Floor furnace vent. In the winter I used to pull a blanket over me and sleep on top of one which pissed off my father because the heat didn't get out and circulate, so the furnace worked harder, which ran up the power bill.

Speaking of home heaters, in my childhood home we had a huge gas stove with a side heating vent (not exactly the one in this photo, but close). It was the only source of heat in the house, which was luckily small. I'm not even that old, a late Gen Xer, we were just poor. In winter after taking a bath I would sit next to the stove with my towel hung around me like a tent.

The man who own Crown Cork & Seal made a mint making the bottle caps, since they could only be used once and more had to be purchased. r280 Klik-Klaks. You jiggled the balls until they began striking one another, and making the distinctive sound that was its name. A dangerous toy, you could really do some damage to things and people in your orbit.

I don't want to argue, but as a kid growing up in Brooklyn, my dad was very excited when he bought a Zenith console system from a neighborhood mom & pop store where he bought all his appliances. The owner gave him a great deal because it was a floor model.

R389 In general, a CONSOLE stereo system was one where the player and all the bells and whistles were inside a console - a permanent part of it, not just sitting on a shelf as we would with a shelf or credenza today.

by Anonymous | reply 447 | September 19, 2018 5:46 PM |
Helpful hint on record players (a slight tangent):
If you decide to consider collecting vinyl again, etc. - those old individual component pieces in thrift shops and the speakers are often as good now as they were then. You just have to make sure you have a needle/cartridge.
Older console stereos can be lovely, too, although they are harder to repair if there's an issue.
Whatever you do, don't buy the current brand named Crosley. It's basically a Fisher Price record player, it's not made well, and most records skip on them (even new ones). They make a lot of "all in one" units but they are just very cheaply made and end up being total shit.
If you are going to buy a new turntable, shop around and look at a reputable shop/dealer. We found ours for about $200 and used existing speakers.
