Heavy drinkers in Hollywood

Who do you think drinks a bit or more than a bit?

by Anonymousreply 154February 17, 2020 10:28 PM

Keanu used to be drunk most of the time.

by Anonymousreply 1November 20, 2018 3:54 AM

Tom Hanks.

by Anonymousreply 2November 20, 2018 3:54 AM

R1 I believe that.

by Anonymousreply 3November 20, 2018 3:57 AM

Brad Pitt was a arty heavy drinker, maybe he still is. Laurence Oliver was always drunk, right? Kinsky, sick and drunk. Apparently John Cusack a normal Irish drunk. Tom Hanks? But maybe Hanks took the cure.

Can newsreaders count? I just heard a new one the other day, but I forget her name.

Chris Matthews doesn’t drink.

Anna Maria Cox doesn’t drunk.

Former House leader John Boehner, who would drink and smoke like a fish on fire.

Diane Sawyer, as far as I know, still drinks.

,Joan Kennedy - may have stopped drinking, poor dear.

Lara is one of the saddest of all. Those pics of her swigging from a bottle in a daytime liquor store parking lot are just awful. Jonathan Rhys Meyers drinking cheap vodka on a London street. Also there were pics of Brigitte Neilson swigging from a bottle of Popov and rolling around on the ground in an LA Park. She must have sobered up because she went on to birth a baby later at 60 or whatever she is.

Kiefer Sutherland

by Anonymousreply 32November 20, 2018 5:34 AM

William Holden. He died after hitting his head on the bedside table at his apt. He dabbed the wound with some tissues but couldn't stop the flow of blood. He was probably too wasted to think it was a big deal. The loss of blood killed him.

Add Errol Flynn to R18's post. Didn't Flynn's drunken pal Raoul Walsh take Barrymore's body from the morgue and bring him to Flynn's house? I believe they propped him on the couch and waited for Flynn to find his dead buddy in the morning. Flynn came home after a night of partying drunk off his ass saw Barrymore's body and freaked out.

by Anonymousreply 37November 21, 2018 10:38 AM

Oliver Reed might be the king of heavy drinkers, if he counts as a Hollywood actor.

He died at a bar having lunch.

From IMDB, here was his lunch: He died of a heart attack in a bar after downing three bottles of Captain Morgan's Jamaica rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous doubles of Famous Grouse whiskey and Hennessy cognac, and beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling. His bar bill for that final lunch time totaled 270 Maltese lira, almost £450, about $594.72.

We could be here all day just going by visuals combined with having life experience of alcoholics and the visual signs of consistent over indulgence. That's why Paltrow , Blige or Madge don't fool me.

Former Brooks must be Foster Brooks who was a comedian in the old days whose schtick was playing drunk. Whether he was really a drunk I don’t know. His act seemed really tasteless and tawdry when I was a kid. He was from my hometown of Louisville and held a golf tournament there every year which is probably the only reason I knew who he was.

Ann Sheridan. F. Scott Fitzgerald. William Faulkner. Ernest Hemingway though was he in Hollywood? Well, it's an infinite task, naming them all.

John Barrymore - who was famous for passing out and sleeping through the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.

by Anonymousreply 57November 21, 2018 4:57 PM

Spencer Tracy, the drunkest drunk who ever drank.

by Anonymousreply 58November 21, 2018 5:07 PM

[quote] R55: MTM would be surprising. She always came across as a quiet control freak

MTM was one of those alcoholics who would twist herself into a pretzel to avoid being labeled an alcoholic. Sometimes, it’s because of fear that they can’t stop, and don’t want to be seen drinking after admitting that they should t be drinking. Sometimes Pride, or I guess, a million different reasons.

by Anonymousreply 59November 21, 2018 5:11 PM

IIRC, Spencer Tracy would occasionally check into some fancy NYC hotel, with a suitcase full of alcohol bottles, and he’d drink-away his stay there.

by Anonymousreply 60November 21, 2018 5:43 PM

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were both lifelong alcoholics, although with Davis she was able to abstain from drinking when she was working. Crawford couldn't, she drank on the set and was often drunk for public appearances.

by Anonymousreply 61November 21, 2018 6:00 PM

Johnny Carson was a HUGE drunk, but knew how to clean up whenever necessary.

by Anonymousreply 62November 21, 2018 9:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 63November 21, 2018 9:57 PM

I'm so glad someone wrestled the bottle of booze out of "J-Law's" hands and got her to shut up. Or maybe they just locked her in her mansion and let her drink and babble like an obnoxious, irritating idiot all by herself.

by Anonymousreply 64November 21, 2018 10:16 PM

Years ago I was a waiter at restaurant that Kate Capshaw and Rita Wilson would frequent. One time, they were there during the swing shift (around 3pm). It was just them in the dining room. I was *slowly* filling and refilling the sugar caddies at nearby tables... and totally eavesdropping. Seems Rita was pissed because Tom was wasted the night before. She made him sleep on the couch. Again. She was concerned it was becoming a major problem.

