Charlotte Rampling in 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'?

She lobbied hard for this role - she wanted it desperately. To this day, she still counts it as the "role that got away." Originally, Fred Zinnemann was attached to direct, and Rampling was his only choice for Sarah.

It wasn't meant to be, though - Rumor has it that the author of the novel, John Fowles, was disgusted with 'The Night Porter' and Rampling's work in it, and would not hear of her being cast in the film adaptation. When Karel Reisz replaced Zinnemann at the helm, Meryl Streep replaced Rampling as the star.

Hearing of this "almost was" casting was really hard to shake for me - while I love Streep, I really don't think she was the right choice for this role, and it's my least favorite of her Oscar-nominated performances by quite a distance. She herself has admitted to being very unhappy with her performance here.

Can you imagine Rampling's emerald green eyes turning to you from the cliff - her signature stare piercing your heart? She was born for this part, don't you think?

I've always thought Rampling was ugly - I don't like her hooded harsh eyes. Though Streep is no Michelle Pfeiffer either (MP is who I would have picked but maybe she was the wrong age?)

I would absolutely love to imagine that, however in your pic her eyes seem to be a rather dull, dish-water gray.

Still don't like her R3 but she's make an ok-looking boy.

Charlotte Rampling was ugly? Now I've heard everything. She'd have been great in the role and it may have come at a time when her career took a nap and made her profile higher (it would have come between Stardust Memories and The Verdict, so not really a lull yet, but she didn't do much of note until the old lady roles of the 2000s started for her).

She's great but wasn't she considered a bit of a B actress back in the day? She had to get older to get more interesting, I think. But like the idea of her as "the French Lieutenant's Whore!"

(First time I noticed that she could act was in Woody's "Stardust Memories", still a great performance).

Thoughts of La Rampling in Swimming Pool? I thought she was superb in that. A modern classic.

Night Porter WAS very skeevy.

Streep was completely miscast. For one, the woman is supposed to be mysteriously alluring if not beautiful.

Not this:

The Night Porter (Il portiere di notte) is a 1974 Italian erotic psychological drama film. Directed and co-written by Liliana Cavani, the film stars Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling, and features Philippe Leroy and Gabriele Ferzetti. Its themes of sexual and sadomasochistic obsession have made the film controversial since its initial release, with critics being divided over the film's artistic value.

The Night Porter is widely considered to be a Nazisploitation film and a cult classic. In July 2018, it was selected to be screened in the Venice Classics section at the 75th Venice International Film Festival.
