There are always going to be people who want to try and downplay whatever it is they have (and I don't just mean here on DL but everywhere) - because they do indeed see what everyone else sees and it threatens them/makes them uncomfortable for whatever reasons they may have. I think they were cool with him during CMBYN promo because they thought all that weird shit was going to end once the promo tour was over and that they were just playing it up for the sake of the movie. And that Timmy was going to inevitably move on to cooler/more famous people as his star kept rising. But now that it's been almost a year since promo and the "weird" behavior hasn't ended, it's causing them to lash out. These are just my observations from seeing how certain fans have been behaving. A lot of the Armie backlash (as it pertains to his friendship with Timmy) seems to have started after TIFF.

I think this does not end, unless in the short term. Tim is not interested in women and Armie every day is more irritated with the lady "birdies cupcakes". The LRD theater has gone out the window, and I doubt she will appear again hand in hand and doing nonsense. Armie and Tim are a couple, you can see them, when they are together they look happy and shine with each other.

To be fair, besides ASIB, all the other Oscar movies released so far are not doing all that great either. A stagger release is usually done to build anticipation and good will, but BB never really had that so they probably should have gone wide sooner.
