Generally, Presidents have been pretty careful in their communications with sitting Supreme Court Justices. Obama would never have suggested such a thing and RBG would probably have found the suggestion improper had he done so.

Plus, I think they assumed Clinton would appoint the next justices.

Not to mention the fact, that Obama was unable to get a justice appointed his entire last year.

Except for Roberts, the Supreme Court justices looked very uncomfortable. They are supposed to be impartial, not props at a Republican thanking session.
