NEW Attorney General - he's WORSE, much worse.
Sessions has been forced out as Attorney General by Tr*mp. This may sound like good news to you, but it isn't. The acting AG is Matthew Whitaker--the dude pictured here.
He is an evangelical dominionist--one of the radicals now all over the administration who believe Christians must control every branch of government, the media, and the rest of the "Seven Mountains" of civic life. He has said his criterion for approving judicial nominees is whether they are Christians and would enforce "biblical justice."
And he has called the Mueller investigation, of which he is now in charge, a "witch hunt." Instead, he has said Democratic legislators should be investigated as collaborators with foreign governments, following Tr*mp's favorite tactic of saying "I didn't do it, YOU DID" whenever called out for doing something bad.
The aim is not just to kill investigations into Tr*mp, and not only to fan the fury of "the base," but to continue to destroy what remains of the American public's faith in democratic civic government with bothsiderist disgust, and replace the midterm blue wave with universal cynicism and disengagement by the time we get to 2020.

Someone needs to make sure no new nominations will be voted on until the new Congress takes over after Jan. 1. If that can happen, whoever Trump nominates as AG will have to get at least 5 democrat votes in favor in order to get through, since the GOP will only 55 votes. I can't see that happening especially with this filthy racist scumbag. I doubt he'd even get all the republicans to vote for him.

Some perspective:
[quote]Folks, let’s take a deep breath and look at what’s before us. Trump is freaking out b/c he’s cornered. Firing Sessions and placing a dickweed in his stead is not going to work for several reasons. The first being it appears to be in violation of the law 28 USC 508. Under the statute, it appears Rod Rosenstein may be Acting Attorney General. Regardless, Mueller and Rosenstein have been fully prepared for this eventuality. I promise you they have countermeasures. We will probably see many indictments unsealed in the coming days. These indictments have been around for some time and are ready to go. Trump knows that once the new Congress begins its session, he’s done. Not so much from impeachment but more from the investigations which will ensue. Nunes will lose his chairmanship to Schiff, Nadler will probably chair judiciary and waters will chair ways and means. The amount of justified pain Trump will endure from these investigations will help end his presidency and he knows it. All Trumps done is speed up this process. Have faith, Patriots. We will win this.

It's not that straightforward. There are two sets of rules that apply: one if Sessions was fired and the other if Sessions resigned. Because Sessions officially "resigned," even if he did so at Trump's request, the second set of rules applies and Whitaker is indeed the interim A.G. for a period of 240 days or something like that.
Now this can go to court and a Judge can rule that a resignation under duress is indeed being fired, in which case the first set of rules applies but I'd be willing to bet that the Supreme Court overturns it and gives Trump the benefit of the doubt.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | November 9, 2018 1:31 AM

I don't know if this applies here but past administrations have secured signed but undated resignation letters from their cabinet officers on their first day. Then it's just a matter of filling in the blank and informing the unwanted official his resignation has been accepted.

Whitaker apparently advised trump on how to weaponize the Justice Department to investigate Trump's adversaries.
[quote]Whitaker was an outspoken critic of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe before he became the chief of staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions in September 2017. That has rightfully raised concerns that Whitaker might now attempt to sabotage Mueller’s investigation. But new information suggests that Whitaker — while working for Sessions — advocated on behalf of, and attempted to facilitate, Trump’s desire to exploit the Justice Department and FBI to investigate the president’s enemies.
...
[quote]But two other people with firsthand information about the matter told me that Whitaker, in his conversations with the president, presented himself as a vigorous supporter of Trump’s position and “committed to extract as much as he could from the Justice Department on the president’s behalf.”
...
[quote]Whitaker also counseled the president in private on how the White House might be able to pressure the Justice Department to name a special counsel to investigate not only allegations of FBI wrongdoing but also Hillary Clinton. Trump wanted the Justice Department to investigate the role that Clinton purportedly played, as secretary of state, in approving the Russian nuclear energy agency’s (Rosatom) purchase of a US uranium mining company.

If he wasn't privy to classified information that Mueller has because of Session's recusal then his only reason for being appointed is to find out as much as he can and pass it along to Kushner and the Trumps before he gets the boot on constitutional grounds. He can do a tremendous amount of damage in a short period of time. What I really don't get is why the sane among them in the Republican party continue to stay silent and inert when they will have to live in this country along with everyone else who is getting fucked. And there will be consequences when the Dems open up all of the investigations into shady behavior, dark money, collusion with a hostile foreign government, or governments, and the usual self-serving back room deals. A pointy reckoning is in their futures and all that money they have scammed from the majority of Americans won't save them. Might keep them out of jail for a while but not forever.
