r183 Is a photo of Dr. Frances Horwitch, Miss Frances to us kiddies. Famous for being the host of "Ding Dong School," a widely watched TV program in the 1950's. Seen here using finger paints, a lovely messy thing we used to enjoy in kindergarten, and for the lucky few. at home. Just saw them yesterday at A.C.Moore(it's nice to know they are still being made and used)

r256 Old-fashioned heat register. The heat generated by the furnace located in the cellar would rise through those grates and eventually heat the room it was located in, and perhaps make it up to a second floor.

by Anonymousreply 264September 19, 2018 6:21 AM

Floor furnace vent. In the winter I used to pull a blanket over me and sleep on top of one which pissed off my father because the heat didn't get out and circulate, so the furnace worked harder, which ran up the power bill.

by Anonymousreply 265September 19, 2018 6:23 AM

R262, yes and that particular one was at NASA.

by Anonymousreply 266September 19, 2018 6:23 AM

Yes. R260,It was the only source of heat in my grandparents house and it was in the dining room. The upstairs had 3 bedrooms and only a grate in the floor so the heat would rise from the dining room to the second floor. It didn’t work well, as my mother said she often awoke in her bedroom with icicles inside her window.

r270 A hand-operated bottle capper, for the people who used to brew beer or other carbonated beverages at home. The man who own Crown Cork & Seal made a mint making the bottle caps, since they could only be used once and more had to be purchased. He gave King Gillette the idea, who used it to HIS advantage when he invented the disposable, two-edged razor blade.

r278 I remember having a View-Master as a kid, there here seemingly hundreds of disks to buy. There was even one relating the sortie of "Little Black Sambo"(it was a simpler time)

r280 Klik-Klaks. You jiggled the balls until they began striking one another, and making the distinctive sound that was its name. A dangerous toy, you could really do some damage to things and people in your orbit.

r286 Silly Putty. I believe it was originally supposed to be a wallpaper cleaner? You can find knockoff versions at a dollar store.

r272 All the "Romper Room" teachers I ever saw were cute young women. I suppose one could be generous and say of Miss Frances that she was "striking"?

[quote]Gurl, NO! I never even saw them until the 70s. In the 60s we just had record players.

I don't want to argue, but as a kid growing up in Brooklyn, my dad was very excited when he bought a Zenith console system from a neighborhood mom & pop store where he bought all his appliances. The owner gave him a great deal because it was a floor model.

Here's the exact one, they still own! It's used for display, my mom keeps he plants on it. My dad moved on to separate components around 1971-72. I remember some of the first ones he had, Sansui, a Technics turntable and speakers from the Great Britain. He was really into music, he always tried to buy the best within his budget.

My grandfather dipped snuff so he needed a spittoon. But my grandmother would not have such a white trash thing in her home, so it was a cuspidor. Once when very young, barely more than a toddler, I accidentally stepped right in it, and trying to get my foot out, tipped it over. A very nasty scene in many ways and on many levels ensued.

R389 In general, a CONSOLE stereo system was one where the player and all the bells and whistles were inside a console - a permanent part of it, not just sitting on a shelf as we would with a shelf or credenza today.

Some companies may have billed other things as a console as a selling tool, but what you posted, we generally refer to as just the turntable.

by Anonymousreply 409September 19, 2018 12:42 PM

These were old TV consoles. Same idea as stereo - the item itself (TV) was part of the larger piece of furniture (console).

Isn't R333 a record player? You'd put a 45 LP in in and close the lid to play it. The sound came out of the tinny speaker holes on the top.

by Anonymousreply 447September 19, 2018 4:46 PM

Helpful hint on record players (a slight tangent):

If you decide to consider collecting vinyl again, etc. - those old individual component pieces in thrift shops and the speakers are often as good now as they were then. You just have to make sure you have a needle/cartridge.

Older console stereos can be lovely, too, although they are harder to repair if there's an issue.

Whatever you do, don't buy the current brand named Crosley. It's basically a Fisher Price record player, it's not made well, and most records skip on them (even new ones). They make a lot of "all in one" units but they are just very cheaply made and end up being total shit.

If you are going to buy a new turntable, shop around and look at a reputable shop/dealer. We found ours for about $200 and used existing speakers.

[quote] I tried in vain to find a pic of the lovely one that was in Jardins du Lux even in the 90's when I walked across the jardin everyday.

I once went in there and someone had left a turd in the pissoir. NEVER AGAIN.

Vanden Plas had been around since the days of coach and horses I believe.

The Vanden Plas Princess was a luxury version of a very popular British car called the Austin 1100.

They were like miniature Rolls Royces - with leather seats and walnut dashboards. They even had little sandwich tables in the back.
