Junk food that is CRACK
Name a particular junk food that has 100% successfully brought everything together to be compelling, delicious CRACK for you.
Food scientists say today's food companies have figured out magic combinations of size, texture, taste, ingredients, price points, to make certain food irresistible to large consumer markets.
I nominate BBQ potato chips.

BUT! For those of us who don't care about our teeth or pancreas, Tangy Zangys. I am beyond middle age and still chow down on 7-11 candy. Twizzlers, Sour Soothers, Sour Patch Kids, all are manageable (I have no other vices apart from sugar, and yes, I am in a relationship). But show me a sack of Tangy Zangys and I am shitting turquoise and making dental appointments within twelve hours of consumption. I will make a stunning dinner of steamed halibut with spicy miso gravy, Belgian endive dunked into homemade olive tapenade, and pan-roasted root vegetables sprinkled with rosemary and rock salt....then I will hit the corner store for motherfucking Tangy Zangys for dessert. I cannot stop it. I'm going to get bowel cancer thanks to all the dye and sugar. But I SHOVEL this stuff into my mouth by the pawful.

Tostitos tortilla chips with a hint of lime. I also liked sweet chili crisps a local supermarket had but unfortunately they no longer stock and sell them.
Also Salmiak licorice, black and with a high salmiak content. I don't eat it daily but I prefer the high salmiak from Scandinavian and central European countries. The lower salmiak is not bad but it is more sweet and I just eat more of it.

I used to love potato chips but now I buy one of those 1 oz 50 cent bags and I get 3 or 4 portions out of it and sometimes just leave to go stale after one or two chips. I have no idea why I lost my taste for them, no matter what the brand btw. Now cheese puffs are another story. I can't buy anything bigger than the 1 oz. size or I will eat the entire bag. I can't get enough of them. I tried the organic natural ones made with real white cheddar cheese and no MSG and organic corn and those I can put down easily. The fake food ones with the MSG, the ones that turn your fingers and everything you touch orange I'm addicted to, so it has to be the shit in there.

When I was a kid, Twinkies were delicious. The cream or "creme" was fluffy. Suddenly, one day, they changed the creme. Circa 1983. It seemed way more processed, more "fake" and chemical.
Then there was the time Hostess went out of business in 2012. When it came back a couple years later, everything had changed. The names were brought back, but the quality dropped to make the snacks even worse than they were before!

R53, I agree about Congdon's but The Holy Donut up the coast in Portland has them beat. The chocolate sea salt potato donut. Sweet Jesus preserve us. Maybe it's the potato flour, but I can eat their donuts without feeling gross afterwards, which actually makes them even more addictive. Since they're hand made and not packaged in a crinkly bag or something, I don't count them as "junk food." That's the little deal I've made with myself, anyway.

I love to make homemade caramel (I use organic sugar, cream and butter, but it's still sugar cream and butter, so not healthy. I love to have it with maraschino cherries, with the stems and canned whipped cream. No ice cream. I'm not a big fan. Once in a while in the summer I like plain vanilla frozen custard, but usually no ice cream, just the sunday toppings. I like salt the caramel but I also like salted thin pretzels on the side and to drink, Diet Pepsi with lots of lemon juice. I need to have it all in the house, if one item is missing I don't eat any of it or I won't enjoy it.
I also love lots of mozzarella cheese and my homemade marinara sauce melted in the oven, a crustless pizza. I hate pizza crust and most kinds of bread. I do enjoy a nice fresh Saltine with soup though.

I rarely buy them, and only in small bags, but concur Doritos and Cheetos are crack. I treat myself when having a couple beers, as they sell them at my local hangout. I could see them as a serious challenge if I allowed a large bag of them to come into my home.

But after reading this thread, something got the better of me and I ran out to the corner store in this cold in my pajamas and grabbed a bag of white cheddar triangle popcorn thingies. I cracked open a bottle of Negra Modelo and crunched my way through the entire bag of popcorn thingies. Then I happened to turn over the bag and I noticed that the label said one bag contains five servings.

