Women's hair should be elegantly coiffed at all times went out in public. It must be neatly styled and secured away from the face.
Enough of this bullshit of women trying to appear young, when they're not, by trying to appear as if they've just stepped off a tennis court, when they haven't. Poorly cut then moussed and scrunched is NOT good enough, ladies.

"Ladies should all shave their heads, just like me."
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 14, 2018 12:51 PM |
Women have been letting men's expectations define how they look or what constitutes acceptable feminine ideals for centuries. It's time for women to get to shave their heads, a la Furiosa in Mad Max, or pixie cuts and faux hawks if they want a little hair, and if men like long hair they can exhort their sons to grow theirs out and style it. Frankly, since men are prone to male pattern baldness, they should have long hair from childhood through their twenties since their window of opportunity is narrower. Incidentally we should also bring back tights for men, as many guys have beautiful, muscular calves - they're much more attractive in tights than women's shapeless calves.
Veronica Lake herself complained about her peekaboo hairstyle, as it basically had the effect of wearing an eyepatch over one eye. Modern women have no time or patience to go backwards to the days of oils and curlers anymore than they're going to resume wearing hoop skirts and whale bone corsets.

So the long stringy hair is slowly fading away and short bob cuts are coming in.
Short bob cuts that make the young women who wear them look boring and frau-ish, and no more styled than the slobs with pony tails. At least long hair can be pretty and can be made into different styles if a lady cares to make the effort for once, while the dull new bobs can never be anything but dull new bobs.

The only thing sadder than an old queen is an old feminist desperately trying to pretend that it doesn't matter how far she's let herself go. Show enough self-respect to be well-groomed. You don't have to have an elaborate hairstyle, a ton of makeup or the latest fashion, just don't go around looking like an unmade bed. You know who you are, don't bother to deny it.
You know who else needs to heed that very sound advice? Men who go around looking like unmade beds. You think Steve Bannon is any more acceptable than some old lady shambling around looking like hell? He's not.
Nobody should go around deliberately looking like an unmade bed. Not only does it lack self-respect, it shows a total lack of respect for others. No excuses. No whining. Get your act together and clean it up.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 15, 2018 12:36 AM |

The majority of Americans make zero effort to look good, or at least, make no effort after age thirty or so.
I don't understand it, and I don't mean that everyone should wear fashionable designer crap. No, clothes that fight right and that flatter the wearer at least a little can be had for the same cost as clothes that don't, yet few take even that much trouble.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 15, 2018 2:22 AM |
It's a gay men's gossip site, R46. Gay men offering our frequently critical opinions on women (and everything else) is what we do here. It's an old site, we've been around on the Internet for decades. We've always been the same, no surprises. What did you think you were doing?
If you choose to visit the Datalounge, gay men being critical is what you are choosing. This is what I don't get, if you hate it so much, enough to complain about it all the time, why do you keep coming here? It's not as if there's a shortage of alternative websites to visit.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 15, 2018 5:30 AM |
Wait a minute, R50. Are you saying that gay men have not evolved in decades and are posting the same crap for years? Do you mean gays of a certain age or all gays?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 15, 2018 7:16 AM |
Easier said than done. Like other posters have said, a lot of women don't have the time or money to please your delicate sensibilities. There's also the fact that not all hair types respond well to traditional styling techniques.
For example, I naturally have coarse & dry/frizzy but fine (Caucasian) big curls which are a headache to style with any styling product cheap or expensive. Even regular 'bespoke' salon treatment goes south on hair like mine. It splits the second I come within 5ft. of a brush and most shampoos/conditioners strip it and leave it dull.
The only way to get my hair to settle is to leave it alone where possible - meaning little-to-no brushing, sparse product, washing it once a week max, keeping steam or water exposure to a minimum, absolutely no flat-irons/dryers. If I don't let my hair do its own thing or I try to fight its nature, it turns into a matted tumbleweed. If I tried some of the crispy Aquanet styles depicted above I think my hair would crack and break clean off my head.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 15, 2018 9:57 AM |
Don't be disingenuous, R50. This thread and easily 100 more have been posted over the years specifically as trollbait.
OP waaaay overplayed his hand with the "women must do what I say they do, while no such demands will ever be made of me because I am a man" replies early on.
And this isn't just about being sexist, it's homophobic. The whole idea of gays being the bitchy friends who know more than women do about style died out about 20 years ago. Most of us moved on. I suggest you consider doing the same.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 15, 2018 2:55 PM |
Us, R59, if gay men don't want to be treated like the bitchy little accessories of straight women, we are not allowed to be critical of them. If we criticize, they will continue to treat us as non-persons with lesser lives, solely here to amuse them, as they have always done.
Talk about people who haven't kept up with the times, but never mind, they have no idea how awful they are to us and don't care. In turn, I feel no compunction about being awful to them. We're just props and a way for them not to do the work or spend the money building up their own site. They'd rather try to take over the Datalounge and turn it into some kind feminist bullshit site. They're so fucking lazy and cheap and so fucking typical. "Oh, forget about doing all that work and spending all that money for 20 years, we'll just take over your site!"
Happily, although they've been desperately trying to destroy it for years, the Datalounge remains the Datalounge, a great site for gay men. Grease fires are ready and waiting for the interfering interlopers.

