My vote goes to DL fav Jessica Chastain's dress from the 2013 Oscars (it's Alexander McQueen). So gorgeous! But somehow this dress ended on quite a few worst-dressed lists that year.
What's your all-time favorite red carpet dress?

This thread reminds me of the Bob Mackie thread with a link to an interview with him. He talked about the difference between fashion and costume. Looking a the photos here, I think I finally understand the difference between the two. The dresses I like look comfortable and flattering to the actress. There are other outfits that just call attention to themselves, the actress is, essentially, a hanger for the fabric. I'm not fan of that approach to dressing someone. The Kate Winslet photo particularly attractive.

You can rarely find actresses posing on the red carpet with their dresses pre-1990's. They all had the good sense to wear furs, shawls or jackets because it was so darn cold. This "posing on the red carpet" in your strapless dress when it's 60 degrees outside is a relatively new phenomenon and just narcissistic crap.
Here is Lauren Hutton, wearing a formal gown but wearing a fur to keep her body warm.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | November 19, 2018 3:43 AM |
I do miss the good old days of red carpet fashion, when celebrities wore stuff that flattered them or which reflected their own taste, instead of being paid to wear whatever a designer wants to sell. Red carpets were a lot more fun before they became an industry, back in the day nobody took any interest except us old queens in training.
Remember when Joanne Woodward sewed her own gown? It's actually a pretty cool schmata, and she said she did all the embroidery herself.

But those shorts do look ridiculous, R120. You still have young women who take risks with their outfits and sometimes fall flat on their faces, eg. Gaga or Juliet Lewis with her hair, either because they want to be noticed or because they consider mainstream good taste too boring. There was the time Jennifer Lopez wore the sheer dress and you could clearly see her nipples. I assume it was the Oscars. Then there was the time Gwyneth Paltrow wore the droopy unflattering top with the black skirt.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | November 19, 2018 5:26 AM |

I'm sorry, R274, and every other person who's posted a picture of a white woman in bright yellow...
Bright yellow does NOT flatter white women.
If they wear bright yellow the color overwhelms them and they look faded, the dress wears them rather than vice versa, and no amount of makeup can help.

What sets Jolie apart from the rest is that she's "The Natural". Her gowns and pants suits seem to have emerged from her skin to adorn her for the moment and seem of little moment to her, because, is a bird showing off when it flies? I know, I know - I'll give myself a "Mary"!
Except for Fonda and Rihanna, Jolie doesn't have that amateur aura of everybody else pictured in this thread, that is the "dressed up", temporary, Prom Night look.
Joan Rivers was right when she, without joking, commented about Jolie's Red Carpet appearances on "Fashion Police" - "This what a star looks like". (Iirc, that comment may have been about the gown at r295)
And, from decades in the business, Rivers had seen them all.
Say what you will about AJ, but man, she's in a class by herself when it comes to STAH.

R128 Wow.....i've never seen that one.
I definitely remember JLo's dress with the see through top. I couldn't believe she wore it to the Oscars. I thought "How trashy." I used to watch "Fashion Television" with Jeanne Beker so I've seen plenty of runway shows where the models wore sheer blouses or dresses. A runway show is one thing - it's supposed to be cutting edge and the designer is trying to get attention from the press, but I didn't think a woman would actually go dressed like that to a public event. Sorry JLo, I don't want a clear view of your nude breasts.

I agree, R335. I posted the unflattering Meryl photos upthread. She looks lovely in the silver sequins, and the B&W pantsuit is flattering.
I think she is a serious actress who is only interested in costume informing character in her work. I don't think she gives a fig for fashion or design or even vanity outside of that.
That's fine. Other great actresses (Bette Davis, for example) have been that way.
But that means she needs a good stylist to help pull her together for public appearances. Because, while she's still a lovely woman of a certain age, her personal taste is frightfully, atrociously bad.
by Anonymous | reply 337 | November 23, 2018 3:54 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 338 | November 23, 2018 4:07 AM |
Streep doesn't have the figure that colleagues of the same age have (Fonda and Mirren), she's not svelte any more and she's heavier. This dress downplays her heaviness, although I'd change color to dark burgundy or navy.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | November 23, 2018 4:10 AM |
I think Streep has a quirky, offbeat, "artsy" sense of style. She's probably gotten enough criticism over the years that now she conforms to what's considered conventionally beautiful. She really is a mess in your pic at R338.
by Anonymous | reply 340 | November 23, 2018 4:49 AM |
... although the outfit in R337 isn't quirky or artsy. It's very unsophisticated.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | November 23, 2018 4:54 AM |
R337's dress is from 1984, before people started taking the red carpet so seriously, so we should give it a pass.
One of my fave Meryl looks was from the 2012 GG. It wasn't anything special but at least it was different and a bit more edgy from the crap she usually wears.

by Anonymous | reply 378 | November 29, 2018 12:59 AM |
I'm not one of Lens's haters, but I do suspect her of being someone who deliberately dresses badly for the red carpet, because she'd rather be criticized than ignored.
Because even a big gal can look fab in red-carpet fashion if she tries, look at Octavia Spencer or Queen Latifah! But of course looking that good when you don't have a model's figure takes good taste and self-awareness.
