She left meat out for the wolves so she could watch them come down the mountain and eat from the safety of her home... She'd asked her closest friends—if they stopped by her place and found her dead—to tell no one, place her naked body in a bedsheet, drag it up Canyon Mountain, and leave her for her other friends, the wolves.[72]

So many barbiturate over dose deaths in the 50s--60s, hard to tell if they were accidental because the drugs were so strong and folks were not adequately warned or treated for dependency, or if these handy drugs just made it super easy for depressed people to off themselves. What throws everybody off the track is Marilyn had several other brushes of taking too many sleeping pills,. What people never understand is MM had an encylopedic knowlege of prescription meds and knew precisely her tolerance, past episodes were bids for sympathy and attn. On the fatal night she wasnt aware of the interraction between nembutal and chloral hydrate and Eunice Murray may have given too high doseage of the chloral hydrate. Anderson Cooper's brother killed himself. Maybe not lesser known; rather well known.

Flipside: Judee Sill, a 70s singer whom Brian Eno said wrote a perfect song ("The Kiss"), is considered to have killed herself but it's disputed. It could have been an accidental overdose. What was taken to be a suicide note could have been lyrics and not a goodbye, cruel world.

Ziegfeld Girl, Allyn King, tried to maintain the strict weight and measurement demands as stipulated in her contract, by taking diet pills and nearly starving to death. This led to a two-year stint in a sanitarium. When she was released, she went to live with her aunt in Greenwich Village. Unable to meet her ideal weight, she leapt from her aunt's fifth story apartment and landed in the courtyard, breaking limbs and fracturing her skull. She died two days later in hospital.

Bella Darvi, who was given her stage name by her mentors, DARryl Zanuck and his wife, VIrginia, committed suicide by turning on the gas on her stovetop in her Monte Carlo apartment. Her decomposed body was discovered ten days later.

A colorful personality, Bella lived with the Zanucks, and was for a time Virginia Zanuck's best friend and confidante until the missus discovered that Darvi and Zanuck were canoodling behind her back. Virginia threw her out and threatened that her former galpal would never work in Hollywood again. Darvi fled to France and Zanuck followed, but a year later, he would dump her over her indiscreet affairs with women. However, he would continue to bail her out of her gambling debts, until he had had enough and refused. She killed herself immediately afterwards.

Speaking about Darvi, whose most famous role was as the courtesan Nefer in "The Egyptian," co-star Jean Simmons reportedly sneered, "Now there was an actress who nefer was."

A huge loss in the world of cult/underground punk music, wild rebellious vocalist Mutsumi ”623” Takahashi of the all-female funk metal/noise/avante-garde band SUPER JUNKY MONKEY. It’s such a shame, she was so beautiful and fierce and unlike any other female performer before or since. She was only just 30 years old when she died and left her bandmates/friends totally heartbroken and in shock, with no one having any idea to this day why she committed suicide.

From the wiki:

[quote] On February 5, 1999, Mutsumi Fukuhara (nee Takahashi) committed suicide by leaping from the balcony of her apartment in Osaka, leaving behind her husband and one-year-old son. The other band members decided not to continue without her and instead moved on to other projects.

Lupe Velez is one of my fave suicide stories. Took an overdose of sleeping pills, woke up feeling nauseated, ran to throw up in the toilet, and drowned there.

by Anonymousreply 160December 3, 2018 11:12 PM

The drowning part has pretty much been disproved as urban myth. But she did die. She was a hot one. Had an affair with young Gaary Cooper and makeup had to cover the scratches she left. The two of them made a film called "Wolf Song. " There's a nude shot of him (but he's partially obscured by shrubs) in that.

by Anonymousreply 161December 3, 2018 11:18 PM

She was also with Johnny Weissmuller (sp?) and he might have been the one with the scratches.

by Anonymousreply 162December 4, 2018 12:34 AM

That was one of the bullshit stories that was in "Hollywood Babylon", that Lupe Velez, violently sick from ingesting a bottle of sleeping pills after eating a spicy last supper, ran to to the bathroom, slipped, and died with her head in the toilet bow. I wonder how Kenneth Anger thought that one up?

by Anonymousreply 163December 4, 2018 12:47 AM

Correction: James Leo Herlihy died at 66, not 36. I guess more people have seen the movie than read the book, but the novel "Midnight Cowboy" is truly a memorable piece of work.

It was a big story at the time, but I don't know if many people today are aware of suicide of Pete Duel. He was only 31 when he killed himself with a gunshot to the head. It really was a shock, this handsome, talented, successful young actor destroying himself. Nobody knew that he really was a hot mess; alcoholic, prone to depression, and suffering epileptic seizures. He was trying to control his drinking but on the night he killed himself he was blind drunk, which I guess made him fool around with the gun. Pete Duel; so talented, so good looking, so doomed.

This thread made me start reading through it again, and it mentioned that he was on an episode of "Mickey", a short lived tv series starring Mickey Rooney. Although Rooney was the star of the show, it featured a Chinese actor named Sammee Tong as Rooney's handyman. He was popular with audiences; he had a loyal fan base from his time on 'Bachelor Father." ABC was seriously leaning towards picking up the remaining six shows of the season when news came that Sammee Tong had committed suicide from an overdose. Heavy gambling debts and connections to the mob were cited as reasons. The show was cancelled. The official reason for the show's cancellation Tong's suicide. ABC said they would have picked up the show had he lived. Interesting that Duel would later end HIS life, and his death spelled the end of a tv series also.

Pier Angeli has been mentioned briefly. A once promising young Italian actress, she dated James Dean for a few weeks and lived for the rest of her life under the delusion that they were Romeo and Juliet, kept apart by her possessive mother. She married Vic Damone, and there was the urban legend that James Dean gunned his motorcycle in front of the church where the wedding was held, but that was never proven. Anyway, she grew dissolute as she grew older and never stopped talking about how James Dean had been the great love of her life: "love is behind me now, love died in a Porsche." But the great love affair was a figment of her imagination. She was a mere footnote in Dean's short life. He contemptuously called her "Miss Pizza." She died of a pill overdose at age 40.

I remember reading that she laid in the street before help arrived, those around her were not aware that she was an Academy Award winning actress. She remained on life support for a few days until her family pulled the plug. She was only 62.

R256: Why should an Oscar winner get special treatment? NB: My dad died after suffering a stroke while Christmas shopping, too, although he was in a store rather than the street.

Walter Becker of Steely Dan: In 1978, Becker's girlfriend, Karen Roberta Stanley, died of a drug overdose in his apartment on January 30, resulting in a wrongful death lawsuit against him.

Then there's Brian Keith, but I don't think he knew Becker.

"Goodbye to all of you who have tried so hard to comfort me in my loss of William Haines, whom I have been with since 1926. I now find it impossible to go it alone, I am much too lonely."

Jimmie Shields' 1974 suicide note after the death from cancer in 1973 of his lover MGM star William Haines who pretty much gave up his movie star career to live openly with Shields.

Why do people kill themselves (or attempt to) when their health is declining?

by Anonymousreply 269December 6, 2018 6:31 PM

Because maybe it's a slow very painful process that can cause untold misery for a long time to come?

For me just bring on that extra bit of morphine.

R269, it’s called “suffering.” I do appreciate your innocence, it’s refreshing.