With declining wages and people having to work longer hours to stay employed, it's going to be a long time before women have the time and spare cash to go to the salon to get their hair set every week.
Which I understand, I really do.
I just have one request for the ladies: If you can't maintain a change of hair color then just live with the natural color, and don't walk around with five inches of roots. It looks so shabby.

Even most women who can afford to do not engage in this archaic activity any more. Weekly sets are for specific cases, but it's mostly older women who still talk about a "rinse and set." Most women wash their hair more than once a week and style their own hair daily.

R79 In 1963 P.L. Travers telephoned Andrews to say 'You're much too pretty [for Poppins], of course, but you've got the nose for it!'.
I remember the description of Julie Andrews having a 'ski nose' was uttered by Gilligan in an episode of 'Gilligan's Island' some time even before 'Sound of Music' was released. So that's 1964.
The 2008 memoirs describes her childhood appearance as "boss-eyed, bucktoothed and bandy", with a large nose and that that "The retroussé nose still surprises".

[R114] be sure to post about your mother in the "was your mother cray?" thread. A mullet and a bowl cut all those years? The mullet is particularly cruel.
My mother used to get drunk and experiment with cutting my hair every few weeks. I grew up thinking I had been an ugly duckling, but recently looked a photos spanning my childhood and realized it was the freaky haircuts.

[quote] Hon, you've got to be firm with them. It's your hair.
Not when they’re holding onto it with a pair of scissors and an electric razor. You’ve got to be verrrrry careful what you say or you’ll wind up looking like Mamie Eisenhower

Hard to believe people actually WANTED their hair to look like this

I think the best look for women was the mid to late 60s bump bouffant look. I wish it would come back (I'm not talking about the huge bouffants though ).

American women were never lovelier than in the 1930s. Hairstyles were usually short, soft, and curly, but tidy. Hats and gloves were usually worn. Make-up as well, but it was minimal.
I prefer the 1930s styles to the 20s and 40s, which I both find rather extreme and less charming.

R117 The ones who refused to grow out of this style are the ones who organically shifted into the "speak to your manager" style.

r117 those fried perms were all over the place back in the day. Look at any high school yearbook. The tragic thing is that many women in more rural areas kept that hideous hairstyle well into the 1990s.

The 1930s and 40s had some classy looks. Sometimes I'll see one dressing and styling that far retro and makes it work.

I've always been partial to the short styles like La Liz has here. Sophia Loren also looked great with a similar short cut.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | December 18, 2018 11:01 AM |
The 'speak to the manager' haircut is one of the most hideous hairstyles ever invented, right up there with the 80s spiral perm and big crusty bangs.

[quote]R52 The only way to get my hair to settle is to leave it alone where possible - meaning little-to-no brushing, sparse product, washing it once a week max, keeping steam or water exposure to a minimum, absolutely no flat-irons/dryers. If I don't let my hair do its own thing or I try to fight its nature, it turns into a matted tumbleweed.
Have you read the CURLY GIRL handbook? I’m sure you have...just wanted to acknowledge I know that living with curly hair can make hair care and styling twice as hard.
Good luck, you brave soul!