For some reason, that cracked me up. The most famous actor in the world relegated to the couch for being a common drunk.

by Anonymousreply 72November 21, 2018 10:52 PM

Madonna doesn't drink, or at least has not for most of her life. She is too much a control freak to allow herself to lose control by drinking.

Marilyn Monroe's downfall were "downers" - particularly barbiturates.

Humphrey Bogart and his wife Mayo June Methot were such heavy and violent drinkers their residence in Hollywood was known as "Sluggy Hollow."

Kit Harrington - see one or more of his recent threads here.

by Anonymousreply 74November 21, 2018 11:55 PM

Adam Driver. Photographed in Cannes wandering around a party clutching a half empty bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label to his heart.

Has the fact that Driver and his wife had a kid two years ago in utmost secrecy been discussed here? This may or may not be due to the paternity of the tot. Now, that is enough to drive any man to drink!

by Anonymousreply 94November 22, 2018 5:39 AM

R115 Yes, good one. Eszterhas called himself a "militant smoker" too, until he got throat cancer. He survived and gave up cigs and booze, but got hooked on God instead. He wrote a terrible memoir called "Crossbearer" about all this.

by Anonymousreply 118November 24, 2018 6:31 AM

Janeane Garofalo used to drink, but stopped in 2001. Amy Poehler initiated the intervention.

by Anonymousreply 119November 24, 2018 6:33 AM

It's different nowadays. Bogart, Mitchum, Huston, Wayne, these were real MEN, and "real" MEN drank, simple as that. They started in the afternoon and drank until the end of the evening. Day in and day out.

Nowadays hollywood heavy drinkers means actors get drunk at every event after-party and then go to rehab behind closed doors.

Heavy drinker means what? If I know this one actor and he gets hammered two or three nights a week, does that a heavy drinker make? More of a normal binge drinker. The other days he's in the daily mail getting iced coffees and going to the gym and looking healthy.

Clooney's pals did a slight intervention, because he was drinking daily like his heroes Sinatra and Gerry Weintraub. "First vodka at 4pm" type of thing.

by Anonymousreply 120November 24, 2018 6:43 AM

See R120, Doctors have been trying for years to get through to people that there is no such thing as "normal binge drinker", as binge drinking is abnormal, and not healthy. It is better to have a unit or two each and everyday apparently, rather than saving them up. I'm not judging, nor am I a teetotaler, but honestly feel binge drinking may only be somewhat "normal" for first or second year university students.

by Anonymousreply 123November 27, 2018 1:31 AM

Harrison Ford

Go back and watch What Lies Beneath with the knowledge that he was drunk the entire time, also stoned. From what I understand he's always smoked pot. I have no idea how long he'd been drunk while he was working but I'm sure if I go back and watch all his movies it would be evident when it started.

by Anonymousreply 124November 27, 2018 1:45 AM

Maybe that's why Harrison Ford was operating his plane so badly (crashed). Patrick Swayze also crashed a plane and was suspected to be on alcohol.

by Anonymousreply 125November 27, 2018 1:49 AM

If anybody needs a motivation to stop drinking.........just google a recent photo of jan michael vincent and it is enuf to shock you into giving up booze cigs and drugs.

Marilyn s problem was that she couldnt sleep...........and she had to be up and looking beautiful the next day for the camera s...............a very distressing problem to have. In 1962 sleeping meds and barbituates etc etc, basically anything a dr prescribed were viewed as miracle drugs and were not considered taboo. There was no such thing as a rehab center in 1962. A different era.

There was never an incident either making a movie or a public event when Marilyn wasnt in full control, She was at most a moderate drinker and then it was bloody marys and champagne..........for sure not the beverage s of choice for alcoholics.

Johnny Carson was a raging alcoholic who propped himself up with cocaine. The coke Delorean got busted with was for him. Delorean's attorneys were from NBC.

I remember hearing about Jason Priestly having a serious case of whisky dick from all his boozing. He would have to feverishly flog his dick to get it up and had difficulty keeping hard.

I heard something similar with Sean Penn.

I think Madonna was a hot mess "bad girl" before getting knocked up. Her life was off-kilter. She was dyking out, doing drugs in Miami, singing terribly (she'd basically stopped singing and was sing-talking her lyrics). Then she got pregnant and cleaned up her shit and we got Ray of Light. It's been kind of tragic ever since.

R141 never heard of Kimmel drinking but it does seem the late night hosts do like their alcohol.

Carson, Letterman. Merv Griffin? Chelsea Handler.

Whoopi Goldberg used to be. She went to Mardi Gras, blacked out for a couple of days and came to in another city. She doesn't really drink anymore.
