Never liked her, She had a kind of attitude that was unappealing

She has won the triple crown of acting Emmy-Oscar and Tony Awards. One of the few actresses to be a double Best Actress Oscar winner.

by Anonymousreply 2October 23, 2018 9:44 PM

Brilliant actress who gave up her acting career to be one of the hardest working MPs in Parliament. Probably too intelligent for Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 3October 23, 2018 9:51 PM

She's amazing. I'm thrilled that I got to see her in Three Tall Women. She definitely seems like someone who loves to act, but finds the business of being a star and Hollywood too superficial and dull to pursue full time. Gotta respect her for that.

by Anonymousreply 4October 23, 2018 9:53 PM

Tell us, OP, what type of cunt is Glenda Jackson?

by Anonymousreply 5October 23, 2018 9:56 PM

Glenda Jackson? I thought that picture was Ian McKellen in drag!

by Anonymousreply 6October 23, 2018 10:06 PM

In 1974 I saw Bette Davis when she was touring the country with her one woman show. An audience member asked her if there were any current actresses she liked, and Bette immediately said, "Glenda Jackson."

by Anonymousreply 7October 23, 2018 10:46 PM

Her ELIZABETH R taught me what great acting is all about. I mean, I had seen great performances, but the entire series is built around her and I had never seen such nuance and bravado. She was able to brilliantly play the monarch from a teen to death.

Her real talent lay in the fact she could do it all, public entertainer to public servant...and be brilliant all the way down the line, doff your caps to her!

by Anonymousreply 11October 23, 2018 11:41 PM

It doesn't make her a better actress because she refuses to do her neck. Really, at least wear a scarf, a choker, or a turtleneck. Then go emote.

by Anonymousreply 12October 23, 2018 11:56 PM

Two wonderful performances in a lovely film.....

[quote]Brilliant actress who gave up her acting career to be one of the hardest working MPs in Parliament.

Really? What did she achieve?

All I ever saw her do was attack the Tories.

by Anonymousreply 15October 24, 2018 12:01 AM

Is OP's photo what Erna looks like in daylight?

by Anonymousreply 16October 24, 2018 12:02 AM

Love her!

by Anonymousreply 17October 24, 2018 12:09 AM

^^ she's a real gay fave for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 18October 24, 2018 12:10 AM

Got to meet her while she was doing "Three Tall Women", she was a hoot and very warm and friendly to her fans.

One of the true greats. And I found her absolutely beautiful once upon a time. "Handsome" might be the better word. Either way... loved her and her work.

A minority opinion, but she was wonderful in a Touch of Class. Not Oscar worthy perhaps, but certainly nomination worthy.

The scene that won her a second Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 36October 24, 2018 12:45 AM

Wow, she didn't age well, not that she was a great beauty, but those wrinkles?!! I gather she was a heavy smoker or a boozer? Still is doing both?

She's 82, two years younger than one of her former co-stars George Segal and he looks fairly good for his age. They were in A Touch of Class together. George is currently on the hit TV series, The Goldbergs.

Can you imagine Trump trying speak that coherently and at such a great length without a prompter?

by Anonymousreply 44October 24, 2018 5:19 AM

R13 That needs a Blu Ray release NOW!

by Anonymousreply 45October 24, 2018 5:32 AM

Should have had a few more Oscar nominations: The Music Lovers, Salome's Last Dance, Stevie. One of my top favourite three actresses of all time.

by Anonymousreply 46October 24, 2018 5:35 AM

She went starkers in "The Music Lovers", Ken Russell's really bizarre film about Tschaikovsky with his wife going stark raving mad, stark nakedly at times.

She's great in "Women in Love", but Tatum O'Neal should have won Best Actress the year of "A Touch of Class" instead of supporting.

by Anonymousreply 47October 24, 2018 5:35 AM

Glenda is great in "Women in Love", that is.

by Anonymousreply 48October 24, 2018 5:35 AM

[quote]She doesn't wear a lick of make-up.

Makeup cannot hide deep wrinkles or, in younger women, coarse or acne scarred skin. Heavy makeup actually makes wrinkles and bad skin look more pronounced!

by Anonymousreply 49October 24, 2018 5:41 AM

[quote]Can you imagine Trump trying speak that coherently and at such a great length without a prompter?

