Nine kings, one photo (1910)
Taken at the funeral gathering for Edward VII of the United Kingdom
(Standing, L–R) King Haakon VII of Norway; Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria; King Manuel II of Portugal; Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany; King George I of Greece; King Albert I of Belgium
(Seated, L–R) King Alfonso XIII of Spain, King George V of the UK (Queen Elizabeth's dad); King Frederik VIII of Denmark
Frederik VIII was the father of Haakon VII, and Kaiser Wilhelm II was the first cousin of both George V and Queen Maud of Norway, who was Haakon's wife and George V's sister—which made Haakon and George V brothers-in-law. George V and Queen Maud’s mother was Alexandra of Denmark, Frederik VIII's sister, so Frederik VIII was also George V's uncle.

George V was Elizabeth II's grandfather, not father.

In May 1910, European royalty gathered in London for the funeral of King Edward VII. Among the mourners were nine reigning kings, who were photographed together in what very well may be the only photograph of nine reigning kings ever taken. Of the nine sovereigns pictured, four would be deposed and one assassinated. Within five years, Britain and Belgium would be at war with Germany and Bulgaria. Only five of the nine monarchies represented in the photo still exist today.

What's so odd about it? Caesar was top dog. The King loved him. As for the nine Kings? Bertie didn't love dem hos.

It's an appropriate day to post this, so thank you, OP. The world before WWI, and the world after, were drastically different. We sometimes forget how quickly our history changes. 'The Proud Tower' by Barbara Tuchman, forever changed my world-view. I'm an American, but I think I developed a tiny bit more sensitivity with our Euro members because of that. I never want to be an Ugly American.

Cool picture! I wonder why the czar of Russia is not there. I thought he was related to these guys.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 13, 2018 7:05 PM

All related, all inbred, lots of genetic flaws magnified over the centuries. If you're going to make a rule that only royals could marry royals because of "divine right of kings" passed on genetically, you'd better, by God, have the widest possible gene pool to select from. People marrying first and second cousins for 800 years is not a recipe for physical and mental health.

Their mustache game is fun.
Most of them are sporting a Handlebar. The Kaiser has more of an English. The Danish King has a Chevron.

George V and the Kaiser are first cousins. Edward VII is George's father, while the Kaiser was Edward's sister Vicky's kid. And then they went to war against one another. Family strife.

The Russian Emperor (and King George V's apparent twin and doppelgänger) was apparently playing hooky in this pic.
I can tell them apart on close inspection and in colourised photos, but not in solo portraits or B&W pics.

They're ridiculous with their medals and sashes and swords, as if any one of them could survive a duel. They look like TGIF waiters with upgraded flash. Albert of Belgium was pretty sexy, though. How funny that a century later, you can walk into any hipster bar or coffee place and find at least one dude with similar facial hair.
[quote] Only five of the nine monarchies represented in the photo still exist today.
Pity they weren't all swept into the dustbin of history where they rightfully belong.

I could always tell them apart quite easily. Different noses, and different eyes/eyebrow shapes. George V had sky blue eyes which the lightness showed in black and white pictures. The only thing similar was the facial hair. Yes, R34.

True, they weren't identical, R35, but smthg about them looked quite similar. The facial hair too. Makes sense that they were related.

King George V looks like the belle of the ball in his red uniform. Everyone else is in black - as it's a funeral. But I love how they all accessorised with neon-coloured sashes - so as not to look to glum.

R53 The vast majority of chivalric order sashes are worn right to left. The blue Order of the Garter sash is one of very few to be worn left to right, and most of the monarchs pictured have been awarded the Garter as a courtesy. The German Emperor is wearing the Order of the Black Eagle, the King of the Belgians is wearing the Order of Leopold.
