Brian DePalma’s “Body Double”

I just watched this for the first time. What a glorious piece of 80s cheese! Melanie’s nudie dance theme music will stay with me for days.

Did anyone see it when it was first released?

Yes. Upon its original VCR release, I'd rushed to my local video rental store to rent it. While registering my evening rental with the retailer, the owner's frau had actually commented, "You have weird tastes in movies."

Projecting much, Hunny-bunny?

De Palma has had such a checkered career. More misses than hits.

Looks like he's back directing after a 6-yr. hiatus. "Predator" looks interesting: "Described as a horror film set in Hollywood and featuring a predatory movie mogul". Thinly-veiled Harvey Weinstein character?

I saw it when it was first released. It was good but there some disappointment because people were hoping for another Dressed to Kill.

Deborahs massive extended beats after she meets Craig Wassoon for the first time always cracked me up.

That's Chemosphere at r5, one of Lautner's houses mentioned in the Interior Design thread!

Body Double was great! A funny, noirish, horror, mystery flick.

by Anonymousreply 6September 23, 2018 10:15 PM

Craig Wasson was the type I used to crush on when I was young. Not just lust after but want as a boyfriend. Seemed nice, down to earth and accessible.

by Anonymousreply 7September 23, 2018 10:19 PM

Deborah Shelton's acting was so bad they had Helen Shaver dub her voice. (but Deborah was Miss USA and first runnerup for Miss Universe so she deserves our respect.)

Best tie-in music video for a film.

Craig Wasson’s body double is Bill Maher and I couldn’t watch the movie without wanting to slap him.

I don't think it holds up, but it was fun at the time. You could tell Melanie was going to be a big star, unfortunately this was one of her funniest roles, and she never really topped it.

by Anonymousreply 13September 23, 2018 11:40 PM

I just remember someone murdering a woman with a very phallic jackhammer. In the middle of it, the guy behind me in the theatre quipped, "Subtle."

by Anonymousreply 14September 23, 2018 11:46 PM

Lush, over-blown and tacky as fuck set to an exquisite Pino Dinaggio soundtrack. Guilty pleasure and then some.

by Anonymousreply 15September 23, 2018 11:49 PM

It was not a good first date film to bring a cute, but it turns out very sensitive, (and soon to be Born-Again Christian!) girl from the dorm.

Dating guys is so so so much easier.

by Anonymousreply 16September 23, 2018 11:51 PM

as is having sex with them

by Anonymousreply 17September 23, 2018 11:55 PM

Sexy bodies

by Anonymousreply 18September 24, 2018 12:03 AM

One of my favorite movies. DePalma never fails to give you weird, campy, suspense-filled over-the-top crazy. The music alone is reason enough to love it. The movie was released before my time and I first watched it around 2006 or so (and loved it ever since). Between The Chemosphere, Deborah, Melanie and Craig - how could you not love it? The porn tie-in was so refreshing to me (and made me question why other mainstream producers and directors never followed suit.

r11, that's too funny. I always thought they looked so much alike.

by Anonymousreply 20September 24, 2018 12:11 AM

Eat my dust, I'm old enough to have seen it in a movie theatre. I thought it was hot at the time, but in retrospect it was very very silly. Particularly when the killer kills the girl the leading man THINKS he saw doing the sexy dance in the penthouse across the way. As you can see I remember not much except that Craig Wassen was the lead - guessing there but I think I'm right! - Melanie Griffith was in it and was funny; it was great for her career, the girl from Dallas played the murder victim, and Barbara Crampton had a two second scene having sex. When the girl was killed she didn't have the presence of mind to unplug the chain saw or get further away than the cord could extend, so that sort of detracted from the pathos.

It was the kind of movie that young, innocent me thought was very sexual, very adult, and kind of scary. Was I supposed to inhabit that world? It was all over my head! I know it took place in the porn industry, but you know what I mean. The attitude towards sex was pretty racy. Now I look at it and I realize the 1980s were a time basic nerds like DePalma could express their fantasies. I was too inexperienced back then to get that.

by Anonymousreply 21September 24, 2018 12:17 AM

I found it lurid and seedy, like a cheap porn film. I'd loved "Sisters"; "Carrie"; "Dressed To Kill"; "Blowout". But like it or not, it was the beginning of a looong rocky period for De Palma.

