Nine kings, one photo (1910)

Taken at the funeral gathering for Edward VII of the United Kingdom

(Standing, L–R) King Haakon VII of Norway; Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria; King Manuel II of Portugal; Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany; King George I of Greece; King Albert I of Belgium

(Seated, L–R) King Alfonso XIII of Spain, King George V of the UK (Queen Elizabeth's dad); King Frederik VIII of Denmark

Frederik VIII was the father of Haakon VII, and Kaiser Wilhelm II was the first cousin of both George V and Queen Maud of Norway, who was Haakon's wife and George V's sister—which made Haakon and George V brothers-in-law. George V and Queen Maud’s mother was Alexandra of Denmark, Frederik VIII's sister, so Frederik VIII was also George V's uncle.

George V was Elizabeth II's grandfather, not father.

by Anonymousreply 2November 11, 2018 8:42 PM

Winter is coming.

by Anonymousreply 3November 11, 2018 8:45 PM

Geroge V was a total "proto-Hipster."

by Anonymousreply 4November 11, 2018 8:45 PM

Things were better under the Kaiser.

by Anonymousreply 5November 11, 2018 8:59 PM

Little did they know that in four short years their world would explode.

by Anonymousreply 6November 11, 2018 9:11 PM

I can see them coming down the staircase for Beautiful Girls.

by Anonymousreply 7November 11, 2018 9:14 PM

Not one fuckable guy in that pic.

by Anonymousreply 8November 11, 2018 9:17 PM

Love George’s leather daddy boots

by Anonymousreply 9November 11, 2018 9:17 PM

Where was Kaiser Franz Joseph? Was he too old and frail for such a long journey?

by Anonymousreply 10November 11, 2018 9:18 PM

In May 1910, European royalty gathered in London for the funeral of King Edward VII. Among the mourners were nine reigning kings, who were photographed together in what very well may be the only photograph of nine reigning kings ever taken. Of the nine sovereigns pictured, four would be deposed and one assassinated. Within five years, Britain and Belgium would be at war with Germany and Bulgaria. Only five of the nine monarchies represented in the photo still exist today.

OP / R11 - thanks for the introduction to that site. Lots of interesting photography on there.

by Anonymousreply 12November 11, 2018 9:57 PM

OK well Haakon on Norway looks like she played for us.

Portuguese king is cute

by Anonymousreply 16November 11, 2018 10:38 PM

Sash game on point!

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2018 10:38 PM

What's so odd about it? Caesar was top dog. The King loved him. As for the nine Kings? Bertie didn't love dem hos.

by Anonymousreply 20November 12, 2018 12:06 AM

It's an appropriate day to post this, so thank you, OP. The world before WWI, and the world after, were drastically different. We sometimes forget how quickly our history changes. 'The Proud Tower' by Barbara Tuchman, forever changed my world-view. I'm an American, but I think I developed a tiny bit more sensitivity with our Euro members because of that. I never want to be an Ugly American.

by Anonymousreply 21November 12, 2018 12:26 AM

History will sadly repeat itself.

by Anonymousreply 22November 12, 2018 12:32 AM

Cool picture! I wonder why the czar of Russia is not there. I thought he was related to these guys.

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2018 7:05 PM

All related, all inbred, lots of genetic flaws magnified over the centuries. If you're going to make a rule that only royals could marry royals because of "divine right of kings" passed on genetically, you'd better, by God, have the widest possible gene pool to select from. People marrying first and second cousins for 800 years is not a recipe for physical and mental health.

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2018 7:14 PM

....And a very young Cousin Itt on the table.

R25 and R26 - LMAO

by Anonymousreply 28November 13, 2018 7:29 PM

Their mustache game is fun.

Most of them are sporting a Handlebar. The Kaiser has more of an English. The Danish King has a Chevron.

by Anonymousreply 29November 13, 2018 7:36 PM

George V and the Kaiser are first cousins. Edward VII is George's father, while the Kaiser was Edward's sister Vicky's kid. And then they went to war against one another. Family strife.

by Anonymousreply 30November 13, 2018 7:41 PM

The Russian Emperor (and King George V's apparent twin and doppelgänger) was apparently playing hooky in this pic.

