I just watched "The Wife" and Glenn Close was masterful!
The movie was extremely well done - no real fireworks or bombast. A neat character study with a compelling and powerful performance by Glenn. She was magnificent in her very SUBTLE acting. One of her best performances I have seen by her in many years.
Her daughter, Annie Starke clearly has a lot of talent, playing her repressed and insecure younger self. And she's gorgeous.
Lovely supporting work from the men; Jonathan Pryce, Harry Lloyd and Max Irons. Christian Slater wasn't bad either.
Very good movie which we rarely see nowadays, unfortunately.Quiet but with a lot to say. I hope Glenn finally get her due!

Is the next stage of Glenn's Oscar campaign? Starting threads on DL? Melissa Leo's fur coat tits out pics were less embarrassing.

Agree. I see some people talk about how they don't see the hype, and you can tell that is why. There is a lot of suble work, there is a lot of great acting in the small moments.
That said I thought the script was hohum and Glenn was actually miscast. One she is too old, and it is noticeable given certain story points of the film, and I do think she comes across as too strong a presence to be someone that was shy and played second fiddle.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 22, 2018 10:31 PM

R3 I see what you mean, she is a strong presence but I think that adds to the complexity of her characterisation. She played it down for so long that when it all boiled over it was hard to believe she last 32 years living her self-imposed lie.
I disagree she's too old though - the character isn't a vain one and has obviously allowed herself to grow old and diffident to her husband whom she couldn't bare to be without as a younger woman.

The character is supposed to be significantly younger than her husband r3, she is his second wife and was a student when he was a professor. I was actually caught off guard at the flashback because the two characters seem very much of age with each other.

Here’s the deal. Gaga gave a true star turn performance. The promise we saw from AHS was fully realized with Cooper at the helm. She will win and rightly so.
Glenn should be happy with the nomination.

Gaga is not winning Best Actress, R31. Not sorry 'bout it, either. Her musical numbers were fantastic but her acting was uneven and even uninspired at times, but I blame this on the underdevelopment of her character.
In the #MeToo climate we live in, I can't believe this is being touted as anything other than a clichéd and even insulting film.
The first third of it was wonderful and then it falls apart because MAN REASONZ. Ugh.
Close's film is topical and an effective study of the dissolution of a marriage and the emancipation of a woman.
Watching Close in "The Wife" is like watching a tight shot of beautiful hands embroidering or fine china breaking in slow motion. Close shows us so much through her performance and in turn lifts the film to It's highest possible heights.
Close here is like a diamond being formed through heat, pressure and the subsequent cooling, shimmering finally with the brilliance of a true star. Her expression under the spotlight while being acknowledged is both heartbreaking and embarrassing and alone worthy of the Oscar.

Oh please, Glenn didn't even sing in the movie. The most cringe worthy scene comes first (followed by many more) when Glenn makes Pryce's pinky all stinky when he finger fucks her.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 23, 2018 7:14 PM
|
R33 Because, you know, every actress needs to sing in their movies.
Also, the fingering was infinitely more inspiring than watching a "star" play second fiddle to an alcoholic, borderline abusive loser.

I saw The Wife a week ago and it's a film that's stayed with me in a way that A Star Is Born didn't.
It's a film you need to watch a second time, knowing the truth about the situation and seeing both Close and Pryce's reaction to everything that happens. So much of Close's performance is internal, even when she's sparring with Slater over a vodka there's a difference between what she's saying and what she's thinking. A masterpiece in performance.
Jonathan Pryce felt miscast, but said this weekend during an interview on the BBC that no American actors were prepared to play The Husband in a film opposite Glenn Close called The Wife.
As for A Star Is Born, the film is all about Bradley Cooper who is the best he's ever been. Excellent direction too. Gaga felt like a supporting role (does she not have a single cis-female friend????) and like Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls she comes alive when she's singing her heart out but otherwise it's very much HIYA!!! LOOK AT ME I'M DOING DRAMATIC ACTING THANK YOU!!! Not bad but not Oscar worthy.

Glenn In The Wife was superb.
But please go back and watch Kira in Colette. She was also superb in a, hmmmm, similar theme.
Then on the lesbian continuum watch The Favorite.
So many great women actors in films dominated by women.
I thought that McCarthy was also superb in her lesbian foray.

I haven't seen the wife yet, but I have seen ASIB. I am a fan of Stephanie/Gaga. I definitely think that she can sing, and I think that she's very respectable at acting, but it is a leap too far to think that that was an oscar worthy performance, it just wasn't. You might think that it's fair to take away an oscar from someone that did better, and give it to Gaga because she's Gaga, but I don't, and since she didn't win the Golden Globe tonight, I think it's not happening.

I made the mistake of watching the Judy Garland version the week before. I was amazed at how good James Mason was, and how Cooper took the heart of that performance and made it the centre of his film. Allie was a marginal figure, really.
