Was Jordan Knight of NKOTB being groomed to be the Justin Timberlake of that group?
I just stumbled upon this video from 1991 of Jordan performing his solo song from the groups “Step By Step” album. He performed the song with his shirt open and a wind machine.
I was born in the late 80s, so I was too young for them, but was Jordan being groomed to be the JT or Beyoncé of that group? By their 3rd album it was his face they used most to promote, his vocals were mostly the lead throughout, they even gave him a solo song for their 3rd album (similar to what they did to Timberlake on NSYNCs 3rd album “Celebrity”) and would have him perform it without the other 4 guys on stage at all.
My cousin said they wanted to bring him solo after that album cause he was so popular but his anxiety kept him from doing it and instead he wanted time off. That time led to them going on hiatus for a few years and then years later he finally went solo, when no one cared anymore. But idk if this is true.

R1 “Gone” where it was basically a solo with the other guys doing background vocals for him. You could see by that point he was being pushed to the forefront. Even giving him a video for the song and making it a single.
R2 Lance Bass doesn’t even do music. He’s like a media personality now.

That describes most pop acts - start with teens/tweens and try to appeal to older with the second/third album (if they get that far). And the subtext of the latter part is like with most groups: "We don't see it for any of these people as individuals, so let's put them together and see if Y can provide what X lacks etc."

In the early 1990s, Knight was linked to teen pop singer Tiffany; both denied dating at the time. In 2009, the National Enquirer published an article from his ex-boyfriend which outed him as gay. In a January 2011 interview, Tiffany stated that he is gay, which he then confirmed, saying "I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay." In a statement on the New Kids on the Block blog, he added "Apparently the prerequisite to being a gay public figure is to appear on the cover of a magazine with the caption 'I am gay'. I apologize for not doing so if this is what was expected!" Knight has been in a relationship with Harley Rodriguez as of 2008. The two participated in the 26th season of the reality competition series The Amazing Race, which aired on CBS in early 2015, where they placed 9th. The two became engaged when Knight proposed on November 15, 2016 while they vacationed in Africa.

I never thought Jordan was being groomed for solo success. NKOTB was one of those groups where they really needed to stick together because on their own they just were not as dynamic. If anything, I thought it might be Joey since he was the youngest and seemed to get most of the screams.
Having said that, Donnie and Joey actually formed pretty good acting careers, especially Donnie. Joey was actually really funny in The Heat as Melissa McCarthy's brother.
In the late 90s both Joey and Jordan had hit singles, likely being able to capitalize on the renaissance of teen pop in the '90s thanks to N*Sync, Britney and BSB. But they were not able to ride the wave of the renaissance.
However, you've got to hand it to NKOTB. They still look good and they're very smart to tour based on nostalgia. The boat cruises, the '80s themed tours with Tiffany and Debbie Gibson et al. They're very successful at it.

r104 they started on the Urban Charts, and were not charting on the pop charts. Their sound started off as urban. Remember, they were the white version of New Edition... it was for the second album that their producers and label realized they could be something way bigger, and they switched to more pop/urban and made Jordan the lead. After that they shot to the top. By their 3rd album they were full blown pop.

I vaguely recall reading an article in the Star supermarket tabloid around 1990 when NKOTB were popular. It was billed as a shocking expose on how the New Kids weren't as wholesome as their image. The article was about their backstage debauchery, including sex with (female) groupies. If I'm remembering it correctly, the photo that accompanied the article was a photo of Mark Wahlberg (who wasn't one of the New Kids but would hang out with Donnie and the rest of them) posing totally nude backstage, but the tabloid superimposed a giant star over his dick. This was probably a year or two before he became "Marky Mark" (and before the Internet took off). For many years afterward, I hoped that the uncensored photo would surface on the Internet.

r53 Lou wasn't responsible for NKOTB that was Maurice Starr. All of those groups were in part formed by their managers, but some members were discovered or recommended by other group members themselves: Kevin from BSB brought his cousin Brian into the group, Justin and his mom found Lance and convinced him to join, NSYNC, Donnie knew some of the members of NKOTB from school and had them join the band etc.

In most boy bands BSB and after, there's one or two who actually can sing very well, and then the rest are just kind of there for show. they can sing a bit, but they're not the strong voices.
Justin T. really CAN sing, but the rest of N*SYNC (except for JC) couldn't sing lead if their lives depended on it.