Another vote for Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby. HELL NO to Chunky Monkey (bananas and walnuts?! Seriously! Blegh) — not at all comparable.
And another vote for Tate’s crispy, buttery cookies. Are they regional? I’m surprised it took 104 replies before they were mentioned. I just bought a package of the whole wheat dark chocolate ones. I’ll definitely eat half the package in a moment.
Cheez-Its, either original or white cheddar, are also almost impossible not to eat til the box is empty.
Surprised at the number of mentions of BBQ flavored chips. YUCK! That flavor has never appealed to me, and I don’t know why. It never really tastes like BBQ sauce-covered meats. It seems more like it’s own flavor combo. Heavy on the garlic and onion powder, I presume. Buffalo sauce flavored chips are a little better.
I also don’t get the obsession with Haribo. They seem more like something grade school kids would be into.

[quote]Thank you for writing to us. We're sorry that Fritos Classic Ranch has been discontinued. Please know I'll share your request to bring it back with our sales and marketing teams for any future consideration.
[quote]There are several reasons why a product may be discontinued, but it is usually because there aren't enough fans like you buying it. Sometimes stores stop carrying slower-selling items to make room for other products. When this happens at too many stores, it's difficult to continue making and selling the product.

r276 There was a chip Frito-Lay test marketed in Washington, DC, in 1991-93 that I thought of as being "better than Doritos." They came in a white bag with either a blue or red insert, which corresponded to Plain or Salsa flavor. They were white corn rather than Doritos' yellow corn. They were seriously the most addictive chip I ever ate, but I guess they failed the test marketing process, as they disappeared almost as soon as they had appeared.
I don't remember if they were Doritos or Tostitos or what. Does anyone else remember these?

Aldi is selling cherry stollen, Spekulatius, panettone, pan d'oro, Lebkuchenherzen, Hönigkuchen, and nürnberger Lebkuchen. I eat them in moderation, with coffee or tea and I am glad they sell these only one time a year.

Does anyone remember those little frozen Morton's cinnamon-sugar donuts they sold in the '70s and '80s? Those were crack to me when I was a kid. When I stayed with my grandmother, she would toast them in her little toaster oven and they would be slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Yummy!

R277 Here is a picture of Nacho Cheese Tostitos. I loved them too and I think you and I have had this conversation on DL before. They were lighter than Doritos, so you didn't get lockjaw after a munchies session. I lived in Baltimore up until 1985, BTW. I am intrigued by Doritos Thins, and will have to try them, to the Doritos Thins-lover upthread.

r305, I don't believe Doritos Tortilla Thins have been available since 1994. I see there's something called Tostitos Chipotle Thins, which I plan to try if I can find them. Someone at Frito-Lay also suggested Tostitos Salsa Verde, which I believe I've seen at the store. The word "Thins" does not appear in that title, however.

Geraldine’s cheese straws.
Perfect with a Bloody Mary made with Charleston hot and spicy Bloody Mary mix and garnished with bleu cheese stuffed olives.
I’ll also chime in for Lipton’s onion soup mix dip. Although I prefer plain Wavy Lay’s-they’re sturdier and hold more dip.

Do you live in NYC R302? The farmers market has a stand that sells crumb cake that is at least 75% crumbs. I don't care for it but I always bring it to my friend's house when I visit. They love it. I'm trying super hard not to eat junk food but it's ridiculously difficult. For one thing, it's everywhere. For another thing, I'm totally addicted to all of it - it's crack to me. But it gets expensive (which is good), and it's not conducive to having a decent body (which is also good.) No junk for the past two days and it's insane. Getting sober was easier.

Things I have to consciously avoid when ordering out at casual dining places:
Coke, because diet coke from a fountain tastes like stale battery acid.
French fries. So many places pair it with half the menu. I have to force myself to say “salad, please.”
Any kind of fresh chips, like tortilla chips in an authentic mexican place or house-made potato chips. Truly CRACK.
Crispy and fried chicken in all its forms, including parm.
Cheeseburgers when they’re the best, most fool proof-thing on an otherwise dicey menu (think bar food, diners, unfamiliar places)
Gourmet pizza and “flatbreads,” which are just the same thing.
Adding bacon to burgers, or ordering things because they include bacon.
Appetizers generally. Spinach artichoke dip specifically. Also nachos (loaded high), or anything in a fried won-ton.
Dessert. Don’t get me started.

I vote for Pringles. It's easy to demolish an entire can in short order, not feel full from it and be willing to eat even more because they taste so damn good. For that reason, it's the kind of thing that is better not to buy in the first place.

Chocolate-covered pretzels, which are all the best AND worst things about junk food all rolled into one: sugary, starchy, salty and fatty. And fucking DELICIOUS.