I really don't think he's ever recovered.

by Anonymousreply 22September 24, 2018 12:20 AM

I do not do animal acts. I do not do S&M or any variations of that particular bent, no water sports either. I will not shave my pussy, no fistfucking and absolutely no cumming in my face. I get $2000 a day and I do not work without a contract.

Its the creme mercedes.

by Anonymousreply 24September 24, 2018 12:23 AM

I always though Gregg Henry was hot in this. It also through me for a loop that he was the bad guy.

God, I fucking love De Palma. Say what you will about him - and I know he's made some turkeys - but he has style, a point of view, and can tell a story.

Body Double, like Dressed to Kill before it, is a film that would never get made today. That it is lurid and sleazy is why I love it.

I wish we had more directors like De Palma today.

Melanie is perfect in this film. I love that she doesn't play Holly as some sad, damaged soul but a tough businesswoman who is clear about her boundaries. This along with Something Wild, Cherry 2000, and Working Girl is why the '80s were perfect for Griffith, because all these roles knew how to capture her quirkiness and humor.

by Anonymousreply 26September 24, 2018 1:14 AM

Oh dear

by Anonymousreply 27September 24, 2018 1:14 AM

I didn't realize that Melanie got as much notice from it as she did:

Golden Globe Award tBest Supporting Actress – Motion Picture - Nominated (Peggy Ashcroft in A Passage to India won; there were 7 nominees that year)

National Society of Film Critics Award - Best Supporting Actress - Won

New York Film Critics Circle Award - Best Supporting Actress - 2nd Place (Christine Lahti - Swing Shift - 1st Place)

What does that have to do with anything? You write like a septaugenarian, which you probably are.

You got a problem with being a septaugenarian, bitch? You got a problem?

by Anonymousreply 30September 24, 2018 2:09 AM

Greg Henry is Noah Emmerich’s body double

by Anonymousreply 31September 24, 2018 3:11 AM

I love this movie, and yes it “holds up” because it was always recognized as a trashy step down from Blow Out and Dressed To Kill—it’s never enjoyed any kind of prestige, but it hasn’t depreciated or dated. It’s as entertaining now as it ever was.

I recently bought the Indicator (UK) blu ray release of this, and it’s great. Looks gorgeous.

No idea why anyone would think it doesn’t “hold up” today, unless you were dumb enough to think it was brilliant in 1984.

by Anonymousreply 32September 24, 2018 3:22 AM

This movie is such a steaming pile, and I can't get past how much Craig Wasson looks like Bill Maher.

by Anonymousreply 33September 24, 2018 3:30 AM

Craig Wasson is hot. He’s also naked, briefly, in Ghost Story (1981).

And there’s an HBO afternoon special where he plays a molesting priest, and when I saw it as a teen back in the 90s, it turned me on tremendously and I wished he could molest me.

by Anonymousreply 34September 24, 2018 4:31 AM

Excellent movie.

by Anonymousreply 35September 24, 2018 5:27 AM

Greg Henry played the Trump like Julius Caesar in that controversial play in the park last summer.

R29 - Sorry that your bitchy, nelly, queen feathers were somehow ruffled, but we do live in 2018. News flash - 1984 was 34 years ago. So YES, for many posters on this site - it was "before our time".

Maybe, but your not one of them. You write older. Much older. When you add irrelevent info, you're lying. You frequently do it in your threads.

Speaking of De Palma, has anyone seen the documentary about him, De Palma? It’s on Amazon Prime right now. De Palma is interviewed, sitting in front of a fireplace. Why does he look like he now weighs 400 lbs? Good lord.

Body Double had a great sense of humor - even the opening credits were amusing.

But oh that driller killer . . .

I love the mall scene so much. The whole thing is a panty sniffing joke! De Palma is hysterically funny. And the whole Frankie Goes To Hollywood music video plunked down in the middle of it! This movie rules