The hottest one with most presence is always plucked out to be the front and end up with a solo career. The others try to follow but never live up to that ones. Or non live up to it b
NKOTB= Jordan and Joey
NSYNC = Justin and JC
98Degrees = Nick Lachey
BSB = Nick Carter
OTown = Ashley Parker Angel
I liked Ashley’s solo single, though. He was more pop punk rock.

Ashley Parker Angel was actually the Weakest singer of that group. Supposedly the other guys hated him. He wasn’t even originally picked, someone else was. They dropped out and then someone else was picked, and then Lou decided to fire that 5th person and went with APA because the band needed “the face” and “the baby” of the group that would be a teen heartthrob, like Justin and Nick Carter were.

By the time their 3rd album came Jordan was clearly the one they had in mind to make the most $$$ off of. I mean even during their concerts he was always put front and center, and they had to just stand in place, dance in place and sing back up for him while he got to run around and roam the stage in freedom.
Jordan had gorgeous thick dark hair.

Ashley Parker Angel had a reality show later on MTV or VH1 or something, when I was young. Him and his baby mama. I remember one scene where he had to go food shopping and didn't really know what to do. And another scene where one of the guys in his band was working construction - and Ashley, too, I think. There used to be a time when teen heartthrobs went away after their shelf life was over. And other flashes in the pan. But now I don't know if anyone noticed - this never happens any more. Now there are at least conventions for so many ex-TV shows, so there's money to be made. Charging for m&g's, photo ops and autographs. At best the teen sensations get a new life, like the NKOTB/BSB shows (aka, NKOTBSB). Too bad someone like Jamie Walters couldn't have hung on a little longer (I think he's an EMT now - which is cool) ...but really no one's career actually dies now. And with Quentin Tarantino, no former movie stars get left behind either. We no longer get to gloat about all the has-beens.

JC's album flopped because he went for an '80s sound with an "I'm a sex maniac who can't get enough pussy" theme. If he had released an album with songs more in keeping with his NSync style and image, he might have been able to have a mildly successful solo career, at least for a few years.

I though wearing commitment rings and calling your partner "husband" was cute when gay marriage was not legal and a possibility for gay couples. But I think it is just ridiculous now. [quote] I meant at the time - no WHITE boy bands were charting on the Urban Charts. NKOTB and George Michael were getting urban charts and some of the black artists were pissed.
I dont recall NKOTB receiving airplay on black radio. When did that happen? Which songs? I think black audiences generally disdained them because they were created by the guy who produced New Edition and enjoyed greater commercial success than NE.
In the early days, George Michael was embraced by black music fans. His early songs were played on black radio as if he were a black artist. His videos were played on BET. That changed when his music became more white and gay ("Listen Without Prejudice")

R226 their market was to black audiences at first. The original “Please Dont Go Girl” Video even had them in a mostly black school with a “black” love interest. The sound of their first album was more R&B. It was with their second album they went more Bubblegum Pop.

People forget Joey was younger than the rest of the group. He was only like 11 or 12 when he was found and placed in the group. He was also bullied by the rest of them and almost quit daily until they calmed down and let him know they’re just messing with him because they like him. His mother said he would come home crying daily because of the bullying.
The other 4 knew each other in real life and formed the group. There was originally a different 5th member that was later dropped by the creator of the band because he wanted someone younger and from a different background within Boston.
The other 4 are from poor areas of Boston, from poor families. Jordan said they would wear sneakers with holes in the bottom to school. Joey is from an Upper Middle Class area of Boston, and was not used to what the other 4 were, as he had not been exposed to what they had been.
Joey is only 47 now.

Jordan talked about growing up in a working class mixed neighborhood in Boston. His family was a large Episcopal minster's family and his parents ran a foster home. One of his adopted brothers is black and he talked about growing up when there were racial tensions in Boston. His black brother got called the "n word" in the streets and it hurt Jordan very deeply. But what I don't get is why did Jordan and the rest of NKOTB never publicly condemned Mark Wahlberg's racist antics especially when you have Donnie who will always give credit to "New Edition" and talk about how he and the rest of New Kids admired black culture. Jordan was a b-boy, breakdancing on the subway and Donnie was a freestyle rapper. That said, New Edition seem cool with New Kids. Also Jordan doing a duet album with Nick Carter is weird, Nick has a raspy baby doll voice while Jordan has a deeper voice.

This duet is so weird. Sounds like a Robin Thicke/Justin Timberlake reject song. Nick can't sing. Who's idea was for these two to make a joint album? They aren't Toni and Babyface.

