Do you judge people based on appearance?

I once read only shallow people don't judge others based on appearance.

I think you can learn a lot about a person based on how they look: how they dress, how they carry themselves, their weight, etc. But do you think you can also judge personality or temperament based on their physical features themselves? Do you think being attractive or unattractive makes a difference?

For example, the guy in the Holbein portrait looks rather pedantic.

Yes. Humans recognise each other in their faces.

We don't have to be phrenologists to 'read' faces.

by Anonymousreply 1November 22, 2018 12:04 PM

Recognition and inference of personality/temperament based on physical features isn't the same thing, r1.

by Anonymousreply 2November 22, 2018 12:05 PM

I don't JUDGE them. The only thing I judge on is behavior and to a lesser extent, attitudes and beliefs.

However, I do OBSERVE people's appearance but those observations have no bearing on me as to what worth I think they have as an individual.

Possibly.

Funny, all I thought was that he looks like he would have a big dick.

by Anonymousreply 5November 22, 2018 12:12 PM

r3 perhaps judge is too harsh a word. Perhaps "make inferences" would be better ...

by Anonymousreply 6November 22, 2018 12:12 PM

lol r5 ...never change, DL

by Anonymousreply 7November 22, 2018 12:13 PM

Of course I do. Who doesn't?

by Anonymousreply 8November 22, 2018 12:14 PM

Are you young, OP?

by Anonymousreply 9November 22, 2018 12:15 PM

We all judge. It’s human nature

Huh? Shallow people actually DO judge others based on appearance. That's my experience.

The biggest joke, when accomplished successful straight men are disappointed that the 'gorgeous' women they're attracted to aren't very bright and are gold diggers. Quelle surprise! Lots of my accomplished straight male relatives aren't lucky in their relationships because they do judge a book by it's cover.

It is from Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray, r11:

[quote]People say sometimes that beauty is only superficial. That may be so, but at least it is not so superficial as thought is. To me, beauty is the wonder of wonders. It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.

This is a particularly imbecilic thread even for your standards, John/Program Troll.

by Anonymousreply 13November 22, 2018 12:37 PM

I do................but what I have discovered is really really good looking men (and women) can have unlikeable personalities, traits, and beliefs just like normal looking people and I DONT overlook that, and all of a sudden they arent so attractive....I use to try and ignore it and give them major slack due to looks, but I dont do that anymore. Basically pretty is as pretty does.

People who sweat are awful.

People with eyes too close together are untrustworthy.

People with teeth missing are hillbillies.

Females caked in make-up are idiots.

People who have black stains on their body are failures.

Men with square-shaped brows and high foreheads are Greek Gods in marble.

Well I check out fingernails- long/bitten/dirty....big negative. Same for dirty clothes, and also if they are polyester or synthetic blends. Clean ears too. Amazing what one can see in there sometimes.

Every sensible person gathers information from another person's appearance, but that's not the same thing as "judging", to use the word in its negative sense.

To treat a person as inferior because of their appearance is shallow or snobbish, and to regard a person as a potential life partner because you like their appearance is foolish.

It's terribly cruel to treat someone as fascinating because they're physically beautiful, because beauty never lasts.

Which character said that in "Dorian Gray", one of the shallow assholes?

by Anonymousreply 22November 23, 2018 7:14 PM

r22, are you new to the DL?

by Anonymousreply 23November 23, 2018 7:21 PM

R21 What's wrong with being "snobbish"?

Hillary was being a snob deploring half of the nation's population.

by Anonymousreply 24November 23, 2018 7:35 PM

I bet r24 faps feverishly and uncontrollably to pictures of Hillary Clinton
