Arthur Mitchell, Pioneering Black Ballet Dancer, Dies At 84
He was told that Blacks could never ever be classical ballet dancers in a true sense because of its European origins and because Blacks are flat-footed and have big butts. Oh well... Mr. Mitchell proved them wrong...

Allie Morales @AllieMorales80
As a little girl in the early 80s, I read an article abt Mr. Mitchell in Highlights for Kids magazine. I kept that magazine & I read that same article to my little girl when she started ballet classes *just* a few months ago. We talked abt his talent, ambition and bravery.

He coaxed Tanny LeClercq out of her seclusion in the Apthorp to teach at DTH from her wheelchair.

He was a great artistic leader, and inspired so many dancers. I read his obituary earlier today, and was hoping that he wasn't going to be forgotten by DL. Thanks, OP.

Just like whites could never truly be apart of hip-hop culture. They don't know what real struggle is. Which is actually the origin of hip-hop. Specifically black and puerto rican struggle.

R7 yet again illustrates the bigotry and racism entrenched in the Black community.

R10 You might want to look at the behavior of whites in America going back centuries.
There's a reason why racism is synonymous with white people. If you really want to talk about racism being entrenched in ones community.
White America owns that one. Historically at that.

R7, r13, don't waste your time. Some people can't be educated. Some are too weak to be educated. I thank you for trying.

Nice article by Allegra Kent about dancing Agon in Moscow with Arthur in 1962 at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In today's NY TIMES.
