Want me to pick you up anything?
I'm Going To WT Grant later on

I'm done at Grants, doesn't seem to be anything there
Oh well, on to EJ Korvette, anyone want something, whilst I'm there?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 16, 2018 9:57 PM |
Yes, my grandmother, who worked there. She died when I was a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 16, 2018 10:00 PM |
Will you be joining the record club while you're there?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 17, 2018 3:40 PM |
One of my first purchases when I got my own apartment and started working was a green vinyl sofabed from Grant's.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 18, 2018 5:12 AM |
Of course, I joined the record club. Korvette's had some wonderful sales on stereo turntables.
Now I'm off to Phar-Mor to pick up my prescriptions.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 18, 2018 3:30 PM |
I need a stereo to replace my hi-fi, so I don't have to buy monaural records anymore.

If you are lunching at Woolworth's, I highly recommend the barbecue on bun!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 19, 2018 1:40 AM |
Are you near a J.J. Newberry? We have a lovely one here in Asbury Park.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 19, 2018 1:44 AM |
R9, I always top off a delicious barbecue on bun with a De Luxe Tulip Sundae. Only 25 cents!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 19, 2018 1:53 AM |
Stop at the photo booth and take some selfies!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 19, 2018 2:00 AM |
Photobooth are disgusting, look what the last people left behind.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 19, 2018 2:46 AM |
Hon, I'm out of Tangee lipstick and Blue Waltz perfume. Be a lamb and pick me up some!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 19, 2018 2:52 AM |
Will you be going to Two Guys anytime afterwards, OP? They're selling GE Toaster Ovens for 29.99, and I want one to heat up my leftovers more quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 19, 2018 3:11 AM |
Get me a jar of Dippety Do and some bobby pins, thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 19, 2018 3:29 AM |
I know they had Woolworth's and Kress, But did Manhattan have Newberry's And Grants back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 19, 2018 3:33 AM |
I remember shopping at Grants in downtown St Paul when I was a little boy. My mother and I went in there all the time. It was a fun store.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 19, 2018 3:44 AM |
Here's the whole EJ Korvette's article from r8.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 19, 2018 4:44 AM |
Oh-oh, OP. Grant's might be in danger of shutting its doors!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 19, 2018 9:18 AM |
r20
Surely not, I'd say they're every bit as solid as that old mainstay Gimbals.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 19, 2018 4:04 PM |
r15 If that store were around today, people would be vandalizing their signs to read "Two Gays."
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 19, 2018 5:10 PM |
r21 GIMBEL'S.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 19, 2018 5:10 PM |
Can you pick me up two turtles in the pet section. I just can't get 'em to live longer than a week!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 19, 2018 5:27 PM |
If you do stop by Woolworth's OP, I would love to be the first one on my block to have this set of four Beatles dolls. (Paul is my favorite, of course.)

John LENNEN?

In my hometown there was a shopping center that had a Grants and a Gimbels. The shopping center was something (for its time) but then the mall arrived and the shopping center died... along with Grants and Gimbels. the mall had four anchors - Macy's, Penneys, Korvettes and Gertz - was two stories and a 1/4 mile long; my town had the biggest and best mall (for a short time). It sounds ridiculous, but I miss that shopping center - it was human-sized and wasn't enclosed, I like going in and out of the stores into the weather.

In SoCal we also had Kress's, which was like a slightly sleazier version of Grant's. The Kress drawing card was cheap popcorn and the stores reeked of it. In my house we always referred to it (fondly, of course) as "smelly Kress's."
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 20, 2018 2:30 AM |
I think we had Grant's in NYC; anyway I would love if you would bring me back a Gay Red tube of Tangee lipstick and a half pound of those hard candies with the peanut butter center. Ah, make it a pound if it's still $.49 a pound.
Remember when Macy's and Gimbels were connected by an elevated passage across 34th Street?

Could you grab me a Golden Fried Chicken Platter and a DoubleDdip Chocolate Ice Cream Soda?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 20, 2018 4:06 AM |
Could you also grab me a canary and a couple gold fish?

I come back from dinner at Schrafft's — already distressed after being stared at because I was unescorted — to this provincialism??
Get me Valium and the phone.

Valium? Dear we are only up to Seconal

It's a form of planned obsolescence

Many of the old-line variety/5&Dime chains tried to emulate Kmart (which sprang from Kresge's) by opening larger, full-line discount stores. GC Murphy had Murphy's Mart, Woolworth had Woolco, and Grant's had Grant City.

When we spent money on things made in America.
All of those things closed.

Some good socks would be nice.

Make sure the cashier gives you your S&H Green Stamps, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 17, 2021 10:36 PM |
We had a Grant's (in Mass.) but other than Woolworth's we didn't have any of the other stores mentioned here by those obviously from the tri-state area.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 17, 2021 10:39 PM |
My parents met while working for Woolworths in Syracuse, NY. My dad switched over to Grants and was there up to their closure.

As a child, my family routinely shopped at the Southgate Plaza where they filmed much of Edward Scissorhands. The movie has it in its original form. Since then, it has been renovated, but the arch is still there.

I found everything I needed today at Grants! A couple of packs of film for my Polaroid “Swinger” camera, some flashcubes for my other camera (a Kodak Pocket Instamatic 101), some “Mr. Bubble” bubble bath, a pet parakeet, and a little green pet turtle in a round plastic dish with a plastic palm tree in the middle.
Now I’m off to Penny’s for some new Ranchcraft jeans!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 18, 2021 12:02 AM |
I’m actually going to Two Guys later so I’m good.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 18, 2021 12:15 AM |
Hon, could you stop by Rexalls's and get me some sleeping pills?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 18, 2021 12:52 AM |
Could you pick me up a bathing cap? They're opening the pool at the club next week!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 18, 2021 7:57 PM |
Tomorrow is Tuesday, so it's double Eagle Stamp day at Famous, so I'll be there at opening time to get in on the deals. I'll take the 95 bus to Southtown and be home in no time. So much easier than taking the Southampton streetcar all the way downtown.

r48 But if you rode the trolley, you might get to make out with the boy next door.

[quote] and a little green pet turtle in a round plastic dish with a plastic palm tree in the middle.
Ooooh. Now that sounds fancy.
Do they have any left?