Even with a prompter, Trump is completely incoherent! 😂😂😂😂

You can also tell he has no idea WTF he's saying!

by Anonymousreply 50October 24, 2018 5:44 AM

There is a TV production of "Strange Interlude", the crazy O'Neill play she did in NY, but I've never seen it. Did any one see her in the play?

by Anonymousreply 51October 24, 2018 5:46 AM

R31 Yes, I love that adaptation of The Boy Friend. The kind of bonkers, almost hallucinatory film that Ken Russell loved to direct, but with classic tuneful musical material. Exquisite design, the scene where they dance on the giant record player is perfect, and Glenda was fun in her small role. She's not the warmest actress but could still do comedy and just radiates pure hard talent. Never cared about her reputation, fame, her appearance or the media. Just delivering great thoroughbred performances. A proto Judy Davis.

by Anonymousreply 52October 24, 2018 5:51 AM

Have loved her most of my life and can't wait to see her in "Lear!"

by Anonymousreply 53October 24, 2018 6:17 AM

Love love love love love love love. Love. Glenda Jackson has no equal. Please, dear god, let this woman find a few decent film roles before she dies.

And yes, she looks a lot like Sir Ian in OP's photo. Doesn't matter, she's a glorious wreck.

by Anonymousreply 54October 24, 2018 6:55 AM

Oh to see this on a big screen again, r52!

by Anonymousreply 55October 24, 2018 1:48 PM

I think she’s truly one of the greats. And has never cared about glamour or the bullshit Of Hollywood. Has always kept it real. She’s only shown up for one of her major awards and that was the Tony back in June.

by Anonymousreply 56October 24, 2018 1:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 61October 24, 2018 2:12 PM

She was the greatest Hedda Gabler I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 62October 24, 2018 2:25 PM

It’s so refreshing to see an actor grow old gracefully. She actually looks SO much better than all those people who have had work done.

by Anonymousreply 63October 24, 2018 3:48 PM

She's no Maggie Smith!

by Anonymousreply 64October 24, 2018 11:58 PM

Oh my god, imagine if Glenda had played the Charlotte Rampling role in 45 Years... she would have bagged her third Oscar for sure. And they probably would have tweaked the script a bit for her to have a major flip out or two.

by Anonymousreply 65October 25, 2018 12:02 AM

That 45 years was awful and whatsisname could barely remember his lines. A very BAD FILM.

by Anonymousreply 66October 25, 2018 1:16 AM

I thought it was a gripping film r66, but with Glenda it would have been even better.

by Anonymousreply 67October 25, 2018 2:04 AM

I don't want to be macabre but isn't it dangerous for someone of Glenda's age to do an arduous stage production of King Lear for several months? Maybe she's aware of that and would like nothing better than to die on the job... it would be a hell of a way to go.

by Anonymousreply 68October 25, 2018 2:04 AM

Glenda already played Lear in London so she knows what she's in for.

by Anonymousreply 69October 25, 2018 2:08 AM

[quote]I thought it was a gripping film [R66],

Can't have seen the same film. Gripping was the last thing it was. It was tiring.

by Anonymousreply 70October 25, 2018 5:14 AM

Would loved to have seen her in more stage productions. Feel blessed to have seen her (and Mona W.) in the original "Stevie". She's simply an exceptional human being, whatever she does.

by Anonymousreply 71October 25, 2018 7:39 AM

Does old Glenda need to have her Lear lines fed to her via earpiece? Just asking.

by Anonymousreply 72October 25, 2018 1:55 PM

Glenda is magnificent. She doesn't use earpieces, r72. I, too, hope she does a few more films. I've never seen any other actor walk away from a successful career as an actress and then pick it up after over 30 years like she'd never stopped.

by Anonymousreply 73October 25, 2018 2:20 PM

Agreed, R62, she is the best Hedda ever.

As someone who can't stand George Segal, she made him bearable in A Touch of Class.

by Anonymousreply 74October 25, 2018 4:14 PM

What an interesting choice in the clip at R36 to sit down as she escalates her tirade against the Segal character.

by Anonymousreply 75October 25, 2018 5:31 PM

I liked her in the two films she did with Walter Matthau: House Calls and Hopscotch.

by Anonymousreply 76October 25, 2018 5:48 PM

I'm still waiting to hear what she achieved with her "political career".

by Anonymousreply 77October 25, 2018 10:03 PM

R50 sure, but he's still the president of USA. That goes to show you.

by Anonymousreply 81October 25, 2018 10:21 PM

That goes to show what, R81? He is an anomaly in the western world of politics, for sure, not a rule. it's still better to be an educated (self-taught or otherwise), intelligent, thoughtful person in life.

