Do you remember these old time clock radios?

Didn't the numbers flipping over make a racket all night?

What other old time things did you have?

I had one of these.

As a ten year old I possessed the acute hearing ability to notice the flipping each 60 seconds of the mechanism - doubt I could hear it now. Mine was a Sony, brother's was a Panasonic.

I had one very similar to OP’s. I schlepped it to undergrad school, grad school, and in various moves for about twenty years thereafter. At just about the time it would have become retro-trendy, I awoke one night to its shrieking. Digits wouldn’t flip. Until that point it was more dependable than most of my relationships.

I have one in the back room of my house. Still works and keeps time very well.

by Anonymousreply 7September 29, 2018 2:20 AM

Wasn't that type of clock used in Bill Murray's Groundhog Day?

[quote] Didn't the numbers flipping over make a racket all night?

I imagine clocks were the first noise machines that could help people to go to sleep.

by Anonymousreply 8September 29, 2018 2:21 AM

Not only do I remember that radio OP, I still have one. Still works like a charm.

I have a Art-Deco mantel clock made of onyx and bronze, that needs to be wound every week. I did have an old clock-radio like that, though. I also have a wall clock with a commemorative plaque celebrating my beloved Aunt Lil, which I need to get restored. I had my Dad's retirement clock restored several years ago, but gave that to my brother.

by Anonymousreply 17September 29, 2018 3:09 AM

I have a serious problem with time......I stopped counting at 307 clocks in my tiny home

by Anonymousreply 18September 29, 2018 3:11 AM

I had one and I don't remember the flipping plastic bits making much noise at all. Of course, I was a teenager and slept with my headphones on listening to music for most of that time. The best thing about the clock was that you could wake up to an alarm, the radio or both.

One morning I woke up to hear there had been a nuclear "incident" at Three Mile Island. I wouldn't eat Hershey's chocolate for years after that.

My older brother saved money from his paper route to buy a clock radio like the one on OPs picture. It was brand new on the market. I’d love to know now how much he paid for it back then. $50?

We actually sat and stared at the little numbers flipping each minute. So cool! This was before smartphones, kids.

By the time I got my first clock radio it was digital and no big deal.

by Anonymousreply 21September 29, 2018 3:27 AM

My husband had one of these in his car years ago. He was so cheap he would only buy base model of cars. It didn’t come with a clock. I bought this stick-on. Problem was, you couldn’t see it in the dark.

I had one of the first iPods. It broke within 10 minutes of me taking it for a run. No surprise, since it had a spinning hard drive. Easily got it replaced since it was on warranty, but it pretty much lost its charm after that. It was expensive! Maybe 300, 400?

I had this cool little AM transistor radio with a built in flashlight; the best part was that it was rechargeable. It had a plug built right into the back and you just flipped it down and plugged it in, no adapter, no cord. And it lasted forever. I think my parents gave it to me for Christmas when I was 8 and I took it to college and used it until it made a funny noise and a slight odor of burning electronics when I plugged it in. It was Japanese-made and sealed-case design, and I can't believe the battery lasted for nearly 15 years with constant use.

Betamax. We bet and lost.

[quote]Didn't the numbers flipping over make a racket all night?

Yes. I could never have one of those radios.

by Anonymousreply 31September 29, 2018 6:11 AM

R11 I think those are called Anniversary Clocks. My brother had a digital clock but instead of the numbers flipping, they rolled over every minute. The seconds kept rolling too, and you could hear the motor humming.

[quote]Didn't the numbers flipping over make a racket all night?

No, they were silent.

But I had one of these and little Noddy's (bottom left) head went up and down as it tick-tocked. I used to put it in the bathroom.

Any kind of wound clock puts me to sleep. Even cuckoo clocks. A grandfather clock in a resonant hallway is heaven.

Paired with rain, I'm out.
