My Finest Hour
I was walking home briskly from work on a crowded city sidewalk, and this Born Again zealot fell into step with me. I declined the literature, saying I didn't believe in gods.
He got wide eyed and said, "Oh, no! If you lie in bed tonight and ask Jesus to come to you, something [italic]wonderful[/italic] will happen!"
I yelled, "Like what?? He'll let me suck HIS COCK???"

You trollop! Are you a female?

Well that's hardly the kind of thing a gentleman would say. One oughtn't revel at lower-class behavior.

I love it OP! I would have laughed my ass off if I'd heard that.

[quote]r1 You trollop! Are you a female?
No. I wonder if that would have caused even more of a stir, though.
I was having NONE of it!

I think it is worse behavior to fall into step with strangers who have declined your literature, and keep the spiel going.

He went home with you, didn’t he? Well?

That would be so funny. ("And how did YOU TWO meet...??")

Don't listen to the geezer gays on here, OP. You did the right thing.

[quote]r8 This. Never. Happened.
It did! It was at the west side of Fairfax Ave., between Santa Monica and Romaine.
It is burned in my memory forever. I think the street preacher's big mistake was approaching people who were dragging themselves home from work at 6:00 pm. We're traditionally NOT at our most receptive, then, and just want a bubble bath. Not [italic]Jesus Saves[/italic] brochures.

Aghastion needs to become a word.

R5 what the other person did is irrelevant. A gentleman doesn't justify trashy, low-class behavior by the trashy behavior of others. He acts to a higher standard.

The street preacher had begun a public dialogue.
A slipery slope...

I believe you OP, I just wish I was there to witness it. I never see anything cool, and think of witty comebacks a day too late.

^^ You also have to imagine this guy sticking with me as he chattered away....I didn't break my stride the whole time. I wanted him to go AWAY!
He was left in the middle of the block, dumbstruck. His mouth was actually agape.

I had a proselytizer follow me around a grocery store once. I'm not kidding. She wouldn't stop. Followed me straight to the check out lane too and then started to talking to the cashier in this whiney victim voice that she was "only trying to talk to me about Jesus." The cashier was smiling at her while she was whining away. Unbelievable.

I think public proselytizers are a bit off, anyway.
They really are opening up a can of worms.

The correct response is an irritated, non-verbal sneer.

The difference is, you could keep walking. We have Screaming Jesus Guy on the subway (where you're trapped) who's a phobe. Among his rants:
1 - Women should not wear pants as it is an affront to god and man because they are trying to be men and should remember their place as women and dress in long dresses only.
2 - A rant about race mixing and homosexuality being punishable by death.
3 - this was the topper - God sent the God Fearing Europeans to eradicate the American Indian because they were too proud and haughty of a people and the Bible says that only the meek shall inherit the earth and the proud shall perish... He'll be a big hit this year at the Indigenous Peoples Day in Somerville.
Whereas Quiet Jesus Lady just stands there quietly in Forest Hills Station with her sign warning of the perils of not repenting.
And as others have noted, if you ride the MBTA you already know what hell is like.

I don't know why some of you are berating OP for not being gentlemanly. He never claimed to be a gentleman in the first place.

I sadly [italic]wasn't[/italic] in DOWNTON ABBEY gentleman mode.
Just another poor working goil, trying to trundle home after a long day at the office, praying to make it unmolested by unbalanced religious fanatics.

A gentleman is in "gentleman mode" when he is awake.
It is sad to think that anyone would consider his finest hour to be shrieking vulgar remarks at street people. That sets the bar rather low.

I wouldn't call street preachers "street people"...which implies homelessness.