by Anonymousreply 82October 25, 2018 10:28 PM

Hear you go R62. One of my favorite (but rarely seen) Jackson performances.

by Anonymousreply 83October 25, 2018 10:31 PM

Who cares about fucking politics, r77? It's what she achieved as an actress that we care about.

r78, "Hopscotch" wasn't trash.

by Anonymousreply 84October 25, 2018 10:33 PM

R43 she was very right. I wonder what she thinks about Brexit now and the fact that the 'Thatcher times' are back, the Tories post-Brexit are going to strip the country bare

by Anonymousreply 85October 25, 2018 10:37 PM

I loved her in "Upstairs Downstairs"...

by Anonymousreply 86October 25, 2018 10:59 PM

I loved her in Backstairs at the White House

by Anonymousreply 87October 25, 2018 11:00 PM

R83 Interesting that her co-star in that "Hedda" was Jennie Linden, who played her sister in "Women In Love". Linden was pretty and looked quite a bit like a young Debbie Reynolds.

by Anonymousreply 88October 25, 2018 11:36 PM

She's no Glenda Farrell.....

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 89October 25, 2018 11:37 PM

Farrell was a pretty big star in the 30s and probably into the 40s who later was still working in character parts in Jerry Lewis and Elivs Presley films into the 1960s. She was a good actress and usually very enjoyable, almost on the order of an Eve Arden or Thelma Rittter.

by Anonymousreply 90October 25, 2018 11:39 PM

Elvis, my bad.

by Anonymousreply 96October 26, 2018 2:35 AM

Joan Crawford calls Glenda Jackson the world's greatest actress in this 1973 recording. So she had both Joan and Bette's approval!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 97October 26, 2018 2:36 AM

I can't quite see Joan sitting through Women in Love or The Music Lovers.

by Anonymousreply 98October 26, 2018 3:08 AM

I think Joan played Charlotte Corday in the L.A. production of Marat/Sade.

by Anonymousreply 99October 26, 2018 3:10 AM

Apparently Glenda was a dinner guest at Joan's apartment and witnessed an unpleasant moment with Joan and one of her kids, I forget which.

by Anonymousreply 100October 26, 2018 3:37 AM

In 1973 there were no other talented young actresses of note working in films. Of course, Bette and Joan loved her.

by Anonymousreply 101October 26, 2018 4:10 AM

Really, r101? Ellen Burstyn, Jane Fonda, Marsha Mason, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Julie Christie, to name just a few off the top of my head.

by Anonymousreply 110October 26, 2018 10:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 111October 26, 2018 10:15 AM

Damn wish they would release the vote tallies one day for Oscars past. Rumor was only like 10 votes separated the nominees when Glenda won her Touch Of Class Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 112October 26, 2018 1:44 PM

r111, she doesn't smoke now and if you heard her voice on stage you wouldn't be so stupid to think she still does at 82. Her voice is clear and piercing as a bell. And sorry if she doesn't feel the need to be Little Miss Sunshine at this point in her life so that her interviews could amuse the likes of you more.

by Anonymousreply 113October 26, 2018 2:53 PM

So, r112? She still won.

by Anonymousreply 114October 26, 2018 2:54 PM

[quote][R111], she doesn't smoke now

Because she said so, r115.

by Anonymousreply 116October 26, 2018 4:17 PM

She told YOU?

In most of the recent articles, it says she cut down.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 117October 26, 2018 4:25 PM

She said in an interview she cut down on smoking. Her voice is undiminished. I know because I saw her in "Three Tall Women" on Broadway. And if you can do Lear in not one production but two--at 82--you're doing just fine.

by Anonymousreply 118October 26, 2018 4:28 PM

Joan and Bette would REALLY hate the current crop. Save maybe Emma Stone. Maybe.

by Anonymousreply 119October 27, 2018 1:13 AM

Oh, they would have both been mad that Stone won the Oscar for "La La Land"; they probably would haven't had a problem for her winning for "Birdman" though.

by Anonymousreply 120October 27, 2018 3:46 PM

I would argue that Glenda Jackson in the BBC miniseries Elizabeth R is the greatest screen performance of the century, at least by a woman. The way she absolutely dominated each and every scene is something I have not seen in another performer... and she didn't have good looks to do it... just sheer charisma and talent.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 121October 27, 2018 5:16 PM

Yeah, they'd probably find Emma Stone to be a twit. Who's The Strong Actress these days? Any?

by Anonymousreply 122October 27, 2018 5:35 PM

She seems to look a lot like Ian McKellen, especially in her old age.
