I just discovered Reese Witherspoon has a nation-wide book club, where she chooses the frauiest books EVER for other women to read.
Aw. I thought this would be about peanut butter cups.

She’s about to have her own bestseller, Whiskey in a Teacup

She's apparently very intelligent, and was accepted into Stanford, and went for a little while, intending to major in English. It's awful now se has such crap taste in books. But I'm sure she gets some sort of cut from the titles she chooses.
I don;t get why all these movie stars like her and Gwyneth want to be Oprah. Isn't it enough, being a movie star? Apparently it's not: what they really want to do is to tel middle-class white women what to buy and what to think. they want to be brand names rather than just movie stars. It's really pathetic.

Yeah, she’s obviously trying to rebrand as she’s getting older. I’m sure having a husband that works for that sketchy CAA agency will help her land a talk show deal or whatever.
She does look good though, I admit. Any work she gets is subtle and well done.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 14, 2018 7:02 AM |
Yeah i mean she's a frau, so her choices are frauish.

I commend them for reinventing themselves as they age out of acting. At least they aren't making fools of themselves desperately trying to hang on and remain relevant in careers that demand youth.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 14, 2018 9:49 AM |
I'm not a huge fan of what GOOP's up to, but I respect Reese. Not only did she take her career into her own hands, but she's managed to generate roles for other women of a certain age.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 14, 2018 10:08 AM |
Fraus are a great and loyal demographic. You show them something and they immediately want to have it in order to make their lives complete for, like, ten seconds. I doubt without them the New Age movement around THE SECRET would be on anyone's radar.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 14, 2018 10:20 AM |
She’s the quintessential Southern Belle. Blonde, savvy, snobby and chatty.
I bet she also has a big liquor cabinet at home.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 14, 2018 10:48 AM |
This is all part of her rebranding as the poster said upthread... An antidote to her drunken soliloquy with that cop. CAA does this crap ... a clothing line, a book that establishes you as a thought leader in something stupid that will appeal to dumb women, a website, and a staff beyond your typical agent and publicist. CAA is doing the same thing with Hilaria Baldwin but they have less to work with with her.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 14, 2018 11:08 AM |
She would have had to expand her brand anyway. Even in today's world there are not that many roles for women her age no matter if they had bad press in the past or not.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 14, 2018 11:16 AM |
Does she really read these books? Does she write her own social media and book club posts?

Hygge and other mug cradling lifestyles offer a variety of products in order to take advantage of women and guys who believe that in order to feel calm harmony you need lots and lots of overpriced stuff to create that serenity (which, in reality, should come from within and not because your room is filled with GOOP products).

by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 14, 2018 7:00 PM |
I agree that I don't get the impulse to brand yourself as Gwyneth and Reese have done--it requires a level of pure egotism I just don't understand. For some reason it seems much more natural for me from talk show hosts like Oprah and Rosie to do it, since what they're already selling on their shows is a kind of atmosphere and lifestyle--but actors are not really selling that through their acting work, nor really should they be, to my mind. I would respect Reese and Gwyneth more if they had first segued to become talk show hosts before they started selling crap.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 14, 2018 7:14 PM |
r31 Difficult to be a movie star once you get old, of course much harder for women, better to do stuff like that, leading men and women often have a hard time when they get old, and TV is more for actors than movies, also more people who learned their craft there; don't think Reese and Gwyneth ever were so much into acting, more into being celebrities and parties and being talk about town.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 14, 2018 7:19 PM |
R4, that is a brilliant marketing strategy, if your "book club" is of any size.
I don't like her, but I do admire her career smarts. At an age when most actresses have trouble getting any work at all, especially if they have a drunken image-destroying scandal on their record, she's establishing herself as a producer and is solidifying her fan base into a market demographic. She'll probably end up as a studio head, or owning her own TV channel.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 14, 2018 9:13 PM |
R10, I work for one of the publishers whose books she selected for her book club. We were surprised when she picked it and she made it a national bestseller. She may get a cut now, but she didn’t with our book.

Reese told that Where The Crawdads Sing is one of the best books she’s read recently 📚
In Owens’s evocative debut, Kya Clark is a young woman growing up practically on her own in the wild marshes outside Barkley Cove, a small coastal community in North Carolina. In 1969, local lothario Chase Andrews is found dead, and Kya, now 23 and known as the “Marsh Girl,” is suspected of his murder. As the local sheriff and his deputy gather evidence against her, the narrative flashes back to 1952 to tell Kya’s story ...

December book pick
“Get ready to be swept up in a whirlwind romance. It absolutely charmed me.” —Reese Witherspoon
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 10, 2018 7:08 PM |
A love story about what happens after you meet, or rather, don't meet the one.
Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away.
Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.
What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

She panders to the mug cradling frau community who only has a few minutes in her busy life for herself and live on a rather limited budget (and the most luxury they can dream of is a nice bubble bath with a few tea light candles burning hoping that the world is not going to end or the kids, or husband, bang at the bathroom door for the next 15 minutes).

Our January book pick (and the first one this year!) is #TheLibraryBook by @susanorlean. It's a nonfiction story about the fire that destroyed the Los Angeles Public Library in 1986, and the mystery that surrounds the crime. You'll meet an eclectic cast of characters: a feminist librarian who refused to surrender her position to a man, a “Human Encyclopedia," and of course, the arsonist... or is he? Woven through these tales is a long love letter to libraries, which will make you remember why you love reading in the first place. It's the perfect way to kick off this year—we can't wait to have you read along with us and @reesewitherspoon!

Sometimes Witherspoon anoints authors — Curtis Sittenfeld, Celeste Ng — who would have succeeded without her help. But she often chooses more obscure writers. Balli Kaur Jaswal, whose novel “Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows” was Witherspoon’s March 2018 pick, recently told Forbes that over a year later, she’s still feeling the effects: “Two young women came up to me after a reading and said, ‘How did it feel to have Elle Woods reading your book?’ I laughed because I hadn’t really thought of it that way but I like to think the main character of ‘Legally Blonde’ would enjoy ‘Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows.’”

This actually makes sense for her. And for the last 15 years she’s been reading advance copies of every major female lead book. Or at least reading coverage of them. So she might as well make some money off it. Also it helps keep her at the center of that world. As a producer if she book to a studio, She’s almost guaranteed to have first right of refusal on that same authors next book. Not even contractually it’s just a courtesy.
