Billy Idol
I remember hearing White Wedding for the first time, and thought Billy Idol had a great run of hit songs with Eyes Without a Face, Dancing With Myself, Catch My Fall, Rebel Yell. He also had a classic, Elvis with platinum blonde spiky hair look.
Were you a fan of Billy Idol?

Fuck he was hot! Sure even his straight-boy followers must’ve felt an odd stirring in their nether regions over him occasionally - and surprised he’s not got a bigger gay following - since he’s like the hottest twink/trade ever...
There was a really hot drawing of him in one of those old collections of gay comics years ago. Clearly the gay artist who did it was obsessed! So it was two panels - pencil sketch - and the first one was him and one of his band members both drawn looking young and adolescent - with his band made having jerked him off and splooge everywhere - called billy’s first load. The second panel was the both of them aged to as they were in the late eighties - both in stage outfits and shooting their wads together - and it was called billy’s 20,000th load. At least I think that was the number! Such hot, dirty little sketches! I haven’t thought of them for years - will hafta google and see if they’re online anywhere

[quote] Billy Idol had a great run of hit songs with Eyes Without a Face, Dancing With Myself, Catch My Fall, Rebel Yell.
Actually, of the songs you mentioned, only Eyes Without a Face would qualify as a hit. None of the others even made it into the Top 40 in the U.S. Dancing With Myself didn't even make it into the Top 100. Billy Idol's songs get played a lot today, more so than most '80s artists, and judging by that, you would think that they were all huge hits back in the 1980s. But most of them weren't. His videos were popular on MTV, but his early songs seem to get more radio airplay today than they ever did in the '80s.

I am well aware of that. And I actually linked to the Billboard chart history for Billy Idol in my post. I never said that he didn't have any Top 40 songs. I merely said that of the songs OP MENTIONED IN HIS ORIGINAL POST, only Eyes Without a Face was a hit. I didn't cherry pick certain songs. The OP did. And that's exactly the point. TODAY we consider them hit singles because they're still played all the time and they've become classic, iconic '80s songs. But at the time when they were released, they were not hit singles. It's like "Melt With You" by Modern English or "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, two other examples of songs that have become '80s classics and are played all the time on '80s radio stations even though neither song was a hit single back in the 80s.

I totally agree. The Billboard charts have always sucked and have never been a barometer of good music. Most of Billy Idol's early songs were far better than the shit that was topping the charts at the time. They were great songs -- they just weren't hit singles.

R109 OMG Billy and Debby would have made the cutest punky lil het couple ever! They are both adorable in that pic

r112 Adam Ant would have been infinitely more romantic about it than dirty boy Billy Ido.
Boy was Vanity ever the village bike back then, huh?!

R134 15 minutes of fame, a lifetime of looking like a piece of crap. Poor Billy.

I read his autobiography recently! Well...I read a few chapters. I got distracted by life and never finished it.
Lots of sex and drugs. Relentless sex and drugs. However, he is a funny articulate author. There was one story he tells about how he had just moved to NYC. No one knew who the hell he was. He was dirt broke and living on air, ambition and illicit substances.
He goes to a discotheque one night to clear his head. The DJ pops on a copy of "Dancing with Myself." People start climbing over tables and pushing him out of the way to get to the dance floor. Again, no one recognized him because he was as yet unknown in the US. It was the sign he needed to give him certainty that he was gonna make it here. I just loved that story.

I bet it just galls all you "He's so ugly now!" queens to no end to know that even today, even looking rough,he could still get millions of men and women to drop their panties in a flash. Believe that !

I don’t find him ugly — he just has a bad spray tan. I appreciate that he’s used no fillers or Botox either, he seems to be owning aging.

[quote] Which British man has aged well, I can’t think of one.
I'd dare to claim Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.

Hear hear r143. I’m tired of the constant slams on the Brits. Like our fat asses age better lololol? How fucking American.

regarding r146. Siouxsie is wearing a rather famous Vivienne Westwood shirt.

But also the remark about the U.S. singles chart is misleading because, surprisingly, he was a albums artist, his 1st going platinum in the U.S. and the next two going double platinum. His sales also indicate he was seen as a Rock artist rather than a Pop artist.
He was bloody gorgeous. My entire summer of 1984 was defined by that Eyes Without A Face video.

A British (straight) friend told me that when he saw Generation X on stage for the first time, Billy Idol with his platinum spiked hair was mesmerizing. He said was the handsomest man he had ever seen. Billy has had some work done around his eyes, no bags there.

This is just my opinion, but there's nothing wrong with rock stars aging badly, it just shows they've lived life to the full as rockstars should.

Billy Idol and Steve Stevens made great music in the 80s

I think he only got the eyes done because he couldn't see.

Dancing with Myself would be considered a single since it was reworked from the Generation X version, and added to later albums.

In his book "Take it Like a Man", Boy George wrote about Billy Idol saying he used to float around the same clubs in London at the time and he was very beautiful and everybody wanted him. If I remember correctly he said Billy was straight but would do anyone and was often with rich men. Can anyone correct me on that? I would have to pull out the book and find the info. Maybe someone else remembers better than I do.

I remember someone posted on DL some time ago about a hook-up with Billy Idol. There was something about Idol liking his feet played with and that he had the most beautiful feet the poster ever saw. Could have been the fancies of a foot fetish troll.

R172 there is nothing gay about that at all. The 80s had hair metal and glam metal. All the straight men partook in that circus.

He never did it for me visually (the constant stupid sneer turned me off), but I did love his deep rich voice on "Eyes Without a Face."

It only would have been gay if you tacked it on your already prolapsed anus. Hanging posters of rock singers is not gay.