Nick Carter required lessons on how to sit on a stool. This is not a play on words. He didn't know how to sit on a stool, or how to get on or off one. He couldn't learn it in a day either. It took professional choreographers and coaching. He's a lucky bitch because he's one of the top 10 stupidest celebrities of all time. Zero talent. Sit Nick.

Nick and JT debut solo albums came out weeks apart. People though Nick would be JT’s biggest competition but he flopped so bad.

Only AJ and maybe Kevin had a bigger shot at solo success but neither seemed interested. Nick cannot sing well, or dance well, or has any soul in his singing. He has no fashion sense either. MTV did push his solo album but nobody wanted to hear an outdated sounding pop rock album with songs like "Miss America".
JT's debut had a strong R&B and hip-hop production courtesy of The Neptunes and many danceable tracks. JT could dance and had that cocky white boy swag, it was inevitable, he would outperform Nick.

Kevin? Are you serious? We had the thinnest voice of them all. The only thing he had going for him was he could be Eric Hanson's porn twin.

Kevin was good-looking and charming. JT also had a thin voice too but he still took off. It was the late 90s/early 2000s and J. Lo, Mandy and Britney were a thing too and Janet and Madonna still enjoyed success. So Kevin had a shot on his looks alone and could have relied on studio help.

New Edition was smart to get rid of Maurice Starr. Their music afterwards vastly improved. Johnny Gill added some more grown vocals. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were a major upgrade for production. Heart Break was one of the greatest R&B/New Jack Swing albums of all time. Bobby Brown's solo career was impressive and Don't Be Cruel is a classic.
New Kids stuck with Starr who kept writing bubblegum stuff that they were too old to be singing. A lot of their music didn't age well at all at all even for 1980s standards. They finally ditched Starr for Teddy Riley for their 1994 album Face The Music. Major upgrade in production but it was too late as their fans grew up and moved on.

I think it would have been hard for Jordan to go solo. New Kids were considered lame and derivative. Bobby Brown was able to break into solo because he had that cocky street appeal. Jordan was a meek church boy in comparison.
JT had the benefit of dating Britney, NSYNC being hot on the R&B charts and getting features.

Bobby Brown would be a better comparison as NKOTB was the white New Edition. But Jordan wasn't as confident or cool as Bobby. Jordan was a shy church boy. Donnie was analogous to Bobby but his younger brother Mark eclipsed him. Technically Mark counts as a solo success since he was in NKOTB for a year before they released their debut album.

I think Maurice Starr created NKOTB just to spite New Edition and prove his theory he could take a bunch of white boys have them sing black music and be successful. He was right but he never set them up for long-term success and likely never considered investing in solo careers. He wrote extemely commercial fluff songs and was stealing money from them. The Jacksons, NKOTB, Take That,, Westlife and Backstreet Boys are the few boy bands were majority of the members were attractive. The Beatles were never good-looking, The Osmonds were weird looking and NSYNC was especially ugly except JC and Joey. New Edition was pretty average looking except for Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant. One Direction only had one legitimately attractive member Zayn.

New Edition and Boyz II Men are the only ones who had music that adults loved to listen to. NKOTB had a lot of embarrassing songs that are cringe and extremely too 1980s. They needed better writers and it's not a shock they were so derided in their day that even MTV didn't pay them much attention. NE lucked out after firing Maurice because he would have ran them into the ground with his shitty songwriting and producing skills. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was a major set up as Heartbreak was one of the best 80s R&B albums and Johnny Gill's sexy vocals were much better than Bobby's non-singing. NKOTB's Face the Music however was an improvement to their 80s stuff but it flopped as their fame was over by 1994.
I think Backstreet's debut is very listenable as it was more R&B and they kinda sounded like a white Jodeci in some songs. However Millennium was more poppish and it probably alienated their black fans once they released Black and Blue. NSYNC were mostly singles artists but they had a lot of fun party songs and Celebrity was a strong pop album.

Jordan Knight could not have competed with Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson and George Michael. And when he tried to go solo in the late 90s past his prime, he could not compete with Usher, Maxwell or D'Angelo and you already had BSB, NSYNC and Eminem for the white boys copying black culture. Joey McIntyre is not an R&B singer at all, he is a Broadway/oldtime-y pop singer.

This 1991 MTV interview with Jordan explains it all. He basically said he put the well-being of the group before his own. He wasn't interested in going solo and abandoning the others. He seemed protective especially of his brother Jonathan who I think he knew was gay. The interview cuts off when he talks about his black adopted brother being a victim of racist attacks in Boston and how it traumatized him.
