 PM |
Are the Grimaldis respected amongst the royalty of Europe?
by Anonymous | reply 423 | May 1, 2019 6:38 PM |
I’d say more now than before Prince Rainier mounted the throne. Monaco was considered a shady place and the family penchant for infidelity and out of wedlock children was distasteful for most royal and princely families. Rainier’s marriage to Grace raised the profile of the place, and his shrewd and strategic business skills saved the principality from Onassis, growing it physically through land reclamation and growing it upwards with skyscrapers and industry. Rainier and Grace were invited to most of the big royal events in the 60s and 70s like The Shah of Iran’s Persopolis celebration, the royal wedding of The King of The Hellenes and Princess Annmarie of Denmark, the royal wedding of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana, among others. Queen Elizabeth is said to have a warm relationship with Prince Albert and was the first to call him when Rainier passed away. Caroline marrying a Continental HRH also helped the Grimaldi profile because she got to go to some royal weddings as her husband’s guest. Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain, granddaughter of Queen Victoria herself, was a godmother to Prince Albert.
by Anonymous | reply 424 | May 1, 2019 7:12 PM |
I have to laugh. Hardly anyone from the British Royal Family would give the princely family of Monaco the time of day because of the reigning prince marrying an actress. They stuck up their noses to the Grimaldis for years. Now, they have a big LA grifter in their family. Karma is a bitch!

Interesting, Alexandra chose not to wear the Khedive tiara which many of Queen Ingrid’s descendants have worn at their weddings. She’s wearing the floral tiara which can also be taken apart and worn as brooches, I think a Berleberg piece originally.

I just watched the video of the wedding of Sophia and Prince Carl Philip of Sweden. I thought it was a beautiful and touching wedding. I never really liked her until I saw this video.
The long wait of Carl Philip up at the alter was excruciatingly painful. His best man kept making weird faces. The orchestra should have played something to kill the time. Almost all of the royal ladies were scowling, including Sophie Wessex.
I wonder if the delay was because they were trying to quiet the crying child in the back beyond the closed doors. Could the wailing kid have been part of the wedding party (page or flower girl) but had a meltdown?
You could hear the kid crying throughout the WHOLE ceremony. Someone should have dragged the kid's ass completely out of the church to a faraway location.
I was worried that the royal toddler was going to act up. Who brings young children to a wedding even if they are royals?! Crown Princess Victoria had her baby the next day.
The Enya song that the orchestra played as Sophia walked up the aisle was incredibly beautiful. Carl Philip is so in love with her and expressed it. She did too. Her dress, tiara, and the flowers were all pretty.
The song at the end was fun.

For those who never saw Frederik & Mary's wedding. Very touching how Crown Prince Henrik's eyes welled up with tears while waiting for Mary and even after she arrived at the altar. Her bouquet was unusual. Her adult bridesmaids (including 2 of her sisters and a friend) wore very sophisticated dresses. The dresses almost seemed like a mix between a sarong and a Vietnamese dress (Ao Da).
Mary's dad was adorable in his kilt.
