Jeremy Northam

Still a handsome zaddy, and one of the best living British actors.

He was married for five years only during his life, from 2004-09. He is 56 years old. Gay?

I used to have a crush on him. Then I forgot about him.

[quote]He was married for five years only during his life,

Do you know people who were married at times that were not "during their life?"

by Anonymousreply 2November 22, 2018 9:07 PM

Huge crush. STILL. And when he sings Ivor Novello songs in "Gosford Park," my heart still goes pitty-pat.

by Anonymousreply 3November 22, 2018 9:09 PM

At 56 it doesn't matter if he's gay or not. He's obsolete.

by Anonymousreply 4November 22, 2018 10:03 PM

I find it funny that people on DL are still stuck in the 20th century regarding marriage. Just because a man is not married by 30 or 40 or never doesn't mean he's gay. People are not marrying as much these days. My older brother is a straight as can be but has never been married and recently turned 40. He's had serious relationships with women in the past. One, in fact, almost did him in ten years ago and he swore he would never marry. He had a long-term relationship since then (2009-2016) but that ended when his girlfriend insisted on marriage.

by Anonymousreply 5November 22, 2018 11:23 PM

[quote]One, in fact, almost did him

BTW: I don't mean that she tried to kill him, just that he fucked with him so bad that he went into a deep depression.

by Anonymousreply 6November 22, 2018 11:24 PM

I thought that he was gay, but a U.K. penpal has informed me that he is heterosexual. In the U.K., heterosexual men and women aren’t pressured into coupling as they are here in America..

by Anonymousreply 7November 22, 2018 11:33 PM

Gay. Married Liz Moro for a Hollywood career that didn’t materialise. Divorced Liz Moro. Has or had huge frau fan following - see r5. Friends in London have confirmed gay but VERY discreet.

by Anonymousreply 8November 22, 2018 11:41 PM

He married awfully late if he was pushing for a Hollywood career. Should have done it in the 90s

by Anonymousreply 9November 22, 2018 11:56 PM

Jonathan Rhys Meyers made a point of saying in an interview that Northam was homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 10November 23, 2018 12:04 AM

I always confuse him with Emma Thompson 's husband.

by Anonymousreply 11November 23, 2018 12:15 AM

Interesting - Link R10?

He has always pinged a bit to me for sure.

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2018 12:25 AM

He still acts, though, aside from The Crown, not in anything really high profile

Loved him in The Winslow Boy. He was gorgeous in that and gave a great performance

by Anonymousreply 13November 23, 2018 2:49 AM

Hmm, not so late r9. It did seem for a while that his US career was gaining some traction and when Hollywood comes knocking, we’ll you know the rest. Ms Moro I think was a make up artist he met on set.

by Anonymousreply 14November 23, 2018 11:48 AM

Is "zaddy" Yiddish?

by Anonymousreply 15November 23, 2018 11:49 AM

I will watch Emma every time it's on just to see him. And I love him in Gosford Park.

by Anonymousreply 16November 23, 2018 11:59 AM

Me too r16. The "Badly done, Emma" scene makes me want to cry.

by Anonymousreply 17November 23, 2018 12:21 PM

Definitely batting for the gay team.

by Anonymousreply 18November 23, 2018 12:59 PM

A gratuitous head shot of Mr. Ivor Novello

I love how bitchy Maggie Smith is to him in Gosford Park. She clearly did NOT enjoy his singing/piano playing.

by Anonymousreply 20November 23, 2018 4:38 PM

He was great in Emma. He wasn't overly burdened with silly comedy like the other actors. It's a shame he was only ever cast in period pieces.

by Anonymousreply 21November 23, 2018 5:19 PM

Years ago someone here (a guy) claimed to have been on a date with him. The date did NOT go well!

by Anonymousreply 22November 23, 2018 10:36 PM

But admittedly, he was too young and good looking for Emma. You're not supposed to see Mr Knightley for the first time and think, Yo Emma, grab this one.

by Anonymousreply 23November 24, 2018 11:07 AM

Maaaybe, R23. He could have done with being a little more staid and reserved, but I didn't mind that too much. He's supposed to be so well suited to Emma, aside from the age difference (36 or 37 to her 21) that, when you read the book, you wonder why they don't get married in the first chapter. I think it's fine in the film because it highlights her self-absorption and obliviousness.

by Anonymousreply 24November 24, 2018 11:42 AM

Well, ^that^ age difference was acceptable until fairly recently. I first read the book i n my early 20s and had the impression that Mr K was a fuddy duddy, hanging out with Emma's annoying father all the time and that those two were contemporaries in age, like 60ish. Yes, it's possible that I completely! misread that part. So the ending in which Emma marries this elderly bachelor with mutton chop whiskers was enough to put me off rereading the book until after the Paltrow movie.

by Anonymousreply 25November 24, 2018 11:58 AM

I think there's room for the sense that he's an old, settled bachelor, it's part of the guessing game the author plays. This is when Emma starts to perceive him as something more than an old friend (but she still thinks she's interested in Frank Churchill):

[quote]There he was, among the standers-by, where he ought not to be; he ought to be dancing,—not classing himself with the husbands, and fathers, and whist-players, who were pretending to feel an interest in the dance till their rubbers were made up,—so young as he looked!—He could not have appeared to greater advantage perhaps anywhere, than where he had placed himself. His tall, firm, upright figure, among the bulky forms and stooping shoulders of the elderly men, was such as Emma felt must draw every body's eyes; and, excepting her own partner, there was not one among the whole row of young men who could be compared with him.—He moved a few steps nearer, and those few steps were enough to prove in how gentlemanlike a manner, with what natural grace, he must have danced, would he but take the trouble.

by Anonymousreply 26November 24, 2018 12:40 PM

Saw him in some older movie that was on cable not long ago (Happy, Texas) and he's really good (and good-looking) in it

He's hot and a good actor, but I guess Colin Firth is getting all the dapper, middle-aged English gent roles

by Anonymousreply 28November 24, 2018 7:29 PM

He was spectacularly sexy in the British TV film of that Barbara (Ruth Rendell) Vine mystery A Fatal Inversion in which he plays a conflicted bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 29November 24, 2018 7:34 PM

Austen ((sigh)). It really is criminal that she didn't live long enough to write more books.

by Anonymousreply 30November 25, 2018 12:07 AM

Didn't he play a doctor in some US TV show? I don't think that one even lasted a full season.

He was a hot daddy in The Crown.