I actually think a lot of women will move towards shorter low maintenance cuts. Barbershops will become unisex. Another option will be hair like Jason Momoa's, long but also low maintenance.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | December 19, 2018 5:15 AM |
R124 But they exist nowadays, and not just in womens fashion, look at Timothée Chalamet. Just a bit more easygoing, with more natural looking curls.

Is there an ideal style to create the illusion of a jawline? I have an oldlady peasant face and a recessed chin/rat mouth, and long hair either up (ponytail, chignon, bun, braid) or down loose does nothing for it. I looked at best kind of ok when I had shoulder-length hair done braids close to my head like a Viking and was several years younger & thinner but I don’t think that work work now. Bangs are out as my hair curls/frizzes.

R128, I’d never heard of Victory Rolls. That was a fun post, thanks.
Here’s my Mom, at the link. I guess she’s got a Victory Roll cut of some kind. I would guess this was about 1943. The “dress” was actually just a piece of black velvet that the phorographer had lying around. My twin looks just like her, but with blonde hair.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | December 21, 2018 3:58 AM |
R146 I'm sorry no one has responded with a suggestion to create the illusion of a jawline.
I thought about it for a while but couldn't supply a good suggestion

R124's style is beautiful and would work well today. Love it.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | December 27, 2018 4:47 AM |
R146, you can create an illusion of a more defined jawline with contouring powder. Get a shade darker than your skin and brush it under the post prominent part of your jawline. It will give the look of a shadow which will define the jaw.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | December 27, 2018 4:53 AM |
R146 Jane Fonda in Klute style might help to give the illusion of a little extra fullness around the jaw.

I agree, OP. Also:
When will men stop wearing too-tight jackets, with the stupid cinch button at the belly, and ridiculous too-tight jeans, and go back to beautifully tailored pieces with great fit, and drape, and trouser legs with just the right break at the shoe? That moved with the leg?

Those 1970s wild perms....
So sexy.
People forget: the function of a perm was to pre-set the hair. You shouldn't have to spend time, let alone hours, making it look good..
Women were never sexier than in the disco era, IMHO.

"The "women of rock" hairstyle needs to return."
No, it doesn't. Stevie Nicks permed the hell out of her hair and looked ridiculous. So did Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Their natural hair looked so much better.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 4, 2019 10:01 PM |
Short hair can be a nightmare because you are at the mercy of hairdressers. Short hair has a specific style, specific lines. Medium to long hair doesn't require as much precision.
I have always liked a pageboy or some variation of it. I also loved Grace Kelly's hair.

by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 5, 2019 12:55 AM |
I have a shorter version of this and love it. Like Posh, I have baby features- little nose, eyes and mouth-but sculpted bone structure with high cheekbones and defined jaw. Long, fine hair drags my face down and makes me look old and homeless. No thank-you.
Is this the "tousled" look you hate so much?
by Anonymous | reply 169 | January 5, 2019 1:23 AM |
Listen bitches,if you get the right haircut it wont take an hour to fix it . My 78 year old mother has a great cut that she washes and just brushes until its dry. it look great with minimum of fuss. of course you have to have decent hair. Most women these days look like shit in public. I get that they dont give a fuck and want the world to know it,but then dont run your ass home, eat 3 boxes of girl scout cookies then cry to all your facebook friends about how no man appreciates all you have to offer! The women who do still try,who do their hair, wear a little makeup and a nice outfit get all the men over your yoga pant wearing greasy haired asses.

There's no way that Veronica lake's hairstyle would come back into fashion considering you have you have to pincurl your hair to get that look lol. I guess maybe for a formal event but it's not something that's doable for everyday unless you're dedicated to it

The Louise Brooks bob (actually it's the Colleen Moore bob, but Brooks became more identified with it) is one of the most severe, unattractive hairstyles ever invented but it's considered to be so chic and sexy. Only a woman with a gorgeous face could wear it without looking ridiculous. It's incredibly unflattering on most people.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | January 5, 2019 3:04 AM |
R174 The pin-curled bobs of the 1930s are much more attractive imo

No. Straight men as a rule like long, flowing hair on women. Women wear makeup and sexy clothes to please men, and at least while they’re reasonably young, most will stick with long hair, too.
