Salt and Pepper

Do they really add much flavor to recipes, or are they just used more for color?

Salt, I believe, is only added to dishes to enhance the color. It just makes everything so much brighter!

by Anonymousreply 1September 25, 2018 1:26 AM

Salt is basically clear so it wouldn't really add color to food. Salt is a flavor enhancer, drawing out the flavors of the other ingredients, reducing perception of bitterness, and is one of the five primary tastes that the tongue can sense.

Pepper adds spiciness, and I guess dark brown specks, but color wouldn't be a primary reason to use black pepper.

R2, really? I had NO idea!

by Anonymousreply 3September 25, 2018 1:29 AM

Pink Himalayan sea salt contains over 84 minerals and trace elements, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron, so it does more than just make your food taste better.

OP do you have a brain injury?

by Anonymousreply 5September 25, 2018 1:31 AM

Good God, how ignorant of cooking can you be. Try baking most sweet pastries without adding salt, especially brownies. You'll end up with pastry that has all the taste of styrofoam. Salt is a flavor enhancer, for both sweet and savory dishes. Pepper is mainly used in savory dishes, but there are some sweet dishes that call for pepper to spice it up.

And nobody, NOBODY I TELL YOU, uses salt or pepper to enhance color.

Sorry, R2's response wasn't there when I started mine, and I had to walk away for a few minutes before I had finished. But he and I agree wholeheartedly.

by Anonymousreply 7September 25, 2018 1:33 AM

I use salt and pepper on so many of my main dishes and it enhances the taste. Pizza without salt and pepper is blah.

by Anonymousreply 8September 25, 2018 1:34 AM

Could someone also explain water to the OP?

by Anonymousreply 9September 25, 2018 1:35 AM

And guess what. I bought 6 8 oz. bottles of pink Himalayan Sea Salt today at none other than DOLLAR TREE! I got it at the Dollah, so Hollah!

by Anonymousreply 10September 25, 2018 1:37 AM

This thread is clearly a sarcastic response to the “Paprika and Turmeric” thread.

Does anyone really think that OP doesn’t understand how pepper and salt are used in cooking?

by Anonymousreply 11September 25, 2018 1:38 AM

Fresh watermelon without salt is criminal, and blah.

by Anonymousreply 12September 25, 2018 1:38 AM

OP: Whatta man!

OP adds extra water to recipes as a color enhancer.

Don’t forget about the all-important third ingredient... DJ Spinderella.

r4 And just how much of that salt would you have to ingest to get the benefit of any of those trace minerals. Typical moronic food hype. Salt is salt.

by Anonymousreply 23September 25, 2018 5:32 PM

That tongue map has been proven to be bullshit.
