FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (1993) extended version

Just watched this version last night and seems very dated.

by Anonymousreply 20November 15, 2018 9:08 PM

What was extended?

by Anonymousreply 1November 14, 2018 8:34 AM

Oops! I meant (1991) release

by Anonymousreply 2November 14, 2018 8:35 AM

It was set in the 1920's, of course, it would seem dated.

I loved this movie! Very 90's in the way that they downplayed the obvious lesbian relationship, but it was a great film.

I still remember when I was an innocent young gayling of 8watching this with my mom and I thought the two main lesbians were just real close friends. I remember thinking how awesome it would be to run away with your closest pal and just live together forever instead of getting married and being lame.

Not OP but I think there was an extra scene between Idgie and Ruth. There was an extra scene of a drunken Idgie sleeping it off at the rundown barhouse.

This is one of my favorite movies. I wish they had been able to be more obvious about the lesbian part but it probably wouldn't have gotten made. I do hate that they chose to end it with a weird scene that, at first, seemed to imply that Ninny was Idgie. It was just the way it was shot and a beat in the script but I know people who hadn't read the book that I've watched it with all thought they were implying that Ninny was the aged Bee Charmer.

I love the Bee Charmer scene. Yes, Ruth, stick your fingers in her honey pot and then lick them off and tell her she's a Bee Charmer while undressing her with your eyes. No gay to see here!

Did they call that version the scissors' cut?

by Anonymousreply 8November 14, 2018 8:57 AM

The average moviegoer saw two close friends. If they had read the book on which the film was based there was no mistaking their relationship but the studio went for mass appeal and box office so in the film version the gals became super close friends.

When I saw this in a theater I do remember a lightbulb moment from the audience when Idgie's mother read the letter from Ruth to Idgie quoting from the Book of Ruth: "...for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried."

It don't make no kind of sense - big ole' ox like Grady won't sit next to a colored child, but he eats eggs - shoot right outta chicken's ass!

There were also extended scenes between Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) and her husband.

What I meant by 'dated' is that this movie would not be nominated for as many Academy awards today. The lesbian relationship had to be subtext, whereas today there would've been a few very steamy sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 11November 14, 2018 9:20 AM

This movie came out before 1993 or the Mandela effect is real.

by Anonymousreply 12November 14, 2018 11:35 AM

^^i see the 1991 correction, sorry.

by Anonymousreply 13November 14, 2018 11:36 AM

I love this movie. One of the best from the 90s. I feel nostalgic by just saying that.

"The lesbian relationship had to be subtext, whereas today there would've been a few very steamy sex scenes."

Most mainstream gay films do NOT have tons of steamy sex scenes

Hated the scene with Chris O’Donnell getting killed on the train track. Chris was my only reason to watch the film in the first place and then this happens. Stupid lesbo movie.

by Anonymousreply 16November 15, 2018 10:36 AM

Chris was so cute in this

LOL, R16! Me too. I literally quit watching after the funeral scene.

Face it lady, we’re younger and faster!

Visited the film cafe a few years back. About an hour south of Atlanta off I-95.