I can tell them apart on close inspection and in colourised photos, but not in solo portraits or B&W pics.

^*that is, playing hooky in the OP's pic.

by Anonymousreply 32November 13, 2018 7:44 PM

They're ridiculous with their medals and sashes and swords, as if any one of them could survive a duel. They look like TGIF waiters with upgraded flash. Albert of Belgium was pretty sexy, though. How funny that a century later, you can walk into any hipster bar or coffee place and find at least one dude with similar facial hair.

[quote] Only five of the nine monarchies represented in the photo still exist today.

Pity they weren't all swept into the dustbin of history where they rightfully belong.

by Anonymousreply 33November 13, 2018 7:45 PM

So, the guy seated in the middle, wearing red , is QE2's grandfather??

by Anonymousreply 34November 13, 2018 7:46 PM

I could always tell them apart quite easily. Different noses, and different eyes/eyebrow shapes. George V had sky blue eyes which the lightness showed in black and white pictures. The only thing similar was the facial hair. Yes, R34.

by Anonymousreply 35November 13, 2018 7:47 PM

Hear, hear, R33.

by Anonymousreply 36November 13, 2018 7:47 PM

True, they weren't identical, R35, but smthg about them looked quite similar. The facial hair too. Makes sense that they were related.

They look nothing alike to me, though their mothers were sisters. Another first cousin of George's was Kaiser Wilhelm who looked nothing like George. Just MO

King George V looks like the belle of the ball in his red uniform. Everyone else is in black - as it's a funeral. But I love how they all accessorised with neon-coloured sashes - so as not to look to glum.

by Anonymousreply 42November 13, 2018 8:05 PM

King Manuel II of Portugal was cute. I think he was pocket-sized.

At R41 George V looks a lot like his son George VI, who was the current queen’s father. What a difference a mustache can make.

[quote] King Manuel II of Portugal was cute. I think he was pocket-sized.

But his sword was massive!

by Anonymousreply 45November 13, 2018 8:09 PM

Many of them were poncy elitist plutocrats, but at least they looked well turned-out.

Now we have Charles nearing the pedestal. It's not even the ears, it's his questioning expression that just seems like he's perpetually lost...

King Manuel II of Portugal

Hubba hubba!

by Anonymousreply 47November 13, 2018 8:33 PM

[quote] King Manuel II of Portugal Hubba hubba

Interestingly he was not a “hubby” during his reign. He only married after the monarchy was dissolved.

by Anonymousreply 48November 13, 2018 8:44 PM

King Manuel was also a fan of music, literature, and art. His marriage produced no children.

by Anonymousreply 49November 13, 2018 8:56 PM

Dearest Nicky. My oldest chum. You know how much you, dear Alix and your lovely girls mean to me. So when I deny you asylum and let you and your family be slaughtered.. Please dearest Nicky don't take it personally.

What was the significance of wearing one's sash over one's right shoulder as opposed to one's left?

by Anonymousreply 59November 14, 2018 3:37 AM

Questionable genetics aside, King George V was strikingly handsome. Little Ceasar was so cute too.

by Anonymousreply 60November 14, 2018 3:43 AM

There’s also a motion picture of either this funeral procession of maybe Queen Victoria’s where the nine Kings march three x three.

by Anonymousreply 61November 14, 2018 4:36 AM

The Kaiser hated Edward VII. Or, was madly jealous of him. Or both.

by Anonymousreply 62November 14, 2018 4:45 AM

Sash Troll, you should talk to the Christmas Moose. He has at least a dozen sashes.

by Anonymousreply 63November 14, 2018 5:11 AM

R53 The vast majority of chivalric order sashes are worn right to left. The blue Order of the Garter sash is one of very few to be worn left to right, and most of the monarchs pictured have been awarded the Garter as a courtesy. The German Emperor is wearing the Order of the Black Eagle, the King of the Belgians is wearing the Order of Leopold.

by Anonymousreply 64November 14, 2018 7:01 AM

Why are those worn by Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria and King Albert I of Belgium worn the opposite of the others?

by Anonymousreply 65November 14, 2018 7:08 AM

Uncut sizemeat!

by Anonymousreply 66November 14, 2018 7:14 AM

R66 Settle down Erna.
