I've loved him since Mr. Show, although I've never even considered him attractive. He's got a nebbish quality that doesn't translate to sexy for me. But ever since he's been doing Better Call Saul, I've suddenly noticed he can be quite arrogant in interviews. I feel like he's gotten a bit full of himself. I'm not even watching the fourth season until its finished and I can binge it. Cannot handle the week-to-week where nothing much happens. I feel like the show will lose something without McKean in the cast.

It's also great to see Odenkirk trading Evans riffs with McKean. I forgot they've known each other a while. They were so good together on Better Call Saul. I'm going to miss McKean as Chuck McGill. I'm still super angry about his snub last year for a Supporting Nom; he should have taken that Emmy home. Haven't even started the new season yet. I don't know, I realize a lot of the audience just loathed Chuck, but I felt bad for him and I understood him, being the oldest sibling and having to deal with a lot of clean-up bullshit from my younger sister. When he's by his mother's bedside right before she dies and she calls out Jimmy's name- ugh, that felt devastating. It's really Jimmy I can't stand. So sick of his whiny bullshit and the faster he becomes Saul the better. You just know he's going to ruin Kim, who will take the brunt of his fuck-ups. To me, she's the Jesse Pinkman of the show (instead of Nacho) because its her loyalty that will ultimately screw her over.

So I have known Bob as an acquaintance, for about a decade, as we have mutual friends. I have had a few long talks with him over the years. I don't live in LA or we'd probably be better friends. But I know a few things.

One is that he's very self-deprecating. Like sort of acts like all of his success is a fluke, a stroke of luck. He's not arrogant is what I'm saying.

Two, he grew up in Chicago in a large family of Irish Catholics. His dad was an unpleasant alcoholic and not a beloved figure in Bob's life story. I think the experiences of growing up in a hypocritical religious household with a jerk father, gave Bob his edgy slant. That and doing acid in college. The absurdism that he gravitated to in his stand up and early sketch work, seems to stem from a sense of raging at the hypocrisy of old school authority figures. That's my theory, anyway.

His brother Bill was a writer and producer on the Simpsons for years. I've met Bill, too, and he's even more cynical and bitter. Or he was when I met him ten years ago. Just seemed world-weary.

Bob loves his kids and is devoted, enthusiastic dad (if not sometimes befuddled by the mammoth task of parenting kids so that they turn out normal and not bitter and fucked up). He has two kids and they are the same ages as two of my kids, so that has been a source of camaraderie over the years.

I remember when he got the job of Saul on Breaking Bad, he had mixed emotions about it because he had to be away from his kids two weeks out of every month. He'd never had a job commitment like that before. He didn't seem super-thrilled about that part of it, though I sensed the steady paycheck was a happy thing. Who know it would turn into the role of a life time with his own series based on Saul?! With giant larger-than-life sized posters of Bob as Saul at the pay phone in the desert, wallpapering LA? Crazy.
